Part of it is because it's not tied down with DC's existing magic stuff, so the separation between "spoopy shit" and "mythology shit" feels more natural so far.

Part is because they've done the work of weaving magic into her backstory. It follows so naturally from the "what if Diana was raised by Circe" conceit I can't believe I never thought of it before, it just werks.

And then part is because JLD never had a Hellboy. In this, Diana is like if Liz had Hellboy's powers and that's awesome.

This is why cape comics staying mired in an incestuous shared universe always exhausts me. This run of Absolute Wonder Woman? Actually really good. I'd love to read more of it, its interesting and I want to see where it goes.
But its not *wonder woman*. Not that I am saying I would rather have more generic Diana adventurers instead of this, but by associating this cool and original story with that old IP and carrying over the characters, this GOOD story will always remain in the shadow of the "main" version of the character that it is a spinoff of.
I would much rather that Absolute Wonder Woman was called absolutely anything else, with a new character name entirely, that was allowed to stand on its own two feet instead of it being destined to forever be this blatant cashgrab filler sidestory to try to revitalize an old character by association. Remember when comics did that? Made new heroes that were not just corporate brand extension?

As an Elseworlds? Yeah, sure I would, and I have. It's a pretty standard role-reversal and I think such stories often tell us a lot more about the character, like in Red Son. Or in other books that recontextualize the characters like Secret Identity.

Like here, you have Diana raised by a villain, but instead of just turning evil, her presence actually makes Circe good, and changes how Diana views the world without fundamentally changing who she is.

Yeah this is what made me avoid reading this for so long even as other WW fans told me it's not what it looks like and it's not another Azz run.

Because while that ended up being true, the majority of readers (and writers) are drooling simpletons who take away all the wrong ideas, and think what makes this good is that Diana has a sword and rides Pegasus and does magic, when what actually makes it good is how those things contrast with the canon version, and the writing itself.

We've seen what happens when you give Diana a sword and Pegasus in canon already, and it's boring as shit, and made by hack fraud writers.

It's like if people looked at Absolute Batman where he's a brutal douchebag, and instead of thinking about how this relates to the core of the character, what aspects you can change before it stops being Batman, they go "hell yeah dude if they made canon Batman like this I'd actually read the comic!! (lie)"
