How did South Park lose its cultural relevance? Was it literally just because of shitting on Trump?
>>
>>155229346
Show hasn't been good in nearly 15 years
Should have ended with You're Getting Old and just stuck to video games/movies after that
>>
>>155229346
No, it was internet culture. It was around 2017 when people stopped giving a fuck, because shitposting did what South Park does better than South Park and at an infinitely higher volume.
>>
>>155229346
I wouldn't say it's completely lost, but news now comes and goes way faster than just a week so it's hard for them to keep up with current events
>>
>>155229423
That's a good observation. Reminds me of how 1984 touted as "eye-opening", and I suppose at some point it was for the sheltered people out there, but these days everyone knows the core concepts and messages it set out to deliver from social media talking about IRL politics. South Park is a similar story, it was all about being irreverent and making fun of everything, but then the internet became available in every third world shithole and people all over the world casually adopted that mentality, making SP no longer special compared to a million ironic memes on any given contemporary subject matter that are more in-touch and sometimes funnier.
>>
It lost its edge. They don't call anyone gay or retards anymore, their "both sides thing" is just one side getting hit with baby gloves and them wasting entire seasons on the other, and there's just too many current event episodes.
>>
>>155229346
>cultural relevance
Why you talk like a fucking bot?
>>
>>155229346
By Heidi abusing Cartman and being a notorious antisemite, the true evil in their relationship with her ability to follow through and double down.
>>
>>155229346
Pretty much. They exposed themselves.
>>
>>155230351
Literally this
>>
For starters, its sporadic release schedule means it’s always behind the trends now. One of the main gimmicks of this show was how close to a trend it could have an episode. Now it’s making episodes about 6 7 a year after kids stopped saying that.

It rounded off a lot of its edges. With how sanitized it’s gotten, I’m surprised CC even airs its older episodes

Lastly, the core demographic for this show has always been at the oldest, middle school kids. Way too many episodes revolve around politics now, which kids don’t care about.
>>
>>155230625
Kids care about politics, they just get groomed and indoctrinated by trannies on Discord into unquestioningly being radical left that gets offended at everything.
>>
>>155229346
The news cycle moves too fast for it now. Back in the day, a trend or significant event would linger around for months. These days, trends die in a week, and noteworthy shit happens every day. There are things in the news cycle in 2026 that would have been talked about for YEARS a decade ago, that are now forgotten in a week.
>>
>>155230635
>kids care about politics.
No they don’t. They care about the absolute surface level parts that adults around them do. If a discord tranny says “blumpf bad” then drops a dissertation on why, kids are only gonna hang on that first part

>guy sings about how he ate his song for a blue ray player.
Fine, I won't watch it anymore. Sheesh, that's rude.
>>
>>155229346
Simple, normies discovered the internet. When South Park was at its peak relevance, there was still a debate on whether it was “meme” or “me-me” because that word was never spoken aloud. Many things of that era comparable to memes came from South Park, I still remember how often the gay fish joke was repeated when I was in high school, every person saying it with absolute confidence they were the first. Now people get their trends on twitter, including South Park itself
>>
>>155229346
They forgot their own words
>Half the kids in the class didn't vote for your nephew, so what about them? You don't give a crap about them because they're not on your side! People like you preach tolerance and open-mindedness all the time, but when it comes to Middle America, you think we're all evil and stupid country yokels who need your political enlightenment! Well, just because you're on TV doesn't mean you know crap about the government! Now get your ass back on first class and respect this class's right to make up their own minds!
>>
In its prime, South Park was by far the edgiest thing a kid could get their hands on. Even if you ignore Matt and Trey turning into woke, liberal retards, there is way edgier content that is easily accessible that the teenage demographic gravitates towards now.
>>
>>155229346
I wish i knew, maybe they too much politics and in reality i personally prefer dumb shenanigans with the political theme told indirectly like the turd and douche. The other thing is also my opinion, the world has gotten more absurd every year and i think it's a hard thing to make parody when everything is so shitty.
>>
>>155231511
Too much Trump, man
>>
>>155230990
Basically this
>>
>>155229346
they used to cut through the bullshit of the mainstream narratives
now they just watch the news and repeat what it says without questioning any of it
>>155230635
that, and also other kids are indoctrinated into a manufactured 'alt right' by those very same people, because that does their work for them.
>>
>>155232819
Legit just this
>>
>>155230351
"both sides thing" is retarded when one side is demonstrably worse than the other in every way
>>
>>155233512
South Park doesn't "both sides" anymore
>>
>>155229346
People realized being counterculture becomes ironic after a while and it's better to ignore the illogical corners of culture than acknowledge/perpetuate it and that being shocking doesn't equal strength. Same happened to Stewie who evolved from impractical schemes to not caring.
>>
>>155230261
I remember some guy on Toonzone (maybe the Brainatra weirdo?) was aggressively anti-South Park and claimed its fans must think it edgy and subversive but that they were all being led by their noses like prize bulls to the slaughter. He must feel vindicated by now.
>>
>>155229346
zoomers don't watch anything scripted or anything over 2 minutes. They don't stream anything either. They just watch weird slop on tiktok and youtube shorts.
>>
>>155235075
Thats gen alpha
>>
>>155229346
Nothing is culturally relevant anymore since we have access to everything now
>>
>>155235378
Can't tell the difference
>>
>>155230261
1984 might not even be a good comparison because it’s at least a good story with universal themes that can help people identify aspects of totalitarianism in their lives. South Park is/was known as the “current events” show, one that was entirely self-inflicted and stopped being relevant in tandem with 24-hour
cable news channels.
>>155233512
It’s more “brazenly worse” rather than “demonstrably”.
>>
>>155235743
Gen-Zers are the pseuds who behave like mini politicians with their commie opinions masked as liberal opinions.
Gen-alphas are the ones who genuinely don't give a fuck about anything and screech like animals at a zoo being thrown peanuts at.
And millennials are the ones who deliver 33% of what gen-X delivered while stealing gen-Z's girlfriends cause at least millennials' 33% left of testosterone is like 3333% more testosterone compared to what gen-Z will ever have... all while still being approachable to gen-Z retarded sensibilities and lack of maturity ... before they get dumped and are forced to date gen-Z again cause not even millennials can stand a woman that's 10 years younger than them.

Very informative
>>
It was relevant only in its first 10 years, and actually at its peak in the very early years.

When it first came out, it was an instant hit and got very popular because it was very original and shocking at the time. Its biggest ratings are actually from the first season. Everyone was talking about it, it was constantly referenced in talk shows, you'd see drawings of it in WWF matches, etc. It was the edgiest thing for kids to watch. It was the first "adult cartoon" to be popular after the Simpsons years earlier. It was offensive and tackled touchy subjects in a crude and vulgar way. It quickly lost relevance afterwards, around 2000, after the movie. Other vulgar cartoons became popular (Family Guy, Adult Swim in general), and the internet happened. Things online could be way more edgy and vulgar than anything on cable TV. The internet in the early 2000s was way more offensive and vulgar than it is today. South Park then became just one of many vulgar comedy entertainment. What distinguished it for a while was the fact that it produced good funny episodes that touched on very recent topical events, and its satire was somewhat interesting in its time. But even that was eventually surpassed by online content. In its early years, South Park was watched by many people from different backgrounds. I'd say the last time it was sorta relevant was around season 10: the WoW episode got a lot of traction with the internet and gamers, and the Cartoon Wars got popular for satirizing Family Guy but also Muhammad, which got it in the news. Then, it gradually got less popular (the quality also kept dropping). It ended up being just another comedy show for 18-24 yo male demographic of stoners and gamers. It became very niche so only retards like myself kept watching because they were fans. But ask any random person and the reaction is usually "omg, this show is still going on?" Last year's Trump memes gave it a bit of relevance again but it was mostly fake and pushed by boomer media
>>
>>155229346
They take forever to do episodes now. Trey and Matt were rapid fire in the 90s, 2000s, and most of the 2010s and still managed to balance other projects. Also we haven't gotten a Goth Kids episode in forever and it pisses me off
>>
>>155229346
south park just ran out of things to talk about. a lot of the bullshit people deal with today, we were dealing with 20 years ago and there's only so many times you can do a squeaky sadam hussein voice before it stops being funny.

i actually think that south park started doing very well once it stopped focusing on the four boys and had more season-long arcs. i liked the troll trace one for example. unfortunately, the new season with trump has no B plot and in the end they epsteined the antichrist and went back to square 1 instead of moving on to the next arc.

>>155230261
such is the case with all great 20th century literature. i read both "1984" and thoreau's "walden" in college and you can basically boil down the entire book into "government bad" or "nature good"

it was important literature for the time when communication and education were more top-down and you didn't learn anything that wasn't in a book, on radio, or from the word of your neighbors, but nowadays i think most people gravitate towards characters rather than themes and settings. they don't want an entire franchise that can be boiled down to one core idea, it just doesn't feel "alive".

capeshit and scifi are both extremely popular character-based genres that cover a lot of the same aesops without much of the simplicity. or, even if it is simple, you can go read a micro-series about a character you really like and develop an emotional connection to their plight. also, cool lasers and shit definitely help sell it.

>>155229423
2017 is about a year into trump's first term and the novelty of a meme president had already worn off. there wasn't anything south park could parody that couldn't possibly come out of the president's twitter account.

>Last year's Trump memes gave it a bit of relevance again but it was mostly fake and pushed by boomer media
I think it's stopped by now but a few years back I saw an odd phenomenon on xitter where anti-woke accounts would post clips from the 2016 PC Principal episodes and generic MAGAs and the like acted as if those were new and fresh
>>
>>155238716
I remember those. Pretty stupid
>>
>>155229346
Shitting on trump while having nothing interesting to say. Do they think they were clever going after the low hanging fruit after ignoring all the shitty presidents that came before him? It's a little late for the overt political posturing when you already have 25 seasons behind you.
>>
>>155238634
No hes right. The Randy Marsh show is fucking ass
>>
>>155233512
That leads to stuff the left do getting ignored. And there are people on the left who will take advantage of that.
>>
>>155239641
You mean the Trump show?
>>
>>155229346
It was never relevant to culture
It just sometimes parodied shit thatr the faggots think was 'an attack' against whatever the disliked

Ultimately outside of teens and young adults getting stoned in college, nobody really watched it
The only 'big' thing it did was the movie solely for the 'wow it's uncensored they say fuck' now
>>
>>155229346
Shitting on Trump is culturally relevant, he's the president of the United States.

>How did South Park lose its cultural relevance?
The actual, real answer to this question is the one nobody wants to hear because it's really simple and it's also true for a shitload of other shows and franchises as well - it's just too old. It's stale and meaningless because it's old. Same goes for everything from capeshit to Simpsons and beyond. The limit where South Park and all those other franchises could tell a story or hold any meaning has long past. Effectively all American media is just legacy franchises with no more life in them.

>>
>South Park
>cultural relevance
When was it ever culturally relevant? At the very beginning, it was deeply embedded in the zeitgeist, but after the shock of Kenny deaths wore off, nobody gave a halfpenny fingerfuck about South Park anymore. So that's when it lost relevance. Very few people actually watch it. Let's compare: the April Fool's prank episode Not Without My Anus is the most watched episode in SP history at 6.3 million TVs tuned in. By contrast, Bart gets an F had over 33 million televisions set to Fox watching it that night.
Even Family Guy beats it, the premiere getting 22 million viewers, the revival premiere getting 11.85 viewers and Fast Times at Buddy Cianci Jr. High at 9.9mil.
South Park is utterly irrelevant today. Even their Trump bashing season only got 5.9mil at their most watched episode.
Clearly, nobody really gives a shit.
>>155229380
It hasn't been good since season two or three.

>>155240890
TNTjax, you are comparing network television ratings to cable ratings from a time you don't seem to be from. South Park and Simpsons also had much different audiences from each other. I was allowed to watch the Simpsons when it came out, but my parents did not approve of South Park. This was true of most households from what i experienced. Don't be so fucking retarded, TNTjax.

South Park being an offensive and edgy cartoon in the past are what helped it become relevant in the first place. They used to piss off scientologists and people like Tom Cruise. Remember how they made fun of Muslims in the Cartoon Wars episode? Remember Randy’s wheel of fortune incident? They’ve refrained from doing anything edgy and daring like that for a long time and then the show gradually declined in relevance.

I can only remember kristi noem running with it and some no name rageslop merchants reporting on it
