Obstetricians are specialists and usually only necessary in high-risk deliveries or when complications occur. In fact, when this comic was published family doctors and GPs were far more likely to oversee deliveries than OB/GYNs as specialization wasn't as common as it was today. The real issue is that Reed isn't a doctor.
