Scott generally hasn't had his philosophy in the limelight outside of the comics, so the mainstream representation of Cyclops is just a cocky douche leader who has pretty lame powers compared to other x-men/capeshits.Hopefully the movies won't fuck him up again but honestly MCU is dogshit so he will probably end up gay or something.

He is normal badas with the wife (gf) but also has basic flaws some people give shit him for. Depending on the writer he was getting various pros and cons of that average guy. Some like Claremont wanted to give him family drama in shape of a third wheel (Logan). Some like Morrison wanted to 'divorce' him and build a new relationships with another woman. Some like Whedon wanted him to be extra badass. Some like Hickman seems to be into cuckoldry so he invented shared rooms in Krakoa. And so on.Some readers naturally hate lame things some writers added to Cyclops, some naturally love badass things other writers added.

I like Boy Scout Cyclops, I liked the stories that dealt with his youth and his strive to always be a hero despite the rough circumstances a mutant has to face and how prejudice was his main enemy no matter how many times they save the world. I don’t like Magneto Cyclops, it’s just boring and feels like a betrayal of his character.

Characters like Cyke take longer to find their footing than the Wolverines and Downeys Iron Man, no one really cared for Cap before Winter Soldier, but these types of characters can grow on you and make a setting better, not everyone can be the bad boy or it gets boring.
