>From a second-tier Hero to one that saved the entire Marvel franchiseHow did he do it?
>>155234990RDJ's godly performance.
>>155234990marvel was looking for him to break into the mainstream since the late 80sthe MCU was just the confluence of several factors that let him actually take center stage like they wanted
>>155234990ironman has a strong foundation, the issue was that people genuienly thought he was just robotman and that was caused due to a lack of exposure to the character.
>>155234990You could do this with anyone. Remember Mvc2 making shuma gorrath popular?
>>155235011Iron Man’s rise culminating in the 08 movie as this sudden burst is interesting.Marvel almost subliminally made boys aware of Iron Man through toys and video games, he was a constant popular character in focus groups but never got a break through piece of media; couldn’t really be in movies before CGI convincingly, until the 08 movie reached this perfect equilibrium of a charismatic lead, mix of practical effects and cgi, a great design, and a hungry market.
Anyone remember that era where War Machine was more popular and more used than Iron Man?
>>155235873Oh yeah, if they tried to make an Iron Man in the 90s it would've looked like shit
>>155234990That's not spidey
>>155235923Arguably, the did try to make that kind of movie in the 90s, and it was fucking awful
>>155235923the fiberglass practical suit used in the 2008 movie could have been made in the 90s, but it would have been impossible for action sequencesthe entire weakness of the early iron man suits being locked-up when unpowered was a result of the fiberglass suit being basically just a hollowed-out statueso the muscle-armor of the 70s/80s suits would actually have been necessary for any and all scenes involving movement, which would have prevented iconic MCU suit up moments, which all worked on mecha principles of showing of gears and actuators folding out which would have been impossible without post-jurassic park CGImaybe the closest iron man could have gotten to actually working out with 90s effects would have been to envision him more as a tech-oriented sentai hero like kamen riderbut that would have been an incredibly niche audience
You say that but this was legitimately my favorite toy as a kidHe was always the strongest character in my storylines, and when his knee got wobbly he became a mentor figure to the other fighters but would still get into the action if he had toHis partner pokemon was also mew
>>155236037>didn’t give him an entire team of legendariesDid you really love him?
>>155235995Robocop was inspired in part by Iron Man( and Judge Dredd), but despite the initial plan to make him able to move like a ninja the suit just couldn’t pull it off. Conversely Hulk was the breakout Marvel hero because you could mostly pull off the visual and concept in a TV show with just a body builder. It didnt work for Spider-man or Captain America or Thor or the FF or X-men or Namor with limited SFX. Punisher could’ve worked if they had more faith in him.
>>155234990The right actorThe right time to get said actor for cheapThe right time for said actor's style of humorThe right time where CGI and practical could meetThe right year to ride another superhero movie's hypeThe right year for a story about a war profiteer becoming disillusioned with war
>>155236060That toy was from ‘94 , so anon’s childhood was probably by its end when Pokemon first came out. Barely enough legendaries in Gen 1 to fill out a team. 5 real ones.
>>155235010He really did nail that.>>155235952This had the ability to be a lot better, it was just fucked with by various shitJapan had been making proper metal armored heroes for decades.>>155235995This is also a HUGE thing. Anon is right.>>155236068What I find fascinating is that the Robocop actor trained for months to learn how to move like a robot, then had to start over from scratch once he put on the suit and felt how heavy it was.
>>155235873>>155235923People forget that Iron Man had been licensed out for a movie long before the MCU, and the rights moved around between Universal, Fox and New Line over the 90s and early 2000s, but it never got off the ground, probably because we had to wait for CGI to get good enough and affordable enough to do an Iron Man movie well.>>155235913>Anyone remember that era where War Machine was more popular and more used than Iron Man?No, that's not really something that happened. You probably just remember the time War Machine was in Marvel vs Capcom instead of Iron Man, which was because of licensing reasons, Marvel had licensed Iron Man to Acclaim at the time for a game teaming Iron Man and Valiant's X/O Manowar.
>>155236037I never got these figures but I did draw the FUCK out of my own ideas>>155236087h-hey, pokemon is for everyone..>>155236074he wasn't a war profiteer disillusioned with war, he was a businessman who intended to sell ONLY to America, who found out badguy countries were acquiring his weapons, so he decided NOBODY gets them.
>>155236126>>155236068the robocop suit was actually incapable of bending overso every time he got in and out of a car, the camera strategically cuts out from his lower half wearing nothing but boxers
>>155236140>You probably just remember the time War Machine was in Marvel vs Capcom instead of Iron ManProbably, yeah as thats what I was mostly referring to. It just felt like for a while in the early 2000s there was a lot of people who knew War Machine more than Iron Man. War Machine Avatars and Signatures and stuff. But it was probably the circles I was in. He had a brief little boost of popularity in those circles.
>>155236074>The right time to get said actor for cheapI feel like people forget this aspect of it. RDJ was basically just getting out of his second or third stint on the blacklist when this movie was made.
>>155236279>War Machine popularity boost>in the early 2000sJesus, were your friends into Chuck Austen's US War Machine comics or something?
>>155236148A guy who sells exclusively to America would be damn well aware of how much American stuff winds up in other peoples' hands.
>>155236624the reason MCU iron man stops selling weapons is because he realizes that he had zero oversight over his company because he didnt care about where they wentbeing attacked with his own weapons isnt just "the wrong guys got them" its more of a "i didnt know until it happened to me"
>>155235010He was practically typecasted for it.
>>155234990The character always had good fundamentals storytellingwise. To push to the mainstream, technology had to get to a point where you could portray it well on the big screen. And then the absolute perfect actor managed to unJUST his life in time to play the character.
>>155234990Marvel had been trying to make him a headliner for a while. He was at the front of the mid 90s cartoon push too. And comics cross advertised that cartoon more than any other.
>>155235873He sort of did in the 90s. He had a cartoon but the toy sets were probably more popular. Iron Man is just as good as Batman for being able to churn out a hundred different variant figures in different colors with different gimmicks.
>>155235995They could probably have made the Modular armor, that looks more like a typical 90s Batman Muscle suit.
>>155235913>>155236279War Machine was incredibly popular for about a minute in 94-95 but Marvel very rarely ever used him at all. He had a solo book but after a while they replaced his armor with incredibly stupid looking alien armor no one liked and then the solo book was another casualty of the 96 bankruptcy that saw all the secondary characters like Thunderstrike, Vengeance, Darkhawk, New Warriors etc be cancelled pretty much for good. War Machine rarely appeared after that until the early 00s.
It pisses me off that they chickened out and didn't do Demon in a Bottle for the second movie. RDJ brought a lot of addict knowledge to his small part in A Scanner Darkly, I feel like he could have made an actually really interesting movie version of that story, and maybe it would have made that character a lot less stupid and shitty going further into the MCU.
Iron Man was always a cool concept. He's like Batman in an iron suit.
>>155237783he had a cartoon because kids picked the iron man toy in focus groupsso this signalled to marvel that iron man had potentialbut they fumbled the ball hard with S1 of iron man barely featuring any iron man villains and using no iron man plotsS2 was a significant step up over S1, including a really cool theme song, but by then it was too late to save the ratingsthough they didnt give up on iron man and kept adding him as cameos in other peoples shows in order to keep his toys on the shelves
>>155234990The Marvel franchise needed saving?
>>155234990>I've successfully privatized world peace.I never liked the sound of that.
>>155234990>that saved the entire Marvel franchiseDid this stuff happened? not in main timaline ours that is earth-33.Your "Investors" film aren't comicbookIronman comicboook didn't sell a shit since 2006-2007.
>>155235913that must be mid-late 90s and marvel versus capcom era.
>>155240004Ironman comics should sell again through the event of Hulkbuster vs TOBA Hulk.
>>155238636>including a really cool theme songYeah they used to post it on /f/ all the time.;_;7
>>155240015No. The only reason Iron Man wasn’t in those games was due to licensing difficulties.
>>155234990and getting a new game
