What is up with all the most "popular" people from this site and almost giving up completely on animation? I find it strange how people are more familiar with these people's fucking let's plays or the games they're TOTALLY going to "finish" than they are the the animations they originally used to make.
same thing with other websites and other subjects people just wanna be celebrities while putting in the he lowest effort possible in it
>>155235549Bummer, that does explain the shift to podcasts and later let's plays. Even Max was still animating, even if it was in review form.
>>155235563old YouTube was very punishing against anything that wasn't let's play and daily vlog slop churned out at industrial ratesgetting your channel seem with animation was nearly impossible in those days given the workload required
>>155235377THERE'S NO. FUCKING. MONEY IN IT. and most of the Newgrounds upper class live or lived in the United States of America, often in rural or suburban areas. WHERE THE WELFARE. IS. SHIT.AND IF YOU WANT TO MAKE CARTOONS.YOU NEED FUCKING FOOD STAMPS.
>>155235377The entered the indie game Dev scene but ended up feature scoping their games to death the only game that has a chance of coming out is bowlbo
>>155235673I'm very happy that a few NGers managed to adapt to YT's climate, even if some (like Joe) went off the deep end.
>>155235377Because AI slop made by Indians in 4 seconds on Youtube will get 1000x more views.
I know Newgrounds used to allow Animated M/Vs (the early 2000s was SWARMING with them). But ever since they added that "no licensed music" rule I'm guessing in the 2000s because they also blammed crossover magnum opuses like THIShttps://youtu.be/8zcxppuVKME?si=nlXOYoKkX3XCaFQ2The website has mostly been a landfill for animated shitposters since the late 2010s, even though we do get visits from "veterans" from Mr. Partridge to the Wacky Lesbian Hour guy from time to time..
>>155235926>Wacky Lesbian Hour guyHad no idea Keith Stack originated from there if I'm being honest, seems like he's doing a lot better now that he's rebooted the series.
>>155235960[samefag]Also, NG enforces copyright too? I thought that was supposed to be a safe place for... say, reanimated collabs to be hosted on.
>>155235706This, there’s no fucking money in this game. They were giving you free shit when the expectations for quality are low, the dollar went further, and they could probably coast off part time jobs and/or their parents. These people are in their 40s me and living in modern times where money is getting increasingly less valuable and their safety nets are gone. The culture of internet fame changed and people sell their personalities, not their content alone.
>>155235706>AND IF YOU WANT TO MAKE CARTOONS.>YOU NEED FUCKING FOOD STAMPS.Didn't everybody pirate flash back in the day?
>>155237072they were also living at home and their mommies made them hotpockets on call anon. All these people became "famous" in their teens and 20s.
>>155237072Limewire used to be king
>>155237116My older sister used to hog the family computer all the time just to use Limewire, probably the only time I've ever seen it back when it was relevant.
>>155235377Being a creator ain't easy Even less so nowadays for reasons people already mentioned Also that you can't do the same kind of shit they used to do anymore unless you want to be an outcast
>>155237184>you want to be an outcastPerhaps this seems like a counterproductive thing to ask, but wouldn't setting yourself apart from the rest make you MORE visible, or do you HAVE to fit in with what the rest of the internet is doing? I've always figured that if you were truly yourself, you'd have an audience. (Even if it isn't big.)
>>155235377animation industry right now is in shambles after being in decline since the turn of the century. I follow a lot of storyboard artists and character designers on instagram, and every other post is a "looking for work!" thing, or ranting about how they haven't had a job in months despite having 10+ years experience and really solid skills. its so fucking brutal the only way you could probably make money and a name for yourself doing cartoons now is either go viral and get millions of subscribers/followers doing stupid shorts or reels, or grind doing a bunch of small commissions or temporary contract work. it's almost becoming a myth to get a job at a studio, then work your way up to pitching a show thats gets greenlit. executives are more cautious and skeptical than ever, unless it's got a big name attached to it or can be done for dirt cheap, they aren't interested, and on top of that they're not hiring, and when they do, there's literally hundreds to thousands of applicants, and they inevitably give the job to someone who knows someone already on the production. you used to be able to learn on the job and build a career from there, now you need an established career and clout from people already working regularly to get your foot in the door.
>>155237344>unless it's got a big name attached to itThat's why I'm glad Patrick Show exists. It's this decade's New Mighty Mouse, and I hope it leads to a bright future for animation.
OP a lot of the people you're talking about are in their fortiesEven hotdiggedydemon is considering becoming an hero from how much his body is failing him>>155237344I'm not even sure if #newdeal4animation ever did anything. The pays still have to be shit at this point since I'm still seeing what you're talking about
>>155237380>in their fortiesThat's a depressing thought. I'm going to turn 25 two years from now, and I'm thankful I haven't gotten to the "miserable" stage of my life yet.
>>155235377People only want internet animation if it's a $100k production animated by 30 people. Shitposty stuff doesn't cut it anymore and YouTube AdSense pays nothing
>>155235377i stopped using newgrounds when they accepted the mark of the beast (webp compression)
>>155237395It hit my miserable stage at 20 and it never stopped35 now
>>155237402>webp compressionARE YOU FUCKING SERIOUS!? And here I thought sites that were already enshittified like Wikia and DA had the problem.
>>155235549fpbp.there's also the constant theme of burnout across anyone who works with creative media. animators, game devs, musicians can all start out strong. their passion dwindles over time simply out of an emotion comparable to boredom.
>>155237408I hit my miserable stage when I was 21 after my friend died. It's never getting higher from here.
>>155237224Being niche ain't bad per say but it sure as hell won't get you lots of views or it will even get someone out there wanting to mess with your work if it doesn't fall within what's "acceptable" from "indie animation"
>>155237344I'm trying to become a 3D animator right now and somehow make a profitable YouTube Channel and online persona off of it, or a career somehow. How fucking retarded am I?
>>155237537You're well on your way to becoming a Vtuber. If it worked for ZONE, it'll work for you too.
>>155237411fret not, itaku.ee is a great platform that doesn't compress your files
>>155237537Post your work, then we'll decide
>>155237542Well shit, I might as well hop on this site instead of DA. Haven't used the latter in nearly a decade, and fully stopped once Eclipse removed the classic UI.
There's some of this: >>155235549You can't say it wasn't a factor. But by god it was mostly just this: >>155235673 >>155235706There's no profit incentive.Passion will only get someone so far. Believe me, I've been there, I've tried to create something with only passion on the horizon.Everyone crumple eventually.
>>1552375655MB uploads free. i pay $55 every august and i can upload up to 50MB images. they go up to 200 MB but i host by big animations on mega.nzthey support APNG animation too, by the way
>>155235377MadnessGODS stay winning because krinkel both makes animations, makes games, and plays games
>>155237584Considering that I try to draw within 1080p frames, 5MB isn't so bad. Can't say I approve of paying for larger files though, but I could easily adapt.
>>155237613well it's either a user-funded platform or it's just another ad-shitting social media site. free platforms are infinitely more likely to compress your images
>>155237628If it's user-funded, then I could easily get by that! Thanks for the recommendation.
>>155237537Very retarded. Doesn't matter how good your work is it's not gonna work.
>>155237541I'm a male so that won't happen. Plus my IRL friends told me if I ever become a VTuber they'd bully me relentlessly. >>155237553Okay, what level of delusional copium am I on. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HCndbKOTROs
>>155237723>I'm a male so that won't happen.I'm 1000% certain people put on falsetto filters.
>>155237731I did have an idea of just doing a Carl From Aqua teen hunger force voice with a Vtuber avatar and using that personality while putting barely any effort to pretend to be a girl. "Yeah Ima...totally a chick in real lifes yeah. Period cramps and all that. So you twos lesbians or sometn' ?"
>>155237723Yeah you should stop animating and kill yourself.
>>155237641they allow anything that isn't loli shit. it's mostly a porn website but i upload my starship schematics and turntables there. their assitant AI said it was cool
>>155237537Do it because you like it and want to do it as a hobby. Making money off it is just a nice bonus (if it ever happens)
>>155237893Money is more of a means to an ends for me. I just want to make the stuff, but I need money to live. Work means I have to do things that aren't making stuff. Some of the stuff I want to make requires money. So if I can make money making stuff that means I have more time to make stuff and I can make better stuff using the money I make from stuff.
>>155237772Absolute Unit beat ya to it.https://youtube.com/@absoluteunit30
>>155238065FUCK! How the fuck am I supposed to pay off the loan sharks now!?
>>155235377Because
>>155238685Can't Argue With That.
>>155235960>now that he's rebooted the seriesWhat
>>155237224Back then yeah. Times have changed for the worse.
>>155237355Whewww lad
>>155235377Too much Angry Joe to watch
>>155237537If you have another source of income go for it, if you expect to live off of being an animator well you'll most likely end up in the streets.
>>155235377Yeah, Newgrounds has mostly been fractured into the giant Sleepycabin alum group which streamlined 99% of the depth of the site into nothing, and the obscure Joe Gran camp whose only claim to relevancy is taking potshots at the Sleepycabin guys. I'm still going to use it for my upcoming project because it's the only website you can do shit on now that has decent visual design and no bullshit, but it isn't inherently networked like Tweeter or BeeSky. Picrel is a Zoe Stanley pic I downloaded from Newgrounds.
>>155237344There are too many animators now. That's it. Kids who grew up with PCs had the tech to make their dreams of making a cartoon come true so they thought they could make a career out of it. But it turns out there are just not enough studios making cartoons nor there ever were. So now the extendive ammount of supply is driving the salaries down. It's the same problem that all white collar jobs are facing especially codemonkeys. The time of making a fortune just by sitting in front of a computer is over. It was only possible back when most people still couldn't use them properly
>>155235377>Trying to make a cartoon show while I'm working a full time jobAbsolute pain but I have to make this or else my life has no meaning
>>155235377The newgrounds/Internet animation golden age is over.
>>155237794If I die I can't go swimming anymore. >>155239889My goal in the short-ish term is to able to just work a part time job and make enough money off of animation to make up the rest. Long term my unrealistic dream is to make my own indie studio one day and sell merchandise of my sexy OC's.But I kind of have a feeling that it's too late to get into the game. Like if you weren't someone who was established before you can't really break into anything. Flashgitz and Meatcanyon for example were established, all the new grounds guys were established. I'm not sure how a nobody like me can really "make" it online anymore. >>155240922I think the core of the issue is that the cost of living had risen in the US and it's just not viable to pay animators in western countries the pay they need to live within the margins. Demand for animation is higher than ever but as long as outsourcing is legal and a bag of Doritos in the US costs 6 bucks animation in the US is dead.
>>155241849It genuinely is too late. The indie scene is just a bunch of already popular/established animators.
Everyone is worried about hitching their wagon to someone elses train or creating their own content. No one is concerned about the actual issue. Where in the fuck are you going to show it? Where is the stable ad revenue funded place to show your content.Where is the non jeet-shill and bot ruined forums and social media landscape to talk about and push said media. Where is the place to get an give criticism and talk about the industry itself? The issue is that the only places to sell content is youtube and shorts...but youtube has an entirely inorganic algo that will both bury your content and steal all ability for you content to make ad revenue while still using it to collect ad revenue. Content embezzlement.
>>155235377Is a very tough job for very special people but if done correctly they have magicMost people disregard magic for centrism
>>155242364If you want to have a chance at making it, you have to diversify your revenue stream. Ad revenue is not going to be your living you need merch, commissions, and a patreon, potentially sponsorships. YouTube actually changed its algorithm to more heavily weight user satisfaction. Things like retention on your video matters more, along with sessions like if they watch another one of your videos right after the first one. YouTube is actually trying to move away from slop.
>>155235377Because they are bad about it. Without being a racist edgelord there actually animation have very little actual artistic merit.
