Be honest, we all thought it was a cartoon as kids.

I didn't know the difference in anime and cartoon till I got online in a more permanent fashion in like 2007. I was 10.
Pokemon, Yugioh, Yu Yu Hakusho. Naruto. InuYasha. DB/Z. Bleach. etc. Thought they were just US made shows.

I knew it was an anime, even back then. I could tell by the low framerate and their quirky chibi expressions they'd switch to every now and then.
>>
>>155251276
No, even at the age of 9 I knew it was anime.
>>155251354
Laura Haruna gets more cum in a hour then Misty gets in a year.
>>155251410
Laura Haruna puts her to shame, thats the power of studding from the Preston Blair book.
>>155251422
>>155251428
Tom Ruegger and Tad Stones will like to have a word with you.
>>
>>155251276
Well, that’s just how it is. Even before Pokémon, things like the fact that Voltron was a patchwork of anime footage, that Mario is a Japanese game, that the Ninja Turtles cartoon was mostly made in Japan, and that Power Rangers reused footage from the Super Sentai series, these weren’t widely known, not just among kids, but even among adults.
That is also why Pokémon caused a pretty big moral panic. Kids don't mind, but adults could tell that it was something not from the West.
>>
>>155251276
I still think it is. Let's face it, it has more in common with cartoons than anime, at least it's legacy in the West.
>>
>>155251540
Lmao, boomers had no idea what a pokemon was, their churches just told them to hare it.
>>
>>155251523
>Tom Ruegger
The guy wasn't all that funny, especially evident when he has to showrun a show entirely on his own.
>>
>>155251611
Yes he was, but he worked best with a team.
>>
>>155251618
Tom Minton was a better writer IMO. You likely know the reasons why already, so I'd rather not repeat myself.
>>
>>155251540
If even one bothered to sit down and watch one random episode they would have realized it's just a dumb show for toddlers and felt retarded for the whole Pokemon is Satanic bullshit. They preyed on people's ignorance back then.
>>
>>155251573
When it came to Pokémon, they often used the narrative that “this strange Japanese thing is causing a huge craze among kids.”
That Chinpokomon episode was basically a satire of that.
As I mentioned earlier, Japanese stuff had been imported before that, but they were usually managed to avoid looking too Japanese in some way.
>>
>>155251748
But anon, the Ninja Turtles were a huge hot and predate Pokemon by a decade.

Also no idea why the lached onto Pokemon of all things when Digit n and YuGiOh had actual satanism in them.

The fact that Pokemon games would release over in Japan first should have been the first clue it was always Japanese or Anime.
>>
>>155251573
>>155251540
ok but the pokemon moral panic is real the ghost type pokemon are actual demons yet the pokebal works on them and other pokemon alike. Its part of the lore that the dead haunt places etc this is all known you just dont connect it to the religious view. In shinto japanese culture talking to roaming daemons is normal too. So again, all in the game, all correctly identified,
>>
>>155251795
The Aardman shorts are allowed, Pokemon as a whole isn't. Although not sure why you wouldn’t just go to /vp/ anyways.

The Ninja Turtles was an American cartoon based on an American comic set in New York.
Although the animation for the first few seasons was largely done by Japanese animators, most people didn't know that.
Things with Japanese themes and things from Japan are different.

This is an interesting question about cultural terminology and perception, but I don't have precise historical data pinpointing exactly when this shift occurred in public consciousness. Let me search for information about this.
Based on my research, I can provide you with a clearer picture of this terminology shift.

## The Term "Anime" Replaced "Japanimation" in the Mid-1980s

The key transition point was **the mid-1980s**. <citation src="1"></citation> Before that, **the term "Japanimation"**—a portmanteau of "Japan" and "animation"—was **the prevalent way English speakers referred to Japanese animation**, particularly throughout the 1970s and 1980s. <citation src="1"></citation>

---

## How the Shift Happened

The adoption of the simpler term "anime" happened relatively quickly once it began. **By the mid-1980s, "anime" began to supplant Japanimation**, and today the latter term primarily appears in older works or when specifically distinguishing Japanese animation for historical context. <citation src="1"></citation>

---

## Timeline of Broader Anime Popularity in the West

While the terminology shifted in the mid-1980s, it's worth noting that anime's broader cultural breakthrough in Western countries came in phases:

- **1990s**: Shows like **Dragon Ball Z**, **Sailor Moon**, and films like **Neon Genesis Evangelion** and **Cowboy Bebop** began attracting significant Western interest.

- **2001**: **Cartoon Network's Adult Swim** launched, formally introducing mainstream American audiences to series like **Dragon Ball Z** and **Cowboy Bebop**, which helped cement anime as a recognized medium.

- **2003**: **Spirited Away** won the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, representing a major cultural milestone for anime.

So while the terminology shifted in the mid-1980s, the broader public consciousness about anime as a distinct cultural product really solidified in the 1990s and especially the 2000s.
