Long answer: Libshits like McFarlane and everyone working on Family guy circa 2000 got ass blasted over the 2000 presidential election being won by Bush Jr. because two different dems were on the Florida ticket. So they lashed out by making fun shit subtly homosexual to own the evangelicals
(McFarlane would make American Dad to lampoon American conservatism but that faded from the show)

Short answer: being gay was edgy in the early 2000s and there wasn't any substance in Family Guy when they weren't copying the Simpsons even back then, so they defaulted to pushing the envelope with shock humor.

The writers intentionally ruined Brian in order to give Stewie more depth and personality since he was just a one-note evil genius during the earlier seasons.

During the earlier seasons, Brian was best friends with Peter where he was the voice of reason to him and was more caring, snarky and intelligent.

I'm not too bothered honestly. Both Peter and Brian are written so differently in newer eps that pairing them up wouldn't make as much sense now. We'll always have those early Family Guy seasons to revisit whenever we want, and I'd like to think "Turkey Guys" works well as a cap to that dynamic.

I think Family Guy has higher highs and lower lows than the Simpsons when it comes to humor. There are some genuinely gut-busting jokes, but then you’ll get abysmal pop-culture gags that feel like they were ripped straight out of a Dorkly/Robot Chicken skit.
