Can someone give me a Moomin crash course. What exactly is it? Is it just "comfy"slop or genuinely good? Is it a large series with lore or just episodic? Do people actually watch/read it or is it just an optics/vibe thing? Is it as "woke" as tumblr fans claim?

Is it good?

Well, what you posted is anime.

The books and comic strip are good, read those

Moomin anime can be considered as /co/, just like live action super hero movies are
>>
>>155277692
did you try sitting down and watching it before asking us like it matters at all

>What exactly is it?
It's a series of books and a series of comics and a really good anime adapting the books with some elements of the comics added but the basic gist of it all is that you've got this hippo-looking thing called Moomintroll who lives with his parents, goes on adventures with his friends and that's about all you need to get into it. The "wokeness" comes from the fact that the original author Tove Jansson was known to be a lesbian. All relationships in the Moomins are straight though.

>Watch another series
>"Man this is bad but maybe it gets good later"
>Finish it
>It was bad
>Go online to complain
>"HAHAHA YOU WATCHED THAT SERIES? YOU IDIOT ITS BAD ANYONE WOULD'VE TOLD YOU THAT"

>Hear about another series
>Ask online
>"Dude just watch it yourself and form an opinion why are you asking?"

Oh wow it's almost like different people will give you different answers. Maybe you should stop relying on other people.

As others pointed out, the show is about these creatures called Moomins, who live in a fictional world, where there are canonically no humans. The show tends to be quite comfy, and most main characters have good traits, even if someone like Little My is annoying sometimes. (Many would argue in a good way.)

The show is based in the wild-lands of Finland and fantasy. If you know much about Finland's culture, you can see some of the elements ringing through even more, but it definitely has very broad appeal.

Also, many of the character's names in the books/show are the same as their species, which can be confusing.

> Is it a large series and lore, or just episodic?

The canon of the show is consistent, and there is definitely world building, but it's low stakes and relaxed. I don't think there is 'lore' exactly.

Much of the show is available in the Japanese anime dub, when Japan took the show and ran away with the production without consulting the author. This lead to some interesting interpretations of the characters that deviate from the official canon a bit.

Since this is /co/, stick with the comics and cartoons. The show is so popular, there are live-action adaptations, CG animated features, puppet shows also.

> Is it good?

I like it, but I've had friends cherry pick the episodes to watch, and the movies to watch. The comics are generally solid, except for the final book.

If you want to try it out, I recommend: "Moomins on the Riviera" (2014), to dip your toes in. It's a lovely traditional animated feature length movie, but you don't really need to know much to start.

>Is it as "woke" as tumblr fans claim?

Nope. The show was made decades before such nonsense. All characters are normal/straight.

Imagine Bone but shitty and swedish

The misconception that she was Swedish often arises because her works were originally published in Swedish and Sweden has a famous tradition of children's literature. However, Jansson was born and lived in Finland, and her cultural identity is firmly rooted in the Finnish-Swedish minority.

Identity: She is consistently identified as a Finnish author and artist, not Swedish by nationality or ethnicity.

Finnish pre-Tolkien fantasy creatures living in fictional nordic countryside. All the characters are trolls, goblins, gnomes, kobolds, witches, wizards, elves, nymphs. The non-Miyazaki anime is the popular one people talk about, because thats the one kids watched. The anime softens the melancholic writing from the novels and comics, and is mostly a slice-of-life cartoon about trolls going to adventures in their valley. What makes it "comfy"slop is the combination of Finnish writing with Japanese animating, so you get a lot of silent lingering shots or watch the snow melt from treetops. And the humor is played straight.
