Megatron and Optimus Prime was mandated across the board when the movie came out. As for Budinsky being allowed to continue the present day status quo? Supposedly Budinsky hated the movie cast and Hasbro let it slide that the book wouldn't synergize with the cartoon outside of Prime and Mega deaths and really didn't push him to use the movie cast until the Targetmaster versions of them happened.

Anons, it's time to level with you, I only have the first two volumes of the IDW reprint, covering the first 25 issues of The Transformers. Everything posted from here on will be the original printing, meaning the quality is lower but at least there won't be any funky recolors.

This part always made me wonder - why would the human go along with it? OP may be such a goody-two-shoes that he demands to be killed because he stomped some koopas, but what's to stop Ethan from blowing up Megatron and going "teehee, looks like I pressed the wrong button by mistake"?

Combaticons and Protectorbots never got origins in the US comic. Which is kind of fitting as even though the Combaticons got a big origin story in season two, the cartoon just that the Protectorbots show up already active on Earth and never showed how they came to be.

>Wipe-Out was a comic-only character whose appearance is based not on Tailgate's character model, but his toy—his design features chest details from the toy that the character model does not. Artist Don Perlin was given toys from Hasbro, since many of the Transformers' character models lacked art of their backs.[3] Presumably, a gifted Tailgate toy was part of how this made-up little dude was born.

Tailgate himself never showed up in the US Marvel comics, save for his Transformers Universe bio entry. Full-Tilt and Brunt, the Trypticon toy's actual little helper guys, were only depicted as their integrated-into-Trypticon forms.

The original Tailgate toy was a retool of the Windcharger toy. Much later, a Windcharger revisit toy was recoloured into a Wipe-Out toy.

Then, when Trypticon got a new modern toy, Full-Tilt became a headmaster, with his head robot designed after Wipe-Out.

So...why did Grimlock OD on stupid pills between issues? In #27 he talks normally and learns a lesson in leadership. In #28 he's getting fitted for crowns and already sliding into "Me Grimlock" mode. Also big shout-out to the Autobots for just accepting a psychotic leader no questions asked.

met him in person and I tried to say to him, I liked how despite the show being over, I could continue with the comics. My wording wasn't as well thought out, so he took immediate offense. I felt really, really bad because he interpreted what I sad to be, them being a direct continuation of the canon. I didn't mean that but he seemed fine to talk about the writing.

Ralph Macchio was there too. A lot more laid back about the show and comics. But that hate was physical and very present with Bob.

Loved this series as a kid.

In retrospect the Bob Budiansky stories aged better than Simon Furmans. He even did the "epic" fights better; Furman had the Unicron issue but Starscream massacring everyone felt so much more serious. Maybe because with Unicron everyone went into a blaze of glory, thinking they'll all die anyway.

and of course Furman just kept re-using his scripting over and over later, so his books read like crap now.
>>
>>155311428
It's the tone of voice as well. Bob writes moreso like he's writing a novel while Simon writes like a mid-level comic writer.

I like re-reading issues of Marvel but despise re-reading IDW. At least, the ones I could finish.

OP here, how do people feel about the pacing of these storytimes? There's a lot of comics to get through (we're not even halfway done with the Marvel run) so I've posting up to near image limit each time, but would anyone prefer it if only 100 pages (or so) were posted each day? Would that encourage more discussion or not make a difference?
>>
>>155312254
I think what you do is fine. There is no rush and too many issues in 1 thread would mean 404 before anyone could read it because of image cap or being too full for anything to talk about.

Kids are back in school so board is not so active as to die if no one posts within 5 minutes
>>
>>155311624
It's not just that, but every issue works perfectly fine on it's own as well. With IDW you had every issue being a part of a story that is part of a crossover that is part of an event, you can't just follow a book and know what is going on, you have to follow 8 different series PLUS be aware of whatever the fuck Hasbro is doing. It's intolerable. Even when I re-read the ongoings, it feels like I'm missing 90% of the story. Only the trades are readable.
>>
>>155312409
>There is no rush and too many issues in 1 thread would mean 404 before anyone could read it because of image cap or being too full for anything to talk about.
Well that's why I brought it up. We're going through like 10-12 issues per thread, but would a slower pace of 5-6 issues work better? It doesn't really matter but if I can make a better reading experience for people I'd like to. Maybe I'll try it next thread just to see.
>>
>>155312646
Good point. IDW's collection was a terrible experience.

I was fine with Robots in Disguise, but then suddenly there's the Wrecker's Saga which isn't lined up with the Spotlights but then there's also MTMTE and then there's each writer having their own take. Bumblebee had a consistent character in Marvel, while he ranges from coward, fragile, competent, and worse than starscream with OP ending up sick of him.

Horrendous quality writing because there were too many at the same time.
>>
>>155313680
>I was fine with Robots in Disguise, but then suddenly there's the Wrecker's Saga which isn't lined up with the Spotlights
...what?
The Spotlights and Wreckers stuff that happened during the RID ongoing were nowhere near each other. Are you thinking of something else?
>>
>>155313917
Possibly. The 'order' of the collection is a mess thanks to the everywhere narrative.
>>
>>155313680
MTMTE and RID made sense on their own for MOST parts, except when they had to be a part of crossovers. The one where Shockwave tries blowing up Cybertron requires reading both books plus Dark Cybertron, alternating between issues as the story goes.

Then you have the one where everyone is a combiner (I suppose that one didn't need much additional reading as it was mostly RID?), then the one where you have a bajillion zombie Titans and Nemesis Prime is back and GB Blackrock is a headmaster all of a sudden (I lost the plot at that point, it was a tie in to the Hasbro Titans Return toyline), then the one where they bring together all the Hasbro toys at which point it turns into a total clusterfuck and I couldn't make sense of anything that was going on.

By the time Unicron appeared, you had Unicron being a creation of the Dire Wraiths, you had Autobots and Decepticons, Cybertrons colony worlds, the EDF, GI Joe, M.A.S.K., ROM, Action Man, a bunch of gender politics (Arcee happy to find a girlfriend), so many original characters I don't give a rats ass about, and like 3 issues in he already ate Cybertron without any lead-up whatsoever. The Marvel books were leading up to Unicron for what, a year, two?
>>
>>155315044
>you had Unicron being a creation of the Dire Wraiths
Unicron and the Dire Wraths were both the side effects of the Antillan's detonation of their Talisman. The Dire Wraths didn't create Unicron, they were created alongside him.
>a bunch of gender politics
Not really. It took up a sliver of a sliver of sliver of content.
>>
>>155316743

>>
>>155317325
...no?
Only one issue takes place on Eukaris and the only romantic couple featured in it are Tigatron and Airazor, who are straight. I also have no idea what "two butches" you're talking about.

>Unicron and the Dire Wraths were both the side effects of the Antillan's detonation of their Talisman. The Dire Wraths didn't create Unicron, they were created alongside him.
Yeah and all of those characters except Unicron have nothing to do with Transformers. And if you didn't care for the garbage shared universe (which I did not because I read Transformers for Transformers, not ROM and Dire Wraiths), Unicron just popped up into his own mini and that was that.

>Not really. It took up a sliver of a sliver of sliver of content.
one, by that point Transformers were already a minority in their own books.
Two, of the Transformers still in the books, it was predominantly the newly introduced OCs, many of whom were fembots. Who were, even before the shared universe garbage, not only shoehorned into every book but took the major spotlight in some and even got their own minis or appeared in crossovers that took place in early G1 storylines (Ark crash landed in a volcano story). Or they were turned into the handlers of Metroplex or the biggest baddest new combiner team and so on and on.

You may argue "oh a bunch of fembots who cares" but for me who was a fan of the series since the late 80s it's the same situation as the all-female Ghostbusters movie. And the numbers don't lie either, the series was dropping in popularity so much they had to force the Unicron story and reboot everything. IDW mismanaged Transformers extremely badly and even lost the license a little while later.
>>
>>155318106
Antilla comes from the G1 cartoon, you fucking moron.
>Unicron just popped up into his own mini and that was that.
Which had nothing to do with crossovers. Unicron just straight-up was a not a factor in IDW until he suddenly was. This was a conscious, Transformer-exclusive division.
