Hello /co/, how are we today?

Been too long since I got one of these done, but here is a fresh scanlation. This time we have The Green Land, a one-shot from last year that won a bunch of awards. The writer is Alain Ayroles who you might know as the writer of Les Indes Fourbes, The Swindling Indies, which is finally getting an English physical release next year fromj Magnetic Press as A Scoundrel in the New World. The story this time is what if Richard III survived the Battle of Bosworth Field and escaped to Greenland.

Hope you enjoy, as always, please share all comments and suggestions, and I'll release this in the win'o once it's been corrected.

Same. It would have been a bit nice if maybe he did learn his lesson near the end and just fucked off to Vinland or whatever. But while I'm fine with how it ends, it just ends up feeling like we're re-treating the Shakespere story a bit, but it's colder and with more vikings.

>>155323826
This is a glaring mistake in an otherwise mostly historically grounded comic.
It is a fact that the Skraelings the Vikings met were NOT the Inuits (that name is not an actual endonym btw) but people of the Dorset culture, whom the former replaced during the "little ice age". Because they suffered from the cold almost as much as the Vikings.
But that would complicate the simplicistic "wise noble savage" narrative, no?
>>
>>155340347
Pretty interesting info, anon.
>>
>>155340347
>>155340695
They do mention that there were two groups of Skraelings, one early group that the settlers fought against and won. Then they say that there was another group that came from the North while plague hit the land.

The first group were probably the Dorset culture, the second, now while there's not really any evidence that the Black Death reached Greenland, let's say in this world it did around when it hit Iceland in early 1400s. That would make sense for the second group to be the Thule people, since they were at the time migrating South into areas the Dorset culture was previously in.

Most of what I've read posits that the Dorset culture disappeared mainly because of the opposite of the cold, that the loss of sea ice during the Medieval Warm Period, along with replacement by the Thule people.

But the research and archaeology is pretty sparse, so I'm not sure it's possible to say with much conviction what happened. All that to say, I don't agree that the comic is implausible.

What is your source for Inuit being an exonym by the way, that's the first I've heard. Unless you mean that it is an exonym specifically to peoples not speaking that branch of the Eskaleut language family, like the Yupik, in which case, fair enough, but these are Kalaallisut speakers so why wouldn't it be an endonym?
>>
>>155341253
>that the loss of sea ice during the Medieval Warm Period
*impinged upon their ways of hunting sea mammals like seals and walruses, which made up most of their diet.
>>
>>155340347
I'm not sure I see it as necessarily a noble savage story either. For me it's more a contrast of those who seek power over others, Richard and the cousins for example, and those who would work together to survive, Trunt-Trunt, Inge, etc.

Incidentally, I like >>155324685 first panel, left side, those are supposed to be the Princes in the tower

Seriously though, there is some textual evidence to show that medieval women did remove their body hair. e.g. Trotula texts (12th century so a little earlier) talking about how to do it, Moriae Encomium mocking old women tweezing their pubes before sex as if they were still young.

Violence is everywhere, and savages were not exempt, it was just structured in a different way. Most groups of humans would always try to protect their own group and just straight up murder the ones who were not "humans", just like the inuits killed the monks here.
But they did live better in those lands for generations because they had low numbers and knew how to survive.
We're all barbarians in our own ways

That's because they don't kill a ridiculous number and leave them to rot because they are only interested in the tusks for trading. Same as animals going extinct the world over, and the natives who would prefer to have some of those animals remain for food.

I think it's portrayed quite well in this comic. The greenlanders aren't doing it because they're just that evil, trade is necessary and they need to overhunt to keep it flowing.

fun thing but even if you remove richard and mathias from the equation this is 100% a thing that could happen.

There's dozens of examples of petty noblemen finding fucking surreal ways to lawfare each other and their servants in power grabs, and back in medieval times the punishment was execution or death in prison and the courts were always fucking stacked for whoever had more social influence.

Like half beasteality convictions in medieval paris was landed gentry getting rid of people/servants who were a treat to the social weave of their household
>>

It's like that today too, you just call it lobbying and corrupt lawyers today.

>you just call it lobbying and corrupt lawyers today.
since the implementation and spread of legal concepts like "evidence beyond reasonable doubt" circa the mid 1800s, it is nowhere near as bad as it could get in medieval times

Written evidence of full settlement is in 1408, with most historians guessing the settlement finally died out between 1420 and 1450. In any case worsening conditions in Iceland made it impossible to restore communications until 1721, by which point they were all long dead.
>>
>>155373376
Yeah, back then you had with hunts, but today you have immigrants knifing people to death and getting away with it because they claimed they were victims of a racist attack and defended their beliefs. We've gone full 180 from one side to the other.

Very theater-like. I remember this happening a couple of times when watching a play of Cinderella, Sweeney Todd and Ronja Robber's Daughter. The actors don't freeze in place, the lights just dim and the person talking gets highlighted while everyone else just kind of does weird NPC movements in the shadows.

if that anon is mentioning the Nowack case from the UK, then no, that was just the police not believing a victim who had been stabbed to death by a Sikh due to the victim's race. There really isn't any way to look at the events otherwise

They're not, check back on the earlier comic again and the huge cityscapes filled with detail. The comic doesn't do those much anymore.

>Was that also environmental?
It was the triple whammy of the Little Ice Age starting, the crown of Norway going to Denmark (which neglected to maintain trade links) and then the Black Plague arriving in 1402. Iceland reaches its nadir at this point, and doesn't start to recover until the 1800s.
>>
>>155380704
tbf those trade links were also becoming more irrelevant due to outside economic factors, like the ship captains' mentions here >>155323072

Thanks for uploading OP. It started off really good, but when the author made Richard some kind of evil ice demon it went downhill fast and sucked big time.
>>
>>155407281
Pretty much all historical Euro comics from the last 15 years or more give you the exact same bait and switch.
>>
>>155404446
Bit early for a bustle, or a Farthingale, especially in such an isolated place that Poulaines are still hot fashion.

>>155407281
He's not literally an ice demon, it's just native mumbo-jumbo for mental illness and being a cunt. Pretty Shakespearean desu.
>>
>>155407898
That's a shame. European fatalism is tiresome. Richard would have made an excellent anti-hero.
>>
>>155407898
Wild generalisation
>>
>>155407903
I sleep. Would have preferred to see something more inspired. Richard breaking out of the typecast of scheming deformed hunchback assigned to him by Shakespeare. A fight of the wills between his evil side (represented by his suit of armor, empty but moving) and his Kingly side (just him) could have been sweet.
>>
>>155408445
The whole comic was about a fight of wills between his good and evil side, the good side just lost, is all.
>>
>>155408477
He was mostly evil from start to finish. It was just "Richard is le bad" the comic. Again, snore.

Iceland was still a vital supply hub for fish, particularly cod. The English and Germans especially fished there regularly, and Danish interference focused mainly on keeping them out rather than building up rival trade routes.

why the fuck do we read monthly capeshit again?

to be fair even in France more readers go for the local equivalent of capeshit (or used to, I don't know that it hasn't been replaced by manga entirely) even if it's not monthly. though they do grow out of it or out of the medium

There have been manga inspired independents for a long time and even a moneymaking franchise like soleil's Lanfeust tried to reboot into some kind of manga version almost 20 years ago. "manfra" has supposedly gotten much more common but no idea how well it's competing
