I got spoiled on one thing and i came across some vague complaints, found out that apparently it angered a lot of people leading to Gooseworx having meltdowns, but i stayed as spoiler free as possible.
And honestly, i understand those complaints but for me i enjoyed it.
Yeah it could have used more episodes, and certain characters and plot points weren't handled as well as they could have, and there are still questions left unanswered but all in all the final was a chill experience with some good laughs and a satisfying enough ending even with some weird feelings it gives me due to certain decisions made made it was a good sendoff with enough nicely wrapped up and answered.
Overall i give it a good 8/10, especially for someone's first show. A performance a bit questionable but still a joy and a bit comfort to watch despite the uncomfortable elements.
I'll end this off by saying that Gooseworx making Jax his self insert was a mistake, even more so at the very end of the series.
Since I'm late to the party i have been avoiding and ignoring what people had to say, hiding post i knew would be interesting but couldn't read to avoid further spoilers, so i am very interested and excited to read what you guys have to say about Digital Circus' finally.
>>
The only thing I'll say is, Jax is amazing as a cautionary tale regarding suicide. Every member of the casy reached out to them, but Jax was so blinded by self hatred they rejected every attempt. They wanted to make themselves so hated that it wouldn't be a tragedy when they finally died.

But at the very end, after they'd done it... they regretted it.

There's no "right" way to kill yourself. Even if Jax was all alone in the circus, it would still be a tragedy because they'd never have the opportunity to becone the kind of person they want to be. And even as much as Jax tried to isolate themself, their desth left a gaping hole in the community they can heal from and move past, but will never ever really go away.

Don't ever kill yourselves, Anon.

The main problem these indi animation projects run into is the protracted dialog. The characters simply talk too much, on the nose and do very little. Jax abstracts offscreen and we get Gangle and Pomni just TALKING for like, 5 fucking minutes.

It's a visual medium, you can delete a paragraph and just show it with expression. It was clearly a project that didn't have enough editors telling them "No, this is too long, this is too direct, you don't need to tell the audience everything through written word". I know this was a writin gissue because clearly Goose wasn't writing every episode, some people on the writing team did it better than others.
>>
>>155404467
It was made by a cultist, the cult in question only being capable of making propaganda.
>>
>>155404552
>Jax abstracts offscreen

You have a point about onscreen dialogue, but I'll always defend the choice to have Jax abstract offscreen.

It completes the suicide metaphor perfectly. Jax doesn't dramatically abstract in front of everyone, he just walks away one day and everyone is left with an eternity of What Ifs and Could I Have Stopped This, Could I Have Saved Him.

I mean it was certainly a decision, but it was mainly the dialouge afterward that left me asking. "Why is this conversation more important than what I actually want to know about?"

Don't get me wrong, I loved the episode, but it's these glaring writing and structure problems in the first half of that sequence. that get me because the potential is so high. I didn't really care about Gangle and Pomni having a heart to heart about the situation as much as I was asking. "One of the main characters in functionally dead, can we see more of that situation?"

I enjoyed the show a lot, I thought it started pretty good and got better as it went.

It's worth acknowledging that now, two and a half months after the finale, that the people who legitimately bounced off the show, drifted away over time, or honestly just didn't like the finale have moved on with their lives and aren't running around talking about how bad it was anymore. Especially here, where people don't come to have reasoned discussion, but instead to have license to be trolls and assholes.

I am waiting until about a year from now for all the 'popular thing bad' backlash and teenagers who don't know anything about media analysis to work their way out of the discourse and people can talk about it without worrying about jackasses who want to tell them their stupid and morally inferior because you liked the show about the anxious clown and the asshole rabbit.
>>
I didn't care for the reveal of the characters in real life, the time spent on that should've been used to extend Caine's scene. I also wish they made Ribbit's reason to abstract more believable, having everyone else just let her fall apart didn't make much sense. The more emotionally charged scenes of them arguing with each other were great though, that's when the acting felt solid and not just another boring segment of someone talking for too long.
The show peaked for me with Gummigoo's first scene, but I really enjoyed the visuals throughout every episode. The camerawork, lighting, and the scenes did a great job at making feel like I was in that circus while watching the show at night in a dark room, and the finale probably did that the best whenever the camera was from Jax's pov. Even with all of TADC's issues, I had a great time watching it.

I genuinely have no fucking clue how people can watch the ending and think it's good. It's just a bad episode with shit writing decisions and pacing, and utterly no reason to be attached to what happens. It dropped the ball so hard that I, and many others, don't care about this IP anymore. It's such a flaccid conclusion to what was a fairly good show up to that point.
>>

>Abstraction happens in a fadeout
>Preceded by a completely out of place Pomni narration
>Said narration also makes no fucking sense because it's out of character
>Abstraction also follows everything being fixed so they have no reason to leave him alone when they literally said they wouldn't
>All these factors combined make it so that the actual abstraction isn't even jarring or "heart-dropping" just utterly confusing
They way it was handled is shit, and that's not even to mention that having it happen at the beginning of the episode kills all the buildup the show had to get to that point. Every fucking choice made when handling it was the wrong one every single time.

>>Abstraction also follows everything being fixed so they have no reason to leave him alone when they literally said they wouldn't

One, everything was NOT fixed, the process of repairing the circus was still underway. They literally were working on something when Jax walked away.

Two, when did they say they wouldn't leave Jax alone? Pomni says she WISHES she had called out to Jax, but everyone was busy repairing the circus and Jax slipped through the cracks. Yeah, Pomni tried to include Jax, telling him things like "Be there later" but none of the group had Jax on suicide watch.

I don't even get what you mean by "having it happen at the beginning killed all the buildup". It's pretty cut and dry to me. Jax abstracting himself was a foregone conclusion by that point, the point of the episode was to examine Jax's life, how he related to others, struggling to give his life meaning after he had ended it, and of course, to contrast him with Caine. Jax was given every opportunity to change, rejected them all, and died. Caine was given a single opportunity at life again after his was ended, and knew how precious it was, and worked hard for the opportunity to change. Caine embraced and worked for what Jax couldn't appreciate and threw away.
>>
>>155410156
My point is that there are no stakes. The Circus being rebuilt means that everything is going fine and dandy. Even if they took a month break, it doesn't matter, because they can get right back to it whenever they want. By the time Jax abstracts, no one's in a shit mood, which is the one of the main issues with the ending. They get over the mind scans thing pretty much immediately, they figure out how to fix the Circus immediately. There's no reason for them not to have the mental capacity to check on Jax, because there's nothing weighing on them anymore.
>Two, when did they say they wouldn't leave Jax alone?
Did you even fucking watch the show you claim to like so much?
>Zooble: "It's not like we're gonna let you run off and go abstract or anything."
Literally in the exact previous episode. They decided to stand as a group, and I would understand if unexpected circumstances makes it so they can't hold themselves to what they said, but like I said, by the time he abstracts there's no reason why they didn't even fucking try to include him. I'm pretty sure Goose knew this, which is why he had to add Pomni's narration to try and justify it, but all it does is bring even more attention to it by breaking the show's immersion by adding something that was never in the show prior. Pomni's narration came out of fucking nowhere, it was jarring, and it poorly justifies a shitty writing decision.
>I don't even get what you mean by "having it happen at the beginning killed all the buildup".
Buildups have a climax, the one moment everything builds to and all the tension is released. Everything about Jax's situation is anticlimactic despite the show wanting to act like we get some crazy emotional resolutions with him. Like I said, the way his abstraction was handled leads to it being a muddled confused mess. There's no emotional resolution to Jax's depression that leads to the abstraction, because it happens just because (cont).
>>
>>155410156
>>155410358
The rest of the episode is spent "exploring" Jax, but you gain nothing out of it outside of learning he had a shit mom. We know he's an asshole, we know he pushed Ribbit away and caused her to abstract (or at least we could strongly infer it), and we know he fucked up. Again, any emotional resolution we'd get the climax of Ribbit's role in the story is pissed away, because we don't gain anything from learning how it happened, it's pretty much what you'd expect. If anything, learning that it wasn't entirely Jax's fault and there was more the situation than him being a dick would've made everything far more interesting and gives a justification for peering into his mind and seeing how badly he blames himself for something he wasn't entirely at fault for. There's no real resolution to Ribbit and Jax's relationship, nothing changes the way we view since the first time it's mentioned. Finally, we have the big climax of the episode, which is the hug. Even that is completely worthless, because it's showing Pomni still wouldn't have given up on him (even though she literally did), followed by a big show of affection that feels like it's supposed to lead somewhere, but much like all the buildups, it leads fucking nowhere. Nothing happens, Jax isn't saved, Pomni gains nothing, she's pulled out of the abstraction just because and also the flashbang is the actually the worst fucking writing decision they used to try and "justify" some big change of scenery that makes the climax "swell". It's all a confusing mess that ends in nothing. By the end of all of this, nothing has changed. Jax isn't more understood, he isn't saved, everyone else is fine because they got over their shit in the first ten minutes and even before that decided to be a team earlier. Pomni doesn't gain anything or even lose anything. Nothing fucking happens. Finally, there's Caine.
>>
>>155410358
>My point is that there are no stakes

You have fundamentally misunderstood the finale. There's a reason the final episode was paired with the Caine freakout episode. The Caine freakout was the action packed climax, the final episode is the emotional denouement and payoff.

>By the time Jax abstracts, no one's in a shit mood, which is the one of the main issues with the ending. They get over the mind scans thing pretty much immediately, they figure out how to fix the Circus immediately.

Neither of these are true. The group fractures at finding out they were never "real" and have to slowly come back together and moce forward. Hell, for Jax, whose entire modus operandi for the series is "nothing matters", the confirnation that they're just brainscans was the proof he needed and the final straw that ultimately convinced him to abstract. The journey into his fading mind is to prove that he was wrong, and that it all mattered but he didn't realize it until it was too late.

>There's no reason for them not to have the mental capacity to check on Jax, because there's nothing weighing on them anymore.

Do you understand that the other characters had emotions too? That finding out you never really existed and that now you need to train your computer powers to repair your home over the course of months could maybe effect their mental state?

>Literally in the exact previous episode. They decided to stand as a group, and I would understand if unexpected circumstances makes it so they can't hold themselves to what they said

The unexpected circumstances are literally Kinger killing the mad god holding their reality together and the shocking, emotional revelation that they never existed and maybe nothing meant anything. They all were pushed to their limits, Jax was just the only one in such a state that they broke.
>>
>>155410525
>There's no emotional resolution to Jax's depression that leads to the abstraction, because it happens just because

The resolution was that he regretted killing himself, he regretted isolating his friends and pushing them to suicide, but some small comfort in the revelation that as hard as he hated himself and tried to push everyone away, he still mattered and was loved by someone. That brought him some comfort, even if it's a tragedy that he can never live in that love.

>Even that is completely worthless, because it's showing Pomni still wouldn't have given up on him (even though she literally did)

Jesus H. Christ, if your loved one doesn't hover over you 24 hours a day, they "gave up on you"? EVERYONE in the circus was going through shit. Pomni even says she wishes she had checked in more often with Jax, but a constant throughout the series is Jax doesn't want to be saved. If he had said "Pomni, can we just hang out for a few minutes?" Then he probably wouldn't have abstracted. But everyone reached out to Jax as a first step, and he always turned them away.

>If anything, learning that it wasn't entirely Jax's fault and there was more the situation than him being a dick would've made everything far more interesting and gives a justification for peering into his mind and seeing how badly he blames himself for something he wasn't entirely at fault for.

The entire point was to show that Jax did something terrivle, unforgivable, and something he hates himself for. He HAD to be mostly responsible. Because the point is that by that point he thought he was unlovable and irredeemable, so he wouldn't accept the friendship and love of the others when they offered it to him.

The entire point is, nobody is so unlovable and despicable that they can kill themselves and not have it be a tragedy.
>>
>>155410156
>>155410358
>>155410498
Caine being a parallel to Jax fucking sucks the way it was handled. The first issue, which most people agree with, it was rushed. There wasn't nearly enough time to explore Caine's revival and change in any meaningful or satisfying way. Secondly, bringing him back ruined the one genuinely good "abrupt" death in the show. Caine's sudden deletion without being able to justify himself, while he's going fucking crazy worked and it was impactful, and was snappy with it's sudden death. It correctly produced the "heart-dropping" moment I was talking about, unlike the absolute mess of Jax's situation. Thirdly, he's an AI, his emotional issues are literally resolved by him removing a dysfunctional part of him, there's no catharsis in him learning shit, because he's not human. He just fixed himself and that's all there was to it. Fourth, even with the limited time they had, they wasted it on a sequence of him going up some fucking stairs which added nothing to his character and was pretty much a complete waste of time. Finally, and this kind of goes hand-in-hand with the first point, we don't have the time to see him slowly get accepted back and trying to change. The group basically welcomes him with open arms in the montage even though they said "it would take a while" and it leaves a bad taste in your mouth all for the sake of a "happy ending".
>>
>>155410525
Anon, I'm not asking for the ending to have action, I'm asking for the ending to deliver on the stakes it built on. The finale starts with the Circus destroyed and with the realization that they aren't even real, just copies. We should've sat, dwelling in that for a while, seeing them actually try to cope with their completely fucked situation. Nothing about how they dealt with it is "slow", everyone gets over it and happily start rebuilding the Circus within ten minutes of the episode. We never get the time to explore the absolute toll this situation would have on them. Like for fuck sake, we see more emotion and interesting character exploration from them because of Jax's abstraction rather than the initial situation.
>Do you understand that the other characters had emotions too? That finding out you never really existed and that now you need to train your computer powers to repair your home over the course of months could maybe effect their mental state?
Then show it, because Kinger got over it and got down to business immediately, Pomni got over it. And as far as we can see, everyone got over it. Again, after the first shock of the situation, we don't see them devastated and grappling with the situation until Jax's abstraction. They're all participating and fixing shit, getting along just fine. There is literally no justification for Pomni's character to not try and reach out to Jax when he's the only one not participating and in fact we see her contemplate it, but then not commit for some reason. It goes against her character completely and is why they needed to add out of place narration, because they're clearly trying to (poorly) justify a decision that Pomni would never fucking make.
>>

But if ya people wanna call pornography and gooners a cult then go ahead, i'll agree with that.
>>
>>155410581
>he still mattered and was loved by someone
Except for when that love mattered, kek. Again, Jax has no cathartic emotional conclusion, you can say what you want, but we don't see Jax going through these stages of anger, regret and acceptance, it just immediately skips to Pomni going "you should've talked to me man" and then him crying as if we went on some kind of journey discovering these things about himself. Ironically enough, for the episode that's meant to be about exploring Jax, we barely fucking explore him, instead we waste time on flashbacks that only serve to tell us stuff we pretty much already knew plus that his mom was mean to him. Jax dies, then we see the real him for one second crying, then he dies again for real. There are many stories that follow a character who comes to regret their life and death, and a lot of them end with them moving on and dying accepting their situation, but the one thing that all these stories have in common is that they actually focus on the character's journey through all of that emotional turmoil. We only see Jax at the end of it and so the big climax of the episode means nothing, because we as viewer didn't actually get to meaningfully explore Jax.
>Pomni even says she wishes she had checked in more often with Jax
Just because a character says something, doesn't mean it's good writing. In the situation they were in? When she knows Jax is the only one not participating? When everyone already agreed to be on suicide watch? When none of the characters were actually depressed after the fucking nine minute mark? When Pomni has always tried to include Jax in things and it usually works out? When he's clearly at the lowest he's ever been?
>The entire point was to show that Jax did something terrible
Okay, but we basically could already infer this. It does nothing for us as an audience to show this. This is why I said if they were going to show it, then at least make it interesting or have it recontextualize things.
>>
>>155410581
>>155410953
There's two ways you could've played the flashbacks, either have them be not what we pretty much expected them to be, or have Abstracted Jax there to confront them with Pomni so that we see the emotional journey he has to go through to understand his regrets and Pomni's love before disappearing forever. We get neither.

I genuinely forgot about that one, we'll have to chalk it up to useless easter egg shit like the "Chill Fellas" thing
>>
>>155414026
Chill Fellas should've built up to an ARG that was somehow related to the leak back in May, which should've been revealed to be a fake leak.

Yeah, that's a big part of why i said making Jax a self insert was a mistake.

I think one really disappointing thing about the show is that the Circus itself should have been its own character, we see so many fun and bizarre set pieces in the pilot (the infinite merry-go-round, the screaming bathub guy, the barrel monkeys, the Gloink cave...) only for them to never really be relevant again. They even lampashade the fact that the gang never explores anything.

>more than [Circus Shit]
What part of "enough" do you not understand?
>ya [sic] watch [Circus Shit] as well?
If half of a pilot episode constitutes "watching," in the present tense, then sure. Thankfully, I'm not retarded, so I'll answer with "No."
>>
>>155414156
Oh man i am actually disappointed that we didn't get much of the circus itself, the namesake of the show.

So you're going to be the guy who shoves your fingers in your ears and shout "lalalalalala!!!" about this huh?
Is it fair to call ya a troll?

I see you're there already.

I rebuke your insults and lies.
Have ya not been reading your own posts?
If ya hate Digital Circus then explain why, if ya have no reason then don't be a troll about it, you're adding nothing to the thread.

What's wrong with killing yourself? We're gonna die anyway eventually lmao

Fetish-cult propaganda targeted at children. I may have said this before.

There's such a thing as going too early.
I don't even think anyone has used that excused to try to make light of murder or genocide.

Should the thread continue or should i bring my review onto the main Digital Circus general?

>Then show it, because Kinger got over it and got down to business immediately, Pomni got over it.

I wanna preface this by saying I'm actually really enjoying this debate, despite our differences in opinion. It's noce to have an actual conversation on 4chan once in a while that's not dominated by /pol/ buzzwords.

Anyhoo, Kinger is repeatedly shown to be the most resilient because one he made the damn thing they're stuck in and two he's a little bit crazy. Pomni was also said to be incredibly emotionally resilient, adjusting to the circus in days rather than months or years. It makes sense they'd be the first to put the existential crisis aside because there's holes in the floor that need mending.

>There is literally no justification for Pomni's character to not try and reach out to Jax when he's the only one not participating and in fact we see her contemplate it, but then not commit for some reason.

I, fortunately, have never had anyone in my life kill themselves, but I related to that feeling a lot actually. It's hard to gauge sometimes, especially with unstable or suffering friends, when and how to reach out. Will they think I'm smothering or meddling? Will they resent it?

Pomni and the others made it clear they were there for Jax, but at some point you can't be saved if you don't want to be saved.

>Caine

I actually agree I wish we had spent more time with him and his redemption. But I DO think it was important he have that redemption to counterbalance what happened to Jax. If it was just Jax abstracting, the story would be "Some people can't be saved," which is a dreadfully sad story. Caine showed that "People can change and be saved, but they have to want it."

I'm enjoying the debate here, but whatever you feel works best.

Well if you're enjoying them OK, feel free, but i hope that i can get the discussion i am looking for but i won't try to stop what you're enjoying as long as it's not bad, annoying or obnoxious.
I'll copy/past the OP in the main Digital Circus thread once this one archives.

I've been enjoying this debate too. I always enjoy sharing my opinions about things, even if I can get a bit heated about it. And whenever I do argue about it, I feel like I always come out of it having gained something new, though to be honest, it's usually less appreciation for the ending. However it is something that's new that's gained from the conversation that I wouldn't have gotten without exploring why I dislike it so much as in-depth as we have. Anyways, back to the discussion at hand. The first point seems to be something we're at a complete impasse on, where you feel it's believable that they wouldn't give Jax the attention he needed, while I don't. Like I said, the context of everything is why it's simply unbelievable to me. Let me put it this way: We see Gangle have a bigger emotional arc over her complicated feelings concerning Jax's death over her finding out she's just a copy. That contrast is just so weird and shows me that there was basically nothing for the characters to grapple with or get over about the copy reveal outside of just getting over the initial shock. Jax's abstraction is what's supposed to lead to their emotional turmoil, but it's fucking stupid when they could've easily helped them, as they clearly weren't experiencing any turmoil and had basically promised to do so.
>It's hard to gauge sometimes, especially with unstable or suffering friends, when and how to reach out.
I understand this feeling too, but this kind of stuff is much easier to show in a realistic scenario. You're not spending time with your friends basically every single moment of your life outside of sleep. Due to that, it's much easier for this kind of stuff to slip through the cracks in real life, especially if they don't show huge signs of depression. These guys see Jax every single day, they've seen his mental decline steadily, they know this isn't normal, they've seen him participate less and less until he doesn't at all (cont).

This show is highly satanic because it was made by a trannysexualised

And they tell him outright that they won't let him abstract. The issue is they don't even fucking try when they have no reason not to. It's not like they missed the signs or are oblivious. And that's the issue with Pomni's narration, it lampshades the entire situation by giving a poor justification for not reaching out at all, and it does it by breaking your immersion with out of place narration. If Goose didn't want to bother with showing the character's get absolutely fucked by their initial situation and still have everyone get over everything immediately, then I think what would've been more shocking and more heart-dropping is have everything seem like it's working, they reach out to him, he's doing fine and then abruptly cut to his abstraction, showing just how fucking bad it was. Make a big climactic moment out of Jax getting better, building on from the rest of the buildup from the rest of the show and then make it crash. I'd probably dedicate the first twenty minutes of the episode to that, and then I'd explore Jax's regret and acceptance of his death for the rest of the runtime, plus conclusion and everything, instead of wasting time on pointless flashbacks. And this is just one idea of many on how the ending could've played out in a better way. You don't need Jax to start participating, but then you need to develop everyone's turmoil. Or you can have Jax abstract at the end of the episode, or you could even save Jax. There's a million better ways for the story to have concluded than what actually happened, even with maintaining the original themes. It's just the way Goose ended up doing it is complete shit.
>Caine
I just think Caine had a perfect end, and the only justification for ruining that by bringing him back is by giving us something even better, which they didn't (cont).
>>
>>155417507
>>155422165
>>155422256
The only thing I liked about him coming back, and is probably the only thing I think was actually executed well in-terms of leaving you with something to think about and concluding an "arc" that was built throughout the show, was his conversation with Moon. It was a genuinely beautiful and touching moment, framed by really nice scenery, and gives us a kind of closure on the NPCs. In a way, I don't regret Caine coming back, because we end up getting basically the only good moment out of an entire episode of shit because of it, but if the episode was much better, I would've been even more critical about him coming back than I already am.

The final episode was largely underwhelming and difficult to accept. Do you think it's the most disappointing thing you have ever watched?
