OTGW is 100% born out of the beanmouth zeitgeist of 2010's, it simply is the most well made example and it didn't go on for years to suffer seasonal rot.It also stands out because there isn't anything else in mainstream western TV animation like it.

He's actually written like a small child and not a young adult like every other 8-year-old cartoon character. Like an actual child, he doesn't really understand the gravity of the situation he and Wirt are in. He often adds nothing to the dialogue when he talks because most kids are just motor mouths saying the first thing that pops into their head. He's a fine character in the context of the show, I think. He's frustrating to Wirt and Beatrice but it's because he's written like an actual, mostly helpless child.
