When it first released everyone agreed that it was the worst Pixar movie, it’s okay at best. Nowadays zoomers think it’s on par with The Incredibles, what the fuck happened?

>When it first released everyone agreed that it was the worst Pixar movie
Yes, because unlike their previous offerings, Cars seemed to lean heavily on kid/pop culture appeal; between all the licensed car makes, actual NASCAR celebrity casting, pop/country music, and Larry the Cable Guy, it seemed more like a focus-group tested commercial endeavor.
>Nowadays zoomers think it’s on par with The Incredibles, what the fuck happened?
Adults were cynical and agreed it was the "worst pixar movie" because it was blatantly meant to appeal to kids. But all the kids who watched it fucking loved it. And now those kids are adults who appreciate the movie for its thoughtful, timeless message of friendship and teamwork, and a charming depiction of a world populated by talking automobiles.

all it takes is one meme video

I always liked it

dummbaaaaaaaaaaasssssssssss

Early 2000s Pixar was glazed super hard as this sophisticated studio that was elevating the art of animation and headed by Walt Disney's creative heir.
As a movie about Nascar and Larry the Cable Guy, Cars was seen as them suddenly making lowbrow Dreamworks tier slop and it pissed them off so much that they had to start concocting shared universe theories about how Larry the Cable Guy genocided all of humanity and killed all the good Pixar characters.
>>
>>155409125
kids liked it and are now old enough to say that on the internet, that's it.

Antz, Shrek 1, Shark Tale, and Madagascar 1 aren't slop

Cars is Pixar’s most milked franchise, have you seen the amount of diecast cars they made?
https://pixarcars.fandom.com/wiki/1:55_Scale_Die-Cast/Gallery
When I was 5 I would let my mom buy the fuck out of these, I still have a lot of them sitting around in my basement. My opinion soured on the film as I got older but I feel like tons of zoomers like me brought all those goddamn toys of the film as a kid and thought that the film was good cause of all that shit.
>>
new bot?
>>
>>155409125
Pixar gained the reputation of being a sophisticated animation studio. Cars was their most lowbrow film. That's why people flip over Cars 2 when the "author's personal story" films are what really damaged the studio.
>>
OP will NEVER win the Piston Cup
>>
>>155409534
I mean, yeah, that's my entire point. People overlook things like that when they're kids, but hyperfixate on it once they're old and cynical.
>>
>>155409653
I fucking hate Up and what it did to Pixar and society as a whole.
The opening scene has its own Wikipedia page for Christ's sake.
>>
I’m not a zoomer and I always thought Cars was good, all of the pre-Up Pixar movies are. I think people were just mad about all the merchandising.
>>
>>155409125
I always liked it.
I like cars
I like the American southwest
I like Paul Newman
I like route 66 small town Americana.
I don't care if the plot is just a rip off of Doc Holoywood.
>>
Because the movies they make now are even worse so even their pooer showings from their greatest era look great in comparison.
>>
>>155409125
I like Cars, Zooomer btw.
I didn't hate it, like the performative manchildren seething about it 20+ years later.
No, it wasn't as good as The Incredibles, seethe.
>inb4 seethe?
Yes, you're seething that a zoomer just disproved your made up claim that zoomers think Cars is on par with The Incredibles and you would rather zoomers agree with your delusions because that would make the things you ponder about true, which they're not. You'd rather the world be a worse place so you can feel good about yourself. Quite sad, and quite insane that your narcissism revolves around what 20-30-40 year old children's movies you like and don't like.

Even when I was the age for this film, I never really cared for it.

The general consensus seems to be that Toy Story 3 was the final film of golden age Pixar, but the way I see it:
>Toy Story-The Incredibles - Golden Age Pixar

Most of these films are excellent, a Bugs Life was the least good of this lineup but even then there’s a lot to praise about this film, Toy Story and the Incredibles definitely hold up as the best films from this period.

>Cars-Toy Story 3 - Silver Age Pixar

A mild decline begins, there’s a lot of good stuff in these films but there’s also some stuff that shows what’s to come for Pixar, Ups opening was great but the rest of the film was just good and had shit like marketable dogs in it, Cars as other anons said was definitely lowbrow for Pixar standards, Toy Story 3 was great but was the start of the marketable sequels for Pixar, etc.

>Cars 2-Onward - Pixar’s Downfall
Tons of pointless mediocre sequels flood the studios lineup as well as tons of mediocre or bad original films like Brave and The Good Dinosaur

>Soul-present -NuPixar

Mostly a bunch of millennial-made garbage made for manchildren.

UP is good, it just marks an important generational divide in pixar movies. Everything up till Wall-E was planned out in that one lunch meeting, and everything after UP was Pixar in the wilderness without a plan.
>>
>>155409125
Cars was based. cars 2 fucking sucked even back then and cars 3 could have been a good sendoff but they chose the worst possible ending for it.

The other ending they had planned was way cooler.

As a 26-year-old man who saw this movie in theaters during its initial run, I have literally always recognized this as Pixar's first failure after peaking with The Incredibles, and it doesn't even appeal to a non-critic who only cares about the sequence of events, because the story is almost as depressing and pitifully mundane as Bolt.

Bolt is comfy.

It is not that complicated. Little boys that liked cars watched that movie in 2006 and now they grew up and still like it because nostalgia.
>>
>>155410884
I hate TS3, it's a miserable slog and everyone söying out over it in 2010 made me notice something was wrong with millennials
>>
>>155412564
the planned ending was
>steerling, the guy who buys rusteze, boots mcqueen and puts cruz in the race because he was tracking their data during training and cruz was beating mcqueen almost every time.
>the crowd screen mcqueen's name because they wanna see him race still
>tex, the texan car the own dinaco, hires mcqueen on the spot, the paint him with docs hoc colors and he wins the race one last time

personally i would have liked to see mcqueen in Dinaco's blue

I don’t think Up was bad but it was an inflection point
>>
>>155413006
Ups opening is what gave Pixar the reputation for tugging on heartstrings, it’s a good movie, but that opening is where it peaks quality wise, a lot of emotional moments from the 2010’s-2020’s Pixar films just feel sappy and superficial.

Fuck people who gave Pixar the "we make emotional films" reputation, Incredibles was their best film and it didn’t have any sappy emotionally manipulative shit, it had an attempted suicide, depictions of actual crime, a high kill count, and terrorism, we need more Pixar films like that, really toughen those kids up.
>>
>>155413941
I wouldn’t really agree with that, it’s a touching well written scene that establishes the characters of Carl and his motivations, the problem is just that the rest of the movie isn’t as good, you can really tell that talking dog animal sidekick was something the executives wanted.

Real emotionally manipulative moments are the shit modern Pixar pulls, like that shitty “le realistic panic attack" in Inside Out 2, that cliche death fakeout in Elio, all that stupid shit in Lightyear, etc.
>>
>>155409125
>When it first released everyone agreed that it was the worst Pixar movie,
At the time it was, but worst Pixar movie didn't mean bad.
>>
>>155409125
I don't know. I saw it when I was 6. I liked it. I honestly don't care to revisit it, so I can't give a proper judgment on its quality. I don't know where you're seeing this "huge critical reevaluation" of a kids' Nascar movie that people liked, and is honestly probably still fine. Maybe you should get off twitter.
Honestly, even the dodgiest classic age pixar film is still probably a B+ overall.
>>
>>155409125
Even if you think Cars sucked, you have to admit that, in light of Pixar's output over the last 15 years, it was judged too harshly at the time.
>>
>>155414800
Cars is the Star Wars Prequels of Pixar, it was hated at the time, but nowadays since the studio makes even worse shit we got people acting like it’s good not realizing there was a reason it was so hated.
>>
>>155414864
What was the reason?
>>
>>155409125
Isn't it obvious? Zoomers grew up and think the shitty movie they grew up with is good because they had a ton of toys and merchandise of it as toddlers

The less I say about Cars 2, the better; but that very first Cars fits in nicely with classic Pixar. I feel like people tend to let Disney's abuse of the franchise and mountains of merch throughout the years affect their perception of the film on its own merits. It's your typical "pompous star gets humbled" premise, but it's got loads of charm. I also love seeing Mater and McQueen's friendship blossom https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HF0s-pXOHck
>>
It's a mix of the people who watched it as kids are now grown up, and Pixar getting much worse. I did a Pixar marathon, and I didn't like the movie, but after seeing Pixar's later shit like Toy Story 4 and Light Year... yeah, Cars isn't that terrible compared to that shit.
