All of the discussion around Lesbian Space Princess and Willow got me thinking about good girls trapped in trash.
I just tried watching Sinking Road and it was terrible but at least Snoozy was cute.

I think it is a feather since she is surrounded by pillows. Whatever it is it is a distracting and unnecessary design detail.

The whole thing is only mainly entertaining because it's so damn weird.
>Clowns + Dharma Buddhism + Hazbin Hotel
It's just so fuckin weird.
>>
>>155413065
What is even weirder is that it has all of that shit and still manages to be mostly boring.
You would think that it would at least be kind of a train wreck but a majority of the run time is characters having dull conversations.

One big issue is I don't understand her motivation once she gets down to "purgatory" there.
She has to look for the other "Dharmic attachment" representations and what... ascend or be reborn or be revived?
There's direct implication too to detaching from "Dharmic attachments" that really don't seem to apply to her in any sense other than... exploring them... and you have these characters who act as totems for the "Dharmic attachments".
Then the weird murder clown trying to murder the gluttony king?
Then the strange sexual stuff too with the angel coded clown in a representational Buddhist Dharmic story?
The theater scene, and then the bar scene too with drinking was bizarre.
It's just kind of all over the place for a semi-symbolic, semi-spiritual story telling that tries to orbit around Dharmic Buddhism and spiritual attachments.
What's worse, is there's stronger "Eastern" spiritual teachings and representations in ATLA.

But again, it's just a weird attempt at paralleling with Hazbin Hotel, but instead of Christianity as the basis of the world, it's Buddhism and Clowns instead of Demons and Sinners.

Very... unique way of trying to do things... very bizarre even, especially with some of the sexuality randomly in there.
>>
>>155413676
Yeah, it's horrendous for the outro.
The Miku stuff is... interesting...
Then the creator is pro-trans of all things too. Which I don't think Buddha would of been agreeing them on multiple levels.
I'm just intuiting, since the creator clearly has a thing for Buddhism and Clowns...

I have no evidence but I get the feeling this show was also supposed to take place in hell then Hazbin happened.

If they didn't make the amazing writing decision to just have the king say outright that him and the other clowns represent the 8 Buddhist Precepts I never would have guess since they seem far more easy to interpret as the usual deadly sins from Christian tradition.
It was also genuinely bizarre for the plot to be explicitly Buddhist while taking absolutely no Asian design influences.
I have to admit that I bailed part of the way in but do they ever point out that all of the precepts are the exact opposite of how they should act or do they just never bring that up?
>>155414762
It has to be a mix of that and kids who don't know any better.

>It was also genuinely bizarre for the plot to be explicitly Buddhist while taking absolutely no Asian design influences.
It doesn't even have to fully commit to Asian design, but it would help a lot if there was "some" to kind of give a hint-hint at it. But it should of at least tried to present the spirituality, or symbolism in a more clear light.

I don't think the creator fully understood wtf she was trying to represent either very well.

I had to do some digging into this, because I only know a shallow understanding of Buddhism, but some things do parallel with Christianity like detaching away from obviously bad habits that some overlap with the Seven Deadly Sins, although the system presented is more... convoluted than simply saying "maybe don't be prideful, and sex obsessed".

The creator did a poor job of representing, and ultimately mixing the Four Requisites (it's prerequisites to living a monastic life, but there's more to it than that) which are, Clothing, Food, Lodging, Medicine.
Then mixing that up with the Five Hindrances (you can intuit what that means) of, Sensual Desire, Ill Will, Restlessness + Worry, and Doubt.
And then the whole thing is kind of wrapped up in this Clown Hazbin Hotel like purgatory...
But how does this relate to the protagonist? She's just kind of going along for the ride as the totems of Dharmic attachments and ideas interact with each other, in like a sit-com, non-representational way?
It's just bizarre.
I'm still convinced this is someone's autismo reaction to wanting to create their own Hazbin Hotel, but with Buddhism and Clowns. Since Hazbin Hotel is pretty "clown" coded with their designs too.

There's small clips where the precepts are dressed in traditional garb. That aside, all of these choices can be explained by one sentence: "I wanted to make a project about the Christian afterlife but I'm scared of being called a Hazbin clone". Think about it, really think about it. The precepts embody the *opposite* of what they should be, which turns them into knockoff 7 Deadly Sins characters. Snoozy is sloth, Goldilocks is greed, the priestess is lust, etc. Dottie is basically Dante navigating Hell. So much shit gets compared to Hazbin that I get not wanting to be compared to it but last minute veering into Buddhism makes everyone go "what the fuck" instead. This was made by a Swede. No Swede thinks of Buddhism when asked about religion. It's original on the surface but I would have rather she committed to doing Christianity instead of pretending to give a shit about Buddhism.
>>

>Then the creator is pro-trans of all things too. Which I don't think Buddha would of been agreeing them on multiple levels.
can you expand on this? I'm ignorant of Buddhism. And are we talking about Siddhartha or another Buddah?
>>
>>155417372
>"I wanted to make a project about the Christian afterlife but I'm scared of being called a Hazbin clone"
>Christian afterlife
It's ironic, because Hazbin does nothing with that concept of exploring the mythos of the Christian afterlife and only wears it as a thin skin to play around with.
>The precepts embody the *opposite* of what they should be, which turns them into knockoff 7 Deadly Sins characters. Snoozy is sloth, Goldilocks is greed, the priestess is lust, etc. Dottie is basically Dante navigating Hell.
You have a point there. I didn't really see it until you mentioned it now.
>No Swede thinks of Buddhism when asked about religion.
I doubt they're religious in any sense of the word anymore, since Euros have been on a deathmarch to being Atheists as Islam takes them over slowly, kek.
>rather she committed to doing Christianity instead of pretending to give a shit about Buddhism.
Yeah, I agree after reading your post. She should of committed to it. But the similarities now are kind of damming if she did.
>>

Islam is still Abrahamic and a decent chunk of lore still has roots in the other 2 religions. It would still be more familiar to this girl than fucking Buddhism. I don't want people to shy away from making *good* Christianity based projects, for fucks sake someone has to save us from Hazbin's gay sex musical bullshit. There's an audience for a project that makes use of the lore but it isn't capitalized on at all. The most you get is pop culture demons and that's it. Another damning thing is that this chick has a self insert OC called Baphomet. And you are expected to believe the original intention of this movie was Buddhism? This whole thing of "the precepts don't embody their values because the monks used them as vessels to contain their indulgences" is a long winded way to justify why they act like sins instead of virtues. People need to stop being scared of getting called rip offs, it's not like Hazbin is good. In any case, even if she did commit to Christianity, she obviously didn't have any intention to use the religion to the full potential if this is what she does to Buddhism.

It's really ironic that all these "creators" put literal demons on a pedestal, and identify with demons as an alter ego, while shitting on what is canonically the "good" side which is Heaven. And then all share a highly specific set of politics.
>I don't want people to shy away from making *good* Christianity based projects, for fucks sake someone has to save us from Hazbin's gay sex musical bullshit.
That's like every project currently. It all revolves around some form of "sexy misunderstood demon". Hell, K-Pop Demon Hunters is literally that. I don't think we're going to see another Prince of Egypt anytime soon, or really any "good" representation of Christianity that isn't a sanitized fundamental re-telling of the same story, or some aesthetic repeated themes that really don't try to challenge the status quo (Castlevania anime). A lot of plots are it all boils down to Christian religion bad, because of a corrupt priest or priesthood. I haven't really seen anything really unique out of the genre.
Constantine (Keanu Reeves) is the most close I can think of that does is good.
>And you are expected to believe the original intention of this movie was Buddhism? This whole thing of "the precepts don't embody their values because the monks used them as vessels to contain their indulgences" is a long winded way to justify why they act like sins instead of virtues.
Now that you pointed it out, it really is obvious and ham-fisted.
>In any case, even if she did commit to Christianity, she obviously didn't have any intention to use the religion to the full potential if this is what she does to Buddhism.
Exactly, I don't think these creators have any deeper thoughts or ideas about religion as a whole past "sex jokes and swearing" and "abstinence is bad".
>>
>>155419607
With the amount of demon shit in the indie space, heaven would be a change of pace. But that runs the risk of "heaven but le bad" subversion anyways. A lot of lib creators attempt to tackle the subject matter with an already cynical view of Christianity that the potential is DOA. There always has to be some kind of "deconstruction" on how problematic it is. We live in a fucking contrarian, irony poisoned media landscape. But demon shit is what sells. Not sure if angel shit would even succeed in this climate or if the anons in this fucking board would even spare it a glance instead of gay demons #39390
>>
It's funny how sometimes you can literally just look at something and see the creator's brain damage leaking through. Learning about the premise of the show just confirms it.
>>
>>155419736
some people would kill for the artistic ability to translate their inner ideas to the medium like that, ironically
>>
>>155419607
>>155419655
It is a bit hard to do positive Christian stories these days since the main modern audience either isn't a big fan of Christian media or just wants the kind of lame fundamentalist boomercore culture war shit that you get from Pureflix and the like.
You could probably do something interesting with angels but there is no way to do it that won't piss off people more than the demon stuff already does.
As overdone as it is demons are way easier to make cool and sexy.
>>
>>155419767
What's unfortunate is the creator CAN draw in a nicer style but chooses not to. The fan art this movie got made the designs more palatable.
>>155419814
It probably can be done but I think the average modern creator and viewer is so fucking brainwashed by demon content that they really can't fathom that the stereotypical good guys (angels) could be made cool. The problem with Boomer Christian media is that it's usually preachy shit and no atheist wants to sit and listen to Bible study. Prince of Egypt focused on telling a story first and will always be praised by believers and non believers alike. It had real heart and sincerity put into it, with a respect for what it was adapting because it's a religion with millions of adherents. But indie creatives like this and Viv really don't respect the shit they touch. Buddhism getting this treatment is shocking, I'm surprised no one started flinging racism accusations.

>We live in a fucking contrarian, irony poisoned media landscape.
I think there is no "soulfulness" or purpose to the society, it's all just a unfunny joke, and I think that's how the culture partially plays it out.
>There always has to be some kind of "deconstruction" on how problematic it is.
You can only deconstruct something up to a point, and then you're just pounding your fists in the dust. You can deconstruct an apple pie, and then come to a bunch of raw ingredients and then that's about the full stop of it. Not even attempting to look at the ingridents themselves. It's just being hyper critical of ideas, then breaking apart said ideas and that's about it. It falls under the destruction more than deconstruction, but perhaps that's it's point.
>Not sure if angel shit would even succeed in this climate
Hearing "angel" got me thinking about Neon Genesis Evangelion. That had some interesting implications about "God" and "Heaven" ther.
>>155419814
I think it could work, but it's gonna have to not be so on the nose with the "good guys". LOTR kind of hid it with Gandalf, and the Maiar (angels).
You see a similar story too in Narina, but that's a little more on the nose than LOTR.
It can work, but I think it's going to take a more skilled hand than these ham-fisters currently. Like >>155419884 said.
Boomer Christian media is that it's usually preachy shit ~~ Bible study.
>But indie creatives like this and Viv really don't respect the shit they touch.
I don't think they really had much to say to begin with, if they had anything to say at all.
>Buddhism getting this treatment is shocking
I think because most people don't know about Buddhism, hell I barely know, but that's because theology and spirituality interest me.
>>

*Typo:
>Boomer Christian media is that it's usually preachy shit ~~ Bible study.
I think that's another issue. Most Christian media is just some flavor of Bible Story/Bible Study. Like Veggie Tales or something of the sort. There is no branching out story telling rather than keeping it contained within the "true" canonical stories of scripture.
I think that's why LOTR and Narnia and some other novels shine through better at least having some shard of the Christian element. Rather than some over the top literal works like Legion.
I think there is more to explore in that direction most of all.
>>
>>155420001
Just concealing the angels in other good things would kind of defeat the point I think but we could use more stuff about good guys in general so I wouldn't mind.
Personally my favorite angel story as someone who isn't religious is easily Haibane Renmei. It is a great example of how the concept of an angel can be stretched while keeping a relatable human element.

Yeah, that's another good idea.
I think there is room for the genre/style to grow, and I hope that it does. I think there's a lot to say and explore in this area.
