When I was a kid reading the first six or so books, not only did I genuinely love all of them, and dedicate very real brainpower to thinking about how I would make sequels and original Wimpy Kid stories, but I was actually very interested in seeing how the series would change as it went along and how weird it would get.Obviously we expected the yearly sequels, but comic novels like this were a new idea in 2007 and we didn't necessarily think something like Diary Of A Wimpy Kid getting twenty whole sequels was even realistic to imagine, so it was like "Dude, Diary Of A Wimpy Kid 21? Can you imagine how CRAZY that would be? What is the cover going to look like? Will the font change? Will there be major shake-ups to the formatting? What will the story be about?".The only reason most guys my age stopped reading the books is because parents are violently repulsed by their sons reading stuff like Diary Of A Wimpy Kid, in no small part due to the fact that they don't shy away from skewering the abusive suburban family structure in addition to the egomaniacal geek protag. We've had twenty years of sharting over seasonal rot rhetoric from lazy Republican burnouts like OP with everything from The Simpsons to Rick & Morty, and it's gotten so bad that the victims of the books' opposition have had to come to bat for them to protect themselves from further degradation in the same way that some Sonic fans got conned into touting the Arin Hanson "Sonic needs to be like Mario" bullshit because they were afraid of getting their asses kicked for the same reasons.Read the books or shut up.

These books went to shit when they stopped being grounded, Hard Luck was the last book to really feel like Diary of a Wimpy Kid consistently, from the Long Haul onwards the books gradually became more nonsensical.Honestly they should’ve aged up Greg rather than doing that Simpsons thing where the characters don’t age, a high school aged Greg sounds ripe for comedy.
I remember my favorite Wimpy Kid book of the ones I read being The Last Straw, because it felt the most engaging with a story that had a Ferris-Bueller-like hook and satisfying ending in addition to all the art and comedy. No idea what the fan favorite is nowadays.

The books are actually a little watered down from the original webcomic. The webcomic is slightly more mean spirited. There's a part in the webcomic where they catch their teenage babysitter smoking and use it to blackmail her into letting them stay up later.

What made them so funny was how every stupid act done in the book was something that could happen in real life. I feel like each book before the Long Haul had one or two unrealistically outlandish things in them, like the cheese touch for example makes it hard for me to believe that a cheese would stay on the basketball court for like 9 months, even if nobody picked it up it would’ve been eaten by animal or destroyed by the elements, but shit like that wasn’t comparable to Manny building a goddamn house or steering an RV into a broken bridge gap. I also like how it’s implied in The Third Wheel that Greg is an unreliable narrator by saying how he remembers his life in the womb before he was born, if that was a recent book that would be portrayed as the way it actually happened.

It's been said elsewhere but it's clear that The Long Haul was the turning point in which Kinney stopped drawing upon random shit that happened around him when he was a kid and just starting making shit up. We obviously can't ever know what he was drawing upon, but "a piece of moldy cheese ended up on the playground and someone touched it and they turned into a whole game called the cheese touch" is wacky, but also hyper-specific in a way that makes it amusing because you think "oh, kids at my school do stupid shit like that too". It's wacky, but there's a je ne sais quoi to it where you can quietly detect the fact that Kinney came up with it because it was funny, not because something like that happened to him or someone he knew.I stopped reading the series by the one with the tropical vacation, but even little old me could tell that The Long Haul was a turning point.

The later Tarzan and John Carter books are probably the best example of this. Also IMO Cabin Fever was much better than The Ugly Truth so idk why it isn't rated higher.
