Should male superheroes have facial hair? Like at least a trimmed beard instead of the clean shave.
>>

I feel like street-level anti-heroes like Batman, Daredevil and Punisher should have a little stubble that suggests they're so busy with their crusade against crime they don't always have time to shave.

I think few artists entertain that idea because drawing the beard is just added work even though it can look badass and menacing
It's also only used in western media to imply that the character is either old or hopelessly depressed.
>>
>>155416368
Depends on their lifestyle, Aquaman, Ollie and Roy have it on display but it could be argued they don't have to worry about maintaining cover for one reason or another.

Tony is an example where his Iron Man design means he can sport as little or much as he likes, and has.
>>
No, superheroes should be role models and that means not looking like hobos.
>>
if they are truly handsome with an intact head of hair they should not grow a beard unless they are having some kind of trauma arc

Ok I don't want to go there but as an ESL who only grow up watching cartoons, I kinda forgot that teens have facial hair too, especially 14 years old.
I'm not talking about the mustache but rather the side burns goatee that start to become visible
This lasted for longer than I would like to admit.

I do like beards as a sign of character type/personality.

A big bushy one can be a sign that a character is depressed or can make them seem sagacious.

A little stubble can make them look edgy and/or roguish

A meticulously groomed goatee can make them look vain, wealthy and/or stylish

It's something that kind of got overlooked back when a lot of characters were made because of how whitebread everything was, but I see it creeping into comics more and more now. Personally, I like Reed Richards with a full beard more than clean-shaven Reed, and Batman/Daredevil/Punisher with a little stubble really works. Thor also works better with a beard than without, imo.

I don't get to use this one that often
Remember boys safety razors and a trimmer are your best friends every 48 hours

I think Ollie is the only one who has it as part of his design which begs the question, how has no villain in star city connected the dots.

Quite the quandary, sir, but if I may dare to assume, I would say that this is cartoons and comics.

Sure.

>Should male superheroes have facial hair?
Only when they're going through a crisis.
>>
>>155416368
1000%. and villains as well
Ra's al Ghul already has the beginnings of what could be a hilariously on-point Bat-symbol-shaped goatee (with the head as the soul patch) just to drive in how hard and how badly he wants Bat-grandchildren.
It's just unfortunate that superheroes started up while still in the couple-decades-long wake of the bizarre and baffling return to roman homosexual beauty standards, starting in the WWI trenches (where you kinda had to shave everything or get lice). That whole "hair is dirty" concept, which ended up selling a billion cosmetic products, when in fact, it's the cleanest thing on your body (since nothing wants it. nothing eats it and poops)
>>155416626
It's okay, culture's really weird.

That is the other issue. They have to be normal in the setting, commonplace. Otherwise it doesn't work
costumed heroes with secret identities and barely-covering masks were invented at a time when ultra-uniformity was the name of the game. Every man wore the same white face, had the same suit and fedora and overcoat just in slightly different colors. even wavy hair was seen as something shameful. If that weren't the case, domino masks wouldn't have been so effective.
That of course is literally the point of beards and hair, to be a distinctive male that stands out from the others, so the female can select you. but yeah, for a secret identity? you are fucked. I've often wondered how I'd pull it off in real life / a more grounded setting, and the conclusion I keep coming back to is 'hooded cloak (or at least the shoulders-up kinda cloak) and face scarf / bandana' because aint no way it's working otherwise.

he's got weird sideburns, I'd say they're halfway between sideburns and the Ra's al Ghul goatee-corners (which is how my beard grew in from the start. those corners, then they spread to the middle and then upward)
which is appropriate for a demon who's trying to look kinda unique, and not just have the standard pointy devil goatee.. the antler-crown is part of that too. very cool design. He looks roughly like that in the comics, too, right?

How would a bebeardened Clark Kent style his beard differently so he looks like a meek dork in a suit? Muss it up? Kinda bird-nest-y? then quickly spitcurl it for supermode? Or would he just wear the exact same beard, and everyone sees it and goes "look at this guy, he thinks he's fucking superman with that beard"
>>
>>155416368
Well female ones sure as hell shouldn't
>>155416509
Wow, this actually kinda looks like kevin conroy. maybe this kind of cowl would have suited his enormous noggin.. in a better timeline..
wait wai twait, am I seeing a little... chin strap on this cowl? But like, the beard is going over it? or it happens to have the same texture.. I'm very confused. there's also what seems to be like bolts or rivets in the sideburns of the cowl, connected to god knows what (can he open his jaw?) and some kind of either Homer Simpson sideburns or... straight up payot, next to that.

beards are for faggots, only anchor beards should used (and only for specific men)

I'm laughing at you right now, let me guess. You spend as much time in front of a mirror as a woman in the morning?
Watch the chin lil bro, that Adam apple sure is a pain to work around
>>
>>155416368
Facial hair is how people cope with a weak chin. To be a superhero you need a strong chin and a beard hides that

I would agree from a design standpoint but you can at least have a bit of stubble
You're telling me the utility belt has an electric razor just for batman to use it every 12 hours?
>>
>>155423576
I see your point, but also part of me is like "shark repellant" kek if he has shark repellent he probably has a batrazor and bat shaving cream kek. But stubble is kinda cool. Though mostly I think from a direction standpoint they keep them clean shaven so you get that trope of "you can tell a long time passed because he has facial hair now!"
