Okay but why DIDN'T it reference post-9/11 paranoia?
because a 13 year old girl selling her "panda" for money is more important
>>155424272Because nobody outside America gave a shit once a couple of weeks had passed. Probably nobody outside of New York did.
>>155424272Because it’s in Canada
>>155424272Mr enter autism aside, nothing about this movie had anything related to 2000s culture, characters acted and talked like modern zoomers, i sincerely thought the story took place in present times.
I love how everyone went from glazing this movie for no reason, to making 9/11 jokes because of some autistic cartoon reviewer, that will forever be the legacy of Turning Red.
>>155424328Toronto is literally a lake away from New York.
Honest question, how would you address 9/11 in the movie?
>>155424272Why would it? Its about period blood
>>155424511She had a tamagotchi and was obsessed with a backstreet boys/nsynch boy band facsimile, I grew up at the same time that character did and it read really sincere to me.
>>155424272>One of the characters is a lesbo at the end>They all didn't immediately beat her ass and ruin her lifeAnd this was supposed to be realistic how?
>>155424604*Upstate* New York, which might as well be the fucking Moon as far as geopolitics goes
>>155424619The school security guard with the big ass turban wouldn't be working there.
>>155424619I'd have set it in new york and had a giant cloud of smoke and debris be in the periphery of every shot.
>>155424745It is the closest Canadian metropolitan area to New York City. And let's not be retarded and show we were born after 9/11 by saying Canada and the US weren't both effected by 9/11.
>>155424272It took place in Canada. Leafs were dancing in the street and burning American flags on 9/12.
>>155424272Because it wasn't about white people, and Canada in general didn't care about 9/11. Get over it.
>>155424272it was in Canada, otherwise there wouldn't be a habibi around
>>155424416Isn't Canada in the northeast, putting it nearby?
>>155426057Every western country at the time was profoundly impacted by the 9/11 attacks, anyone alive at the time could atest to that fact.
>>155424328Probably this. Country that wasnt canada fucked around and found out.
>>155424272this entire movie makes me mad. its style character designs dialogue etc..
>>155424272Well there is a Canadian musical about 9/11 but that's because American planes had to stop in some town instead of going back
Zoomer thread, any movie set explicitly in the aftermath of 9/11 should have it referenced in some way unless they deliberately are admitting they picked the date arbitrarily. Considering the movie has a Twilight book parody, which wouldn’t be a thing for many more years, that seems to be the case. Especially especially since so much of the movie is about immigration and adjusting to different cultural prejudices. It’s retarded to set it right after 9/11 and pretend it doesn’t exist. Have one of the Muslim students they’re so proud of showing off take off her hijab when she arrives at school because she doesn’t want to get bullied, or alternatively have Mei defend her against teasing. Old Pixar 100% would’ve had the girls attend an auditorium with a counselor speaking, or walk past a mural some classroom had to make about the victims. Disney built a reputation around stories with dead parents. Half the Studio Ghibli films this studio idolizes are about or reference WWII. Pixar films used to explicitly be set in timeless worlds not mentioning real historical events, but that doesn’t mean they present a world that rings false. When The Incredibles and Up had flashback scenes, there was window dressing that placed it in the real world, like the supers crackdown feeling reminiscent of McCarthy hearings and Muntz being a Lindbergh stand-in being filmed in movie serials. Turning Red could’ve been set in 2000 and nothing would have to be changed, but they set it after 9/11 instead, presumably because that matched up with the director’s actual childhood age bracket and she was too autistic to be flexible. Then again, maybe they did plan to have a WTC poster and Disney denied it because we all know they’re pure scum with frighteningly soulless priorities. If you disagree with any of this you’re fucking retarded. Kill yourselves.
