Gorillas were largely thought of as mythological creatures until the late 19th century, when Europeans began traveling to Africa to conquer and colonize it (look up "the Scramble for Africa"). Explorers would return and bring back stories about their experiences and these sensationalized accounts of gorillas being these large, violent animals that would lurk in jungles, kidnap and eat people. These stories would inspire a ton of adventure novels and films about Africa, jungle exploration and large apes, the most influential ones being Tarzan and King Kong. People were fascinated by the fact gorillas were like a bridge between man and beast, and this fascination lasted until the 1960s.

We've had this thread many times before. They included primates on comics because they caught the eye more in comic shops which lead to higher sales numbers. Those sales numbers were so significantly higher that it became good business to have a big monkey man on your front cover, so it became widespread.Same reason you see so many other outlandish front covers. Such as ones where Superman is doing something crazy or evil. It's the original clickbait.

Even now Joe Rogan contemplates about gorillas fighting things. Even if they themselves aren't actually that strong as animals, they look like massive hulks of muscle and aggression while also being somewhat funny looking and expressive. Hell Planet of the Apes manages to still do well in theaters. The King Kong movies do better than Godzilla solo and teaming them up has just made the box office go up.
