overall 6-7/10, decent movie, but underperformed according to expectations.

There hasn't been a good live action Superman film since Reeves. Everything is irony-poisoned now and the themes that Superman best exemplifies no longer resonate with the audience of today so any attempts to make a new film have to try and find a 'new angle' or interpretation which will never work.

F4 is in a similar space (as is James Bond) where the world is just too far removed from the one in which they need to exist to be good.

That's a interesting perspective, I agree, even the idea of Truth, Justice, and the American Way is offensive to modern sensibilities.

Solidly good and sort of a best case scenario for a tentpole Superman film to appeal to the broadest demos. Not my ideal, but better than most capeshit. Cons are just the humor not hitting and going too far at points really. Maybe his endorsing their killing that big alien if they had to. Otherwise the heart, action and characterization was solid. I like that it's a colorful, lived in world the most.

I thought it was the opposite extreme of Snyders. And I'm real sick of seeing retards claim things are Punk Rock.

Interesting that you brought up the F4 because it's in a similar position to Star Trek/Bond/Superman.

It's not that people don't want science adventures, spy fiction, or super-heroes, it's that the inevitable peaks of the tone/subject matter/themes belonging to these IPs aren't currently "in" when it comes to the cultural zeitgeist, and the creative forces behind said IPs are reluctant to catch up for whatever reason, even when they would stand to benefit from it. At a certain point, an IP must reset and effectively start over with the original vibes left intact. If it keeps going or becomes too reactionary in an inorganic way, it loses touch with the zeitgeist.

Ex: James Bond got BTFO by media made in reaction to the IP: Austin Powers, Metal Gear, and all of the schlocky spy movies of the 90s/2000s that embraced the batshit insanity of the genre. Meanwhile, Bond got insecure of being goofy and pivoted towards post-9/11 hyper-realism, despite the ridiculousness being a key facet of the genre.

People want Superman for the same underlying reasons "Evil Superman" was such a big thing for a decade. Superman needed to be rebellious, emotional, and angry again, so it's no surprise that Absolute Superman became such a hit by basically being an updated Golden Age Supes.

F4 is a rather intriguing case because fundamentally, the comic is "Doc Savage meets Star Trek"...(note that DS was an inspiration on Superman!) Just like with James Bond, Star Trek got too fixated on being dark/edgy/realistic and losing touch with the silly and emotional-philosophical aspects of the genre.

And we saw the same thing happen with Josh Trank's Fantastic 4 movie.

First Steps and Gunnman struggled because they're too reactionary to the fuckups rather than fully embrace the roots of the source material. First Steps should have been The Orville meets Star Trek Beyond, while Gunnman should have pulled more from Golden Age Supes and his various re-interpretations in the comics.
