What kind of retard actually spends 1000s of hours reading superhero comic books? Are you growing as a person by reading batman issue 911: Joker rapes the whole of gotham and batman punches him?

How could they even do anything new or interesting with a character that's almost 100 years old? Or the superhero archetype itself, has been beaten to death in every media, especially in comic books.

I don't want to be that guy, but you could put down the monthly CIA superhero propaganda issue and try reading Crime and Punishment, or learning about history, culture, geography, any topic that interests you outside of infantile stories for adult children. Hell, even if you want to read comics, you can read something that's written by a single author and has a beginning, middle and end that was decided to fit the story he wanted to tell, not some shit designed by a committee to go on until the end of times and make as much money as possible from losers who don't have children so they spend their money on comic books.
Its telling all the great comic book writers agree that superheroes are the stain on a otherwise great media.

I like the comics medium, and unfortunately a huge percentage of comics are concerned with superheroes. Moore's are good, but he honestly made the problem worse by making people think that there were many still stories to squeeze out of the genre. He now regrets it like a motherfucker.

For anyone actually interested in his argument, it's that the mass popularity of superhero movies indicates a desire for "simpler times, simpler realities" and that that desire can be a precursor to fascism, not that superhero media itself leads to fascism
>>
The problem is that while the logic Moore uses to show the link is sound, he's being deliberately obtuse.

Pretty much any "good vs evil" story in which good eradicates evil by force can be used. And tons of protagonists fit that whole "strongman who takes it all into his own hands" narrative regardless.

For instance, Sherlock Holmes is fundamentally the same thing. He's a private contractor whose whole schtick is routinely being smarter and better than those useless cops at Scotland Yard. (see: Boring government officials bogged down by boring rules and red tape and a lack of creativity)

It's not about the genre. It's about what fascism is. Go back to Nazi Germany and look at a lot of the propaganda and it's generic stuff about moral duty, standing up for your family/your people/your community, and ensuring what Germany at the time had deemed the moral right wins by any means necessary.

Fascism (or honestly, authoritarianism, fascism just indicates a nationalist spin) is essentially wanting to see someone, criminal or foreign enemy, get beaten to a pulp so badly that we ignore who we gave the power to do it.

It's also why fascism feels like such a meaningless word. Because basically any authoritarian government at this point in history is gonna gun for a nationalist spin to consolidate further social control. Even the Soviets did that shit very shortly after supposedly denouncing nationalism.
>>
It's amazing how Alan Moore has basically spent the last 15 years telling everyone who will listen that he hates everything he's ever created.

I feel like Alan Moore's secret dream is to just go from house to house, knocking on people's doors and telling each of them individually that Watchmen sucks.

>>155519024
What's good about it because here's where it gets iffy.

Fascism is going to manifest extremely differently depending on the cultures it manifests in.
Notice that Mussolini did not give a flying fuck about the Jews and had a jewish mistress until Hitler told him to make the Italians hate the Jews.

A good example here is what North Korea keeps doing every time they do some LARP about Mount Paektu or imply some mystic element to the Kim bloodline that ties to the mythical kingdom of Joseon.

For instance, let's assume a fully fascist America. You think celebrities yapping about politics are bad now. A fascist America would beam pride of superior American film industry and glorious Hollywood history and we'd have a giant fucking propaganda parade of them every year full hunger games style that you'd be actively judged for not tuning into.

And before anyone cracks about already putting up with that in June, I'm talking about a Macy's Thanksgiving Day sized parade of media whores, massive red carpet. Basically, the Oscars but we're all soft forced into watching and legally aren't allowed to say anything bad about it that could undermine public morale
>>
>>155517886
What kind of retard dedicates his life to making comics? Are you making anything worthwhile? Do you think you’re telling some important story or doling out wisdom? You’re making shit for children. Even the most edgy comics are only considered especially edgy because comics are considered a medium for children so in the mind of the average person murder and gore are worse in them than say a movie. And what’s worse is when someone tries to “subvert” shit to make some kind of statement. “Oh what if Superman was le evil” newsflash DC has been doing that for decades, adding in some pretentious philosophical bullshit or swearing isn’t going to prevent it from being hackneyed trash.
>>
>>155517886
alan moore is a hack and no one should ever take him seriously as he is a shut in with no real world experience other than writing for comic books. that said, a broken clock is right twice a day, and obsession over superheroes is infantile. its one thing to like them, have some knowledge, keep up with whatever new media comes out, but obsessing over it to the point it consumes your life is just pathetic.
>>
>>155519216
Let me put it this way.

In Nazi germany, cut supply lines meant you couldn't get coffee. They supplemented this with shitty acorn coffee. Everyone had to pretend the acorn coffee wasn't shit so as to not undermine public morale.

That will always be the big final part of fascism or any authoritarian ideology. Something about social stability or public morale as a potential charge for extremely minor shit. And you never know what that shit is going to be

It helps to remind everyone that the people taking in and aiding the masses of migrants are the same people funding, aiding, abetting, bombing , etc the countries those migrants come from to the point the US shamelessly arms and trains mexican cartels and is purposefully causing a famine in india.

>and obsession over superheroes is infantile
So Moore is infantile then? I mean when you work so hard to write an entire thing to attempt to dress down the idea of the superhero then what does that say about you? I mean you can call someone a manchild being a Batman super fan and buying every bit of merch, but the same can apply to someone who spends all their time seething about Batman and looks for ways to complain about the character. I mean the “Batman’s a fascist” crowd are full of those people. And the general sentiment of people who obsess of superheroes in the negative is that they don’t understand the role that they play in the modern consciousness and culture. They’re basically the modern equivalent to heroes of legend. Figures like Hercules or Gilgamesh. And don’t get me wrong, I do agree that some guy having a wall of merch and other shit and constantly shilling his favorite hero for free is pretty gay, but the people who do the opposite like make essays, videos, or comics/animations of their own just to shit on a hero/the idea of heroes are just another side of an autistic coin.
>>
>>155519304
I was more trying to call out the sentiment of someone bitching about superfans when they are in just as deep if not deeper than them. I’ll be honest I don’t think that comics as a medium is inherently for children but I think the people who get up their own ass about superheroes, whether they be fans, writers, artists, editors, etc. just end up losing track of what matters. I don’t want to hear from the guy who made “Super Cock and the Hen” say that he hates the people who obsess over the medium when he has made his own edgy version of it that has a character called Uber Rooster die of a heroin overdose and The Chicken end up whoring herself out to pay the bills on their secret lair. All that it is the same kind of gimmicky shit they complain about in regular comics but I’m targeted toward edgelords.

“Critics who treat 'adult' as a term of approval, instead of as a merely descriptive term, cannot be adult themselves. To be concerned
about being grown up, to admire the grown up because it is grown up, to blush at the suspicion of being childish; these things are the
marks of childhood and adolescence. And in childhood and adolescence they are, in moderation, healthy symptoms. Young things
ought to want to grow. But to carry on into middle life or even into early manhood this concern about being adult is a mark of really
arrested development. When I was ten, I read fairy tales in secret and would have been ashamed if I had been found doing so. Now that
I am fifty I read them openly. When I became a man I put away childish things, including the fear of childishness and the desire to be very
grown up.”

I don't read superhero comics anymore. My eyesight is so bad that I can't even read the text bubbles. I do recognize the important of superheros for American culture. I just don't see a need to read them anymore.

I'm much more interested in graphical memoirs these days. They are much more interesting. Why read New York City from Spiderman's point of view when I can instead read it fro Julia Wertz's point of view? These graphical memoirs tell very personal stories and I find a lot more pleasure reading them than superheroes or manga. Moore's been inconsistent about this, he attacks whoever he's mad at that day.
>At his inception, Superman seems very much a representative of the downtrodden working classes his creators hailed from, and a wonderful embodiment of all the dreams and aspirations of the powerless. Dressed in bright primaries where most of his Depression-era readers were confined to threadbare black, or brown or grey, here was a character that in a single bound could leap above the worn-out city streets which his impoverished countrymen were forced to trudge in search of work. While the ensuing decades and expanding fortunes of America have seen Siegel and Shuster's purloined champion recast as an establishment ideal, a figure that embodies tactical superiority and thus perhaps a sense of national impunity, the archetypal superhero at his outset was a very different proposition. In his earliest adventures, with an admirably broadminded definition of what constituted criminality, a splendidly egalitarian Man of Tomorrow would rough up strike-breakers and use his super-strength to hurl unscrupulous slum landlords over the horizon. Gradually across the next few years, perhaps in keeping with the Cleveland pair's decreasing power to control their own creation, Superman would undergo a moral and political makeover to become a bastion of authority, carefully trimmed of any prickly or non-conformist attitudes.

How do you read it as worse? Besides the impending MAD(which would naturally also be a risk for the USSR as well), NYC doesn't seem much worse than actual 70's/80's era NYC. There's electric cars so the energy crisis of the late 70's was probably less of an issue, genetic engineering in food implying no food shortages(genetic engineered food is another can of worms, sure, but the four legged chickens are meant to be a bonus.
Even the gang violence isn't any worse than a Daredevil comic or something.

You're asking the wrong people, nobody on this board has spent even 30 minutes reading comics

Gay sex, feminism, CRT, trannies. Well those things could be precursors just not in the way you would think.

It's the practical example that not every technological advancement is better than the predecessor.

I just like reading comics, dammit. I like watching action films. I finish my shitty, soul grinding job, and I sometimes want to shut off for an hour or so. I want to read something fantastical, and spectacular. I admire the art, and I use it to improve my own art. This woe-is-me faggot devoted his life to comics, got rich off it, and wish he did something with more impact in the world. Cry me a river. Why is absolutely everything a political statement now? The modern western world is mind broken.

>its supposed to be a scathing commentary on Thacherism and right wing politics
Funny how the people who least understand something always believe they have written a scathing critique of something
Like how the movie starship troopers is supposed to be showing how bad facism is
>a society where even the second class citizens live in spacious beachfront property of Beunos Aires
>that the streets are clean and free of homeless and fent zombies
>that you only get to vote after military service and most people dont actually care enough about voting to do that
>that the society is more technologically advanced than our own
Oh boy, that world sure looks bad
>oh no they executed protester/terrorists
>oh man, i really hope the 'democracies' of the real world would never do that

Alan Moore is a hack who is still mad that his dad told him to clean his room as a teenager. Watchman supports right wing policies massively because everyone would agree that preventing global nuclear war, sorry I mean alien space squid invasion, is a good thing and if we nuked DC and Moscow you'd have millions of people cheering and you could have done that anytime in the last 20 years and gotten that result.

Alan Moore is proof of Death of the Author, he thinks he wrote his story one way and that everyone else is wrong for all coming to the same conclusions about his work and he doesnt even have the mental capacity to consider he messed up his own story

>super'hero' uses his power to enforce his beliefs on a society that hes not a part of
>sorry blacks your gangs are wrong, i will use my godlike powers to beat you up and throw you in jail
I would LOVE if a comic writer had the balls to make a superhero who fights crime but makes the other members of the Justice League uncomfortable because they only stoo black crime
>i stopped a gang of drug dealers, i didnt make them all black
>oh so im supposed to not arrest the carjackers because of the color of their skin?

Because the alternative is all superheroes know this and its just a quietly accepted fact that they'll arrest a lot more minorities than they will white people for non-super villain related crimes
>>
>>155529533
Well V for Vendetta was that and it didn't make its society look like a place worth living in. Moore messed up by not understanding what kind of people Thatcher and the tories were, projecting the worst on them.

I'm so glad people like Warren Spector haven't come this vocally pretentious over how people utilize Deus Ex screeching "NOOOO ITS ABOUT PAST EVENT THAT NOBODY CARES ABOUT ANYMORE AND TO FOCUS ON THAT!!!!"

This woe-is-me faggot wrote the most entertaining comics you're likely to read.

I feel like this has happened at some point. It rings a bell. The obvious one is Elite from Punisher but I know there’s something else too.
>>
>>155530325
That's a medieval proverb, not an ancient one. More roads led to Byzantium than they did to Rome since Rome's primary source of commerce was through shipping ports.

because Moore said so

He did. I do enjoy his stories and he had his role in making them so popular. Now he just seems bitter about the fact that his biggest contribution to society was 'just' entertaining people instead of making some divine art. reminds me of alec guinness and harrison ford. I'm not THAT into comics or films, but me enjoying spiderman and looking forward to doomsday or whatever the fuck isnt gonna make me into a nazi. its just a statement of someone trying to stay relevant in this hyperpolitical culture we live in
