>>155525394The costumes she has, including the one she made a worse version of Julia's old one, all look as ugly as sin. And her powers aren't very interesting. So any visual interest whether costume or action-wise are boring. Combine that with the stock personality she has, then I don't give a damn about the character. She just rang as a hollow version of Mayday. Where one's spunk and determination actually had things to bounce off of, the other just devolves into shallow "witty" writing. Mayday has some of those traits and shares them. But I think the actual ramifications and decisions made by the character make up for perhaps the same stock spunky girl who is determined. I dunno I'm sometimes bad about spouting opinions on shit I haven't read in a while but that's how I remember it.
I can't say I like her and it sounds like the behind the scenes was bad intent actions they got cold feet about, but from the storytimes of comics she was in, they cut everything unique out of her. I don't think there is a point to her now. Also I get why people think she's a lesbian. Her relationships with other girls consistently felt more important and personal while boys were just kind of there and not fleshed out.

I suppose it's because DeFalco's book made them look bad as he and Frenz were largely independent from their control due to their seniority and the fact DeFalco was a former EiC who also has a backbone if you've seen the guy in interviews and his background. This is further evidenced by mayday's book almost getting cancelled due to largely editorial, not sales, and how Slott is a backstabber specifically towards DeFalco who hired him accidentally due to thinking he was older than he was. Slott has done a lot of bad shit to Mayday and also made Annie-May as well. Slott is Mr. Company man, Quesadilla dick-cheese gobbler himself alongside Brevoort and Lowe.

But if you look and read how Slott handled Mayday during Spider-Verse, the convenience of RYV being made by Slott in a year or two, and the fact that DeFalco hired him but DeFalco basically expresses the opposite values on everything around MJ and Spider-Man and comics in contrast to Slott, then it isn't hard to imagine Slott not liking him and using his spite writing to diminish them.

She's half-Puerto Rican because McKeever, I think it was, had her say she was Puerto Rican and an editor didn't bother to correct that prior to print. But even going back to her original series it started out implying that she was Mexican-American, then it turned out she was from Mexico which was then turned into having been born in NYC but raised in Mexico until her mother died/disappeared at which point she moved back to NYC. And that shit was all under the same writer mind you because it's very clear when you read the Amazing Fantasy arc and subsequent ongoing that Avery had zero idea what she was doing and was making everything up as she went.
