Nah, also I get the same burst of 90's nostalgia from it I do re-reading video game magazines from the 90's, it captures the zeitgeist of 90's culture that becomes a distant memory. I'm practically standing in a Toys R Us in 1995 again looking at all the Toy Biz X-Men and Spider-Man toys, and picking up the Fleer Ultra Marvel cards as I flip through a mid-90's Wizard Magazine. It started to suck ass when it shifted more to movie coverage in the 00's, so it deserved to die then.

Spiderman made comics about deep complex character writing instead of good guys punching bad guys

I don't give a fuck about Peter's girlfriend getting thrown off a bridge, I want to see him catch bank robbers

He's talking about Wizard Magazine, not Spider-Man, dingus.

Wizard basically used it's platform to push guys like Bendis and for the cinema..ization of comics.
>>
>>155605646
That was later on, and that was the angle Marvel under Joe Quesada wanted them to push if Wizard wanted to continue getting exclusive coverage and interviews.

The sin of wizard was pushing a bunch of really mediocre image shovel- and vaporware during the early to mid 90s. And even that wasn't so great a sin because a young me, who didn't have Internet access until fairly late in the game, could jack off to a lot of that content. The entire top cow line was essentially soft core pornography.

As a young kid who lived in the middle of nowhere and did not have reliable access to comics, wizard was fucking incredible.

One of my earliest faps was to Witchblade, Fathom and Red Monika from Battle Chasers. Deep nostalgia faps right there.

Probably if it came out in 2017, or even late 2016..

I wanna say I had the Fathom #1/2 that was essentially my version of the victoria secret catalog.

Wasn't Wizard sort of responsible for the massive speculator boom that happened in the early 90s? When every single comic numbered 25 or 50, and every first appearance of anything no matter how mundane was horded up by collectors?

It was the 90s version of 2020s pokemon card scalper boom.

I recall Darkhawk and Sleepwalker #1 were always kept safely tucked away by so many comic shops in the 90s because it was a sacred first issue. Everyone knew those would be super valuable some day.

Spawn at least had some huge levels of popularity so it made some sense that so many collectors thought they were sitting on a retirement gold mine. But 90s collectors were so fucked up that any 5th rate book that had a 1 attached to it was bought up.

No, but it led, to a degree, to Wizard's popularity, because it was a price guide but also had actual content.

The speculator boom was actually caused, to a degree, a similar sports card boom, and a bunch of very old comics going for really insane prices at auction, one of the big ones being a copy of action comics #1 going for some stupid price.

People were like "oh wait these things are worth money!?" And publishers, who weren't doing so hot, leaned into that with the gimmicks and covers and chromium and shit. I'd say the peak was Death of Superman, which had people legitimately thinking it was gonna be worth a billion dollars some day despite everyone buying like 12 copies of the fucking thing.

>The speculator boom was actually caused, to a degree, a similar sports card boom,

Yeah what happened was a lot of the people who were speculating on cards, also jumped into comics. There's a reason why the 1981-1994 era of sports cards is referred to as the "junk wax" era. It should also be noted that Gareb Shamus, the guy who ran Wizard, ran a sports cards/comic shop with his family.

Then Wizard started publishing Inquest, with a Magic car price list at the back of every issue.
>>
Poisonous access media as well as being an echo chamber sounding board for a lot of the worst decisions of the Joe Q crew.
