Last time we read Transformers Generation 1 Vol I, the first Transformers comic published by Dreamwave. It was a best seller, and so company head Pat Lee decided to strike while the iron was hot and hire longtime Transformers writer Simon Furman to write a prequel series set on Cybertron, titled The War Within.

Transform and roll out.

Figured they would've given Soundwave his own unique speech bubble for some reason.

Seeing Don Figueroa go from fan comics to official work was awesome. Transformers might be the IP where fan artists had the highest chance to go official from previous fanwork they did alone. Even Josh Nizzi who worked on the movies started by doing fanart.

God, I love The War Within. Amazing art and story. Thanks for the storytimes, OP!

You know, with the three pipes, the rookie Prime storyline and this vehicule mode, did they intended for this Optimus to looks like Rodimus?

That's it for today. Come back next time where we finish the War Within saga (which ended faster than anyone thought it would).

Thank you. I didn't like the Dreamwave Gen1 volume, since neither the art nor the writing vibed to me. But I fuck with this one.

there goes a golden disk...

This is one of the most bad-ass pix of Optimus Prime ever drawn. ABSOLUTELY bad-ass!

Also, I feel this is Furman's best work; he was worse before this and worse afterwards, but this is the pinnacle of his writing and it really shines.

>>155612263
>Figured they would've given Soundwave his own unique speech bubble for some reason.
well, he did have one of the most distinct modes of speech in the old cartoon
>>
>>155614697
The thing is,Furman is like Larry Hama in that he sort of considers his work on the comic separate from the show and might not even consider the, having the same voices as the show when writing.
Grimlock is one exception since he made sure to keep the caveman speak but even then it's not as overt.
>>
>>155613245
possibly? Figueroa does use a lot of his concepts repeatedly and if you look at his Titanium Rodimus design it's also somewhat similar
>>
Thanks OP

thanks, op

If the anons in the last thread are right, being fan artists who didn't get hired is a big reason the guys at the TF Wiki hated Dreamwave so much.

>The thing is,Furman is like Larry Hama in that he sort of considers his work on the comic separate from the show and might not even consider the, having the same voices as the show when writing.
IIRC both admitted to not having watched much of the cartoons while they were writing the comics in the 80s and early 90s, and nor did Budiansky. But Furman did see the movie, and treated it as the canonical future of the Marvel UK comics he wrote, so it inspired his takes on most of the characters who debuted in it.

>But Furman did see the movie, and treated it as the canonical future of the Marvel UK comics he wrote, so it inspired his takes on most of the characters who debuted in it.
So this is why his Primus looked like Rodimus?
>>
>>155612184
kind of interesting seeing Prowl saying something like "listen to your heart"
>>
>>155611745
The Matrix Quest story at Marvel named the Autobot leader before Optimus as Sentinel Prime, and here The War Within introduces the idea that Sentinel gets killed by Megatron early in the war, something that's happened in various other things since.

This was M Sipher's riff on the Dreamwave style.
The sad thing is it's not that he isn't a decent artist, it's that he's close but still a far bridge away from the level of detail and polish Dreamwave bought in. Guys like Sipher and Walky probably wanted the style of Transformers comics to remain something like the G2 book(which is cool, don't get me wrong, but not as "mecha" as Dreamwave and early IDW). They could draw like that, kinda. They couldn't draw like Pat Lee, let alone Dan Khanna or Don Figueroa.

I forgot how much I disliked the art in this. The colors are just awful.c

And when Willis actually got to do something for the Collector's Club magazine, it was just making an AU version of Ravage into a lolcat joke. IIRC there are several IDW comics where Armada Hotshot gets killed because he was Willis' favorite and the TF Wiki crowd had not endeared themselves to the people working on the comics.

Apparently Dreamer Design isn't very good at what they do.
>>
>>155621533
oh yes I forgot that willis HATED Alex Milne's art for some reason. I guess because of his anime influence in the Dreamwave days? And then Milne works on the MTMTE book and becomes immensely popular with tF fans.
>>
>>155621533
>it was just making an AU version of Ravage into a lolcat joke.
God, that aged terrible after like, a month. Only Willis could come up with such a lame joke, and run it into the ground in a matter of days.
>>
>>155621405
what TF art do you like?
>>
>>155621365
>>155621365
>>155621365
since I feel like clowning on M "Gets in this D for MISB" Sipher more, here's an official image he drew for the club magazine.
This is official art for the club magazine.
It's amateur as fuck.
For someone who ripped on how Pat Lee drew vehicles, there's basically no real perspective here or care to any of the curves, it's really shaky and the tires are on different planes. Someone like DWJ who isn't really a tech guy can get away with non-technical drawing and some wonkiness because there's a consistency in it. This doesn't have that.
Look drawing minicons for a niche collector's club magazine isn't a big deal, but when you compare to what fanart other TF artists were doing on their own time for free..
>>
>>155624795
Depends. The problem here is mostly the coloring, though, not Figueroa.
>>
>>155624849
The car mode looks okay-ish, as long as you don't look at the wheels. But yeah, Dons art is in a whole other class.
