What was the most painful death?
After hearing people rant and rave about this back then, and having missed it but caught The Maxx, I was really looking forward to seeing this and seeing what all the hype is about. Artwork and animation is alright if you like that art style, and that's about it. The plot feels half-baked when it finally appears, everything about the series is style over substance. Things make little sense if any. But hey, look at that artwork/animation! Just ignore the sexualized snuff in the first 6 episodes, we assure you that's not the artist/writers poorly concealed fetish. The Maxx may have stopped before the plot finished, and failed to explain some key plot details that are spelled out in the comic, but it was still a far more rewarding watch than Aeon Flux. Even with all of Sam Keith's navel-gazing dialogue.

What tools or software did you use to put it all together?>Peter: Well, there was no software. Has any cosplayer ever tried to create an accurate Aeon outfit? Not just the fetish suit, but the hair as well.
In the '90s I randomly saw the god episode of this show and, not knowing anything about the show, mistook it for an ongoing storyline.
I enjoyed how on the episode commentary for “Chronophasia” Peter Chung admitted that he had no idea what the episode was actually about. It really is like a fever dream, which I guess is appropriate. However, I always thought the writer was trying in some way to tie the entire series together in a way that made sense, such as how Aeon dies and comes back. I think it was some kind of attempt at alternate timelines, Jacob’s Ladder type stuff. It didn’t really work because no one got it, but that’s my take on it, Aeon is exposed to something that gives her a view of time as it actually flows, in a benching, non-linear way.

i had the creator, peter chung as a teacher last semester. He is such a genius!! Æon Flux might seem plot-light, but every moment is carefully constructed to keep your attention. he prioritizes what the audience thinks, not the characters, if that makes sense.Sometimes he would bring up other students' films from other classes and critique them/eplain what they are doing wrong. I've always wondered what he said about my film in those classes. ah well.

he critiqued mine too. the biggest note for me was that i wasn't doing the hard part for conveying a character's choice. once character had to feel bad and toss a bandage to another (they are both bleeding to death)the gag at the end is that they toss it back and fouth like out of spite and pettiness.but that wouldn't land if the initial sacrifice felt arbitrary.Peter Chung said to give the dying man an incomplete task or have him see something unique and beautiful, like the gun bubbles from the Aeon Flux pilot.so getting the bandage guy and the audience invested for the same reason. sorry if this is long haha

I wonder if Chung would still do the loose to no continuity if he did a continuation of Aeon Flux. The non-shorts did sometimes reference past episodes and characters, but there were also ones where Aeon doesn’t escape a predicament and is back the next week. Part of me thinks Chung would try continuity this time but do something experimental like kill off Aeon and Trevor in the first episode and move on to other characters, like War but only shifting perspective once instead of multiple times.

Was this the American equivalent of animé?
>>155639211continuing.https://www.artofthetitle.com/title/aeon-flux>Let’s talk a bit about the visual inspirations behind Æon Flux. While some have tried to describe the show as ‘anime’, it’s perhaps more accurate to call it avant-garde; its aesthetic drawing inspiration from the paintings and drawings of Egon Schiele and Jean “Moebius” Giraud. How were you first introduced to their work, and why do you feel that it left such a profound impact on you?>Peter: It’s a combination of the cinematic approach to directing animation that we see in Japanese animation. I’ve always loved Japanese animation since I was a kid, but one thing that’s always bothered me about it was the design of the characters. And I always wished, well, if you could have this kind of cinematic animation storytelling without this horrible cutesy character designs, that was something I wanted to see. I was looking at a lot of Moebius at the time, I had actually gotten to know him and work with him on a project early in my career. I really admired and was inspired by him as an artist. What I love about his approach to comics and graphic illustration in general is that it has a clarity to it. The term in French for that is “ligne claire”, which means clear line. The main practitioner of that was Hergé, the creator of Tintin. It’s a style that’s very descriptive, and what that means is approaching the subject with a certain amount of graphic neutrality.
>>155664448No. Some inspiration sure, but it has more of a French sensibility if anything.
>>155664604>Peter: I think of images on film not as visual elements, but as an event unfolding in time. The reason I chose animation as a medium is that it’s about the orchestration of how you’re using time and the progression of an event as much as it is about the composition, graphically speaking. You’re composing using time. And in order to do that, I think it’s important not to emphasize one graphic element over another. When I’m talking about elements, I’m talking backgrounds, props, characters; all those things have equal importance in conveying an event. It’s not just the character. A lot of times what you see in comics and Japanese animation are attempts to provide atmosphere with light and shadow, and I think that’s the wrong way to go about the medium. Drawings don’t have any lighting, that’s fake; you’re just simulating a light source. So it kind of defeats the purpose to try and play that game. You can do it and do it beautifully, but I’m more interested in being descriptive and less about atmosphere. My favourite filmmakers are like that, they’re very lights-on like Hitchcock and Kubrick. My favourite film is Jacques Tati’s Playtime and that epitomizes that approach: lights-on, descriptive, and very neutral. You’re not trying to obscure something in shadow and contrive mystery. There’s already mystery in the event itself. My stories have ambiguity, so I don’t want them to be ambiguous portrayals of an ambiguous event, I want them to be as clear a portrayal of an ambiguous event as possible.
>>155664617>Peter: What’s funny is that, very often people ask me, “Well, why couldn’t you just come out and be more linear or be more explanatory about what’s going on?” And then, they would come back and say, “This is what I got out of it, but I’m not sure.” Very often they actually understood it perfectly, they just had a doubt that that was what I was intending to convey. So the problem wasn’t that the filmmaking, storytelling, or direction was obscure, it was that the idea itself was unconventional and they weren’t expecting to see that. It’s very important for me to communicate an idea clearly. I’m really not making films for myself, I’m making them for an audience. Despite what some might say, you can’t really make films for yourself. It doesn’t make any sense. I think if someone says that, and genuinely means it, they don’t understand the medium they’re working in. Because film is a medium of mass communication, that’s why it exists. I can understand if that if it were with paintings and drawing, but the purpose of film is to project an idea to an audience. The reason why all the principles of filmmaking exist is because of how they affect an audience, not because it provides pleasure to someone through the act of the creative process.

Can someone give a quick and dirty version of what the fuck Aeon Flux is about and it's lore that makes fucking sense without being hyper convoluted and vague as fuck?
Aeon Flux is the story of two people in a futuristic dystopian world. Originally conceived as a series of shorts that play out like a violent version of Spy vs Spy, with Aeon dying at the end of each short, it got picked up and turned into a series that lasted ten episodes. The series was infamous for it's lack of continuity or coherent lore. Some bits and pieces were established in a tie-in book but the book had a super low print run so hardly anyone read it. Combined with the bulk of it's revelations never appearing in the cartoon itself. While Aeon didn't die every episode, many an episode ended on a cliffhanger that never gets resolved/gets resolved off-screen. And one episode being so incoherent that Chung straight up said that fans can treat it as non-canon as they didn't know what the hell they were doing. Adding to this, when the show FINALLY got put out in full on DVD, the episides were divided up by director with Peter Chung's episodes on the first disc and co-director Howard Baker's episodes on episode two. To compensate, Chung admits that you can watch all but two episodes in any order you like: the only exception being Utopia or Deuteranopia (the first episode, created explicitly to appease MTV, who wanted a dialogue heavy episode to set up the premise/characters for viewers after the largely silent original first episode "The Demiurge" was rejected for being too confusing and aired later in the season instead, and End Sinister, which was the final aired episode of the show and gives a rather explicit end to the entire series. Problem with this, is that the writing for Trevor Goodchild is all over the place if UoD is the pilot, as most episodes of the series have Trevor not being President but working as a subordinate for the government, with Thanatophobia explicitly being written to set up Trevor going rogue and overthrowing the government in UoD
>>155709152The plot, which is never fully explained in the show, is that two city-states are at war. Bregna, which is where the show takes place in, is a giant dystopian city-state where a fascist government rules with an iron fist any has a border that has automatic security systems that maims anyone who tries to flee the place. It's rival is Monica, a city state we never outright see that is said to be a anarchist wonderland where everyone can do drugs, fuck whoever they want, and do whatever the fuck they want under the name of absolute freedom. As such the two city-states are in conflict, though the show has it be presented as a cold war type conflict with spies fighting for their country. Aeon is a Monican who is stationed in Bregna, running terrorist operations and sending back intel to her masters. The tie-in book reveal that by day she's a wealthy fetish model who does foot fetish photos for adult magazines, but this is only referenced in a blink and miss form in show during one of the shorts. She mostly spends her days trolling Trevor, who she is attracted to but finds him annoying with his obsession to make her a trade wife.
>>155621737Trevor did nothing wrong
>>155709276Trevor is a famous scientist who at some point becomes the leader of Bregna. Trevor is all over the place. Some episodes have him as a villain others as an anti-hero and others as a good person who does bad things for the greater good. Their rivalry is pretty much, Trevor does something involving super science that Aeon fucks up for her masters or because she's bored or to annoy Trevor. However, neither will kill each other because they both love each other but yet can't get together. Partly because of their different beliefs on the topic of order at any cost versus absolute freedom even if it means degeneracy, but also because Trevor wants Aeon to be a trade wife.
>>155622165>The Maxx may have stopped before the plot finished, and failed to explain some key plot details that are spelled out in the comic, but it was still a far more rewarding watch than Aeon Flux. >>155622165Been ages since I watched or read the Maxx, but IIRC the TV show did the western equivalent of "anime adaptation running out of manga source material to adapt and the producers knowing the show wasn't getting a second season, so they said fuck it and created an anime exclusive ending" thing and that fans preferred the cartoon ending over the comic ending, which is why the cartoon is so well loved and the comics just a forgotten footnote
