While I like the general art direction the comic went in, I do get a little nostalgic for the earlier versions of the Octopus Pie characters. I liked early Eve the most.

This reminded me, I finally finished reading the print edition of this the other day and I need to read the online extra chapters...
Fwiw, I also really dig the expressiveness of the later art style, but early eve is also really cute!

What'd you think? What were your general impressions of the comic?
>I need to read the online extra chapters
I like the first arc afterwards since I remember reading it when it came out and it was a pleasant surprise to see how all the characters grew. I do like the newest one though because Eve is just super horny all chapter.

>Fwiw, I also really dig the expressiveness of the later art style, but early eve is also really cute!
I feel the same. I like what the comic progresses into, but I like early Eve's cartoony and cynical nature. Reminds me a bit of Squidward. She's adorable in a different way to Hanna's goofy and over-the-top nature.

I really enjoyed it. I actually had some strips saved on my computer since I started reading it in 2022 (according to file details), but I think I heard about the physical box set coming out and ordered that, but I never got around to actually reading that until this month...

Anyway it made me smile a lot. I find Hanna really likable even at her worst because she's relatable in a way, and Eve radiates such ironic millennial webcomic self-insert vibes that I was surprised to find out Meredith Gran isn't actually asian. Generally the whole cast is great, and the only major character I didn't care for was Jane who ended up taking a lot of page time in the later half, she just felt really uninteresting and her relationship with Marigold was whatever. On the other hand, Marek and Hanna were such a powercouple that it really hit me when they split up, even if it was unavoidable.

Overall, I wish I had finished it sooner, but I also know I appreciated it more than I would have since I was still in college when I first started. Need to read more webcomics in general. thread theme? https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=lNV7C-kNUPo

Eve having this moment of weakness and wanting to fuck this guy was so funny. Like she hated the dude and he clearly isn't into her from the jump but they share one decent moment after watching Marigold make out with Sean and she's ready to go.
Also, how the hell is Eve so hot? She's a mess and a cynic but I would fold if she came onto me like that.

Kinda crazy to imagine, I can only wonder how the day ones will be reacting to this. I don't know what Gran has planned but it might be impacted since she apparently has lost her ability to physically draw. Hopefully she recovers soon.
Also, I realized, it's theoretically possible some ten year old zoomer could've found this comic when it came out in 2007 and followed it into their teens and 20s. Probably unlikely but still funny to imagine she's got OG Gen-Z fans.

I'm sure there are other reasons. Once she got a stable guy and a kid, her attitude changed.

I wonder why so many SOL comics are so hesitant to let their characters grow up or enter new true phases of their life. Like, your audience has likely changed after a certain point, whether in their own lives or in a new audience following along. Even ending the comic allows the opportunity for the artist to try new things. Gran was able to make two games. Bryan Lee O'Malley got to work on two new comics, even if he still dabbles in Scott Pilgrim content.

>she apparently has lost her ability to physically draw
Please elaborate. This is news to me. I had assumed she simply moved on to video game development.
>>
>>155639266
She dropped an update on her dev log discussing the challenge of it. Apparently it happened a little while ago.
https://meredithgran.com/dev-log-fall-2026
>I’m in the final stretch of pregnancy. My body has been blessedly mobile until recently, but some of the most demoralizing changes are almost old news by now.
>A few months back, I lost my ability to draw due to pregnancy-related carpal tunnel syndrome. This is a temporary impairment, but a hard one to accept when drawing has always been a part of my life, how I see the world, how I process things. It’s forced me to consider how I rely on drawing and what kind of things I can produce without it.
She'll probably be able to draw again, but I know it's probably inhibiting her game dev work since she is supposed to draw a comic for the game like she did for the first one. How this might impact the 20th anniversary of Octopus Pie in May, I'm not sure.

>I never got around to actually reading that until this month...Anyway it made me smile a lot.
Looks like it was worth it in the end! Glad it brought you joy!
>I find Hanna really likable even at her worst because she's relatable in a way
Do you relate in any specific way or is it sorta a general vibe she's got? I like Hanna but I relate a little more to Eve and Marek.
>I didn't care for was Jane who ended up taking a lot of page time in the later half, she just felt really uninteresting and her relationship with Marigold was whatever
I do like the relationship between them, but I do remember it kinda felt like it came out of nowhere when I first read it. Like, Marigold has been pretty straight all series and then a bad ending with Will and she's all onboard to fuck Jane who's sorta on and off as Eve's friend up to that point. Also, Jane seemed to not like Marigold very much until the chapter they kissed. I think if any of the OP characters are bound to divorce, I wouldn't be surprised if it were them.
>On the other hand, Marek and Hanna were such a powercouple that it really hit me when they split up
Part of me thought they would get back together following the series, but I don't mind that she ended up getting with Larry. They did have some tension before the series ended, and it seems like they're a good match despite how chaotic they are together.
>Need to read more webcomics in general.
I don't think I have any recommendations I think that come close to how the series made me feel, but have you played her games yet? I think they get pretty close, despite the main character being a little younger than Eve and Hanna.

>thread theme
I actually didn't even realize they were actually real until I read the commentary arc and realized it was all true and not some absurd Octopus Pie story Gran made up for the comic.

Yakza I've noticed is really intent on playing up the bunny aspect of Fionna, which is good for artistic reasons and horny reasons. Hopefully, more artists lean into that. It's not like the artists on the show have been subtle about it.
>pic
I like to think that Marshall is the one who occasionally fucks/fucked Fionna, in a low-stakes way for them to take care of each other and for Marshall to spend time away from his mom. Admittedly my own headcanon but they seem to have very low boundaries with each other and I can't see either of them having an issue with it.

Have not played the games but I am planning on getting around to them before long. I honestly can't help but think about andrew h*ssie and psycholonials which I finally got around to playing last year. I'm not sure how frequent it is that webcomic creators go on to make classic computer type games roughly 5 years after the end of their comic, but it's weird that it happened twice with two of the biggest ones I've read.
>I like Hanna but I relate a little more to Eve and Marek.
Marek is the me I want to be, Hanna and her angst hits me the same way Asuka did from NGE. My ability to relate to Eve is offset by how much I want to be with her

>My ability to relate to Eve is offset by how much I want to be with her
Truer words have never been spoken. Maybe I wouldn't call her my dream girl, but I'd be more than willing to be one of Eve's hookups before she finds her way to the arms of Will. Despite her cynical nature, she is a bit of a romantic and seems like a fun person to go on a date with. She even displays a bit of sex appeal from time to time.

>Hanna and her angst hits me the same way Asuka did from NGE
I can see that comparison. I also kinda want to see Hanna in a plugsuit. Hell, throw all the cast in NGE stuff. Greg could probably pull off a decent Shinji.

>I am planning on getting around to them before long.
Sweet! I hope you enjoy them. My one recommendation is to play the second game first and go back to the first game. However, if you are committed to playing the first Perfect Tides and then the second, it's worth using a guide to get the best ending. I think the second game has done a really good job of smoothing out and streamlining the kinks the first game has and you can get pretty much the full story of Mara in the second game without having played the first. The first game is still worth playing but it's definitely a first game for Gran.
>it's weird that it happened twice with two of the biggest ones I've read.
Haven't played Psycholonials yet. I can see the appeal of making the jump from comics to games. It can be another form of storytelling, especially if you're a comic artist who likes to break out of the traditional strip format.

I'd imagine most of the time, the "right conditions" for Eve would have to be when she's either a little drunk or a little horny (both is the perfect conditions). If the person is complimenting her in a way that makes her feel special and wanted, I think she'd be really open to it. Hell, she might even accept a foot rub for her tired feet after working at Olly's for the day, though she'd have to at least know/like the guy decently enough.

I can think up some other "right conditions" for the other characters later if the threads still up. I could easily think up stuff for Marigold.

My guesses for the main women of the comic:
>Eve: Hairy but will shave for a date or if a boyfriend expects her to
>Hanna: Hairy and unkempt, especially at the early part of the comic
>Marigold: Waxes that shit clean, especially after her stoner years
>Jane: Hairy but maintained
>Eve's mom: She forgot to shave one time on 9/11/2001 and she never forgot to shave after that

For the guys:
>Will: Hairy
>Larry: Shaved
>Marek: A legit jungle, it's hiding a few inches of his Polish sausage

Some more "right conditions":

>Marigold: Honestly, a younger Marigold might take the compliment pretty quick. In the minicomic where Hanna and Marigold meet, she's seen to really gravitate towards the affection and attention of men, especially older guys. If some older guy told her that she had cute feet, she might take that really well. The Marigold who's older would probably still take a compliment but maybe be more chill about it. Also, older Marigold might take the compliment from a woman as well.
>Jane: She probably seems the most difficult to have "right conditions" for, but the best case scenario is a hot woman complimenting them. Like, if a sexy black woman walked in the door and said she had beautiful feet, I think she'd pretty easily fold for that.
>Julie: She will only accept feet compliments from Jacob/Jackie. These compliments will never come though.
>America Jones: If you told her that Eve was the best at accepting compliments on her feet, she'd demand you compliment hers. She'd turn it into a whole competition that Eve would be unaware or uncaring about.
>Dawn Ning (Eve's mom): Probably hard to get the right conditions of, but you'd probably have to say something like "those are the cutest feet I've seen since September 11, 2001...I'll never forget them". Apparently she also was a big hippie way back in the day, so if you complimented her feet back then, she'd probably like that.
>Louise Pantry: She's already the pioneer of doing OF on MySpace, so she's probably the easiest. Saying her feet are cute might be enough, no true "right conditions" for her to take a compliment on her feet.

Honestly, there's a lot more characters than I remember so I'll have to think a little harder if there are any others.

The only reason I'm being such a stickler about the "a man and a baby made her attitude turn around" is because Gran is a better writer than that.

>>155663387

I think it was a really great way to frame the story, and I think I only really noticed it on my second time reading, not while it was coming out and OP was one of 100+ webcomics I was reading. I think when Gran was doing the commentary run; she probably pointed it out, hah.

I was rooting for them from the start, but also understood Eve's reservations about dating a drug dealer, no matter how great of a guy. Felt very realistic. How about you?

I need to get on playing PT: Station to Station; I've almost been putting it off because I don't want it to be over. I love Gran's writing so much.

>Gran is a better writer than that.
She is. Hopefully she wins more game awards this year. I think she already won for best narrative sometime earlier this year. I think if her next project gets a good amount of money, she can probably put out one of the best written works of the decade. She's already done a lot with pretty limited resources. I think she's finally hitting her stride as a game dev.

>I think it was a really great way to frame the story, and I think I only really noticed it on my second time reading
I noticed it initially, but I really didn't catch onto how much Hanna's life was about to change and everything leading up to it. Part of that is because I picked up the comic around the time when I was still in my late teens, so I really didn't see the signs at first of the trouble in Hanna and Marek's relationship nor Hanna's personal issues. I did like that Eve became something of Hanna's guide to navigating the dating world despite her being the shy, introverted, cynical nerd at the beginning of the series. It really emphasized her growth. The bonus commentary we got later on was a nice touch, it made following the webcomic again really nice.

>OP was one of 100+ webcomics I was reading
What else were you reading at the time? How does OP rank against them? Do you end up coming back to those as much as OP or is Gran's comic the one that stuck?

Had to split it up into two comments...anyway

>I was rooting for them from the start, but also understood Eve's reservations about dating a drug dealer, no matter how great of a guy.
I also was rooting for them from when I first started the comic, but since I was a lot younger, I didn't really get why Eve would've been opposed to dating a guy she thought was hot, had chemistry with, and had sex with even if he didn't have the best career path. But, having read it again when I got older, it makes a lot of sense. Plus, her and Will had a lot of growth to do. Will had to grow beyond his time as a dealer and Eve needed to figure out how to move past Park. The final arc where they got together and their sex scene was both emotionally satisfying and hot as hell, something I think Gran balances well. She does the same in the PT: STS.

>I need to get on playing PT: Station to Station; I've almost been putting it off because I don't want it to be over. I love Gran's writing so much.
I definitely get that, though you should definitely go for it! Genuinely, I think you can get 2-3 playthroughs and still have new stuff to see or uncover if you try out the full aspects of the relationships and the assignment element. The base story is very good and the choices you make on future playthroughs can enrich the characters of the game quite a bit. There's no "dire choices", like Mara won't die if you choose something or another, but you get to enrich her and her relationships with the other characters. You get to see their shortcomings, positives, etc and the impacts it has on Mara as a character. I've been meaning to do a 4th replay sometime soon, I've enjoyed it that much. Also, Rosetta is easily the best character of the game but maybe that's my bias towards good-natured artsy women who like to wear black.
