Now that the dust has settled, was losing the Archieverse worth the tradeoff to IDW?

I'd rather rip my fingernails off than read a modern Sonic comic but I was very, very glad to see the Archie comic finally go. I loved it in the 90s but it was sad to see what became of the book in the few years leading up to its cancellation. Just like TMNT Adventures had done before it, it succumbed to Cerebus syndrome pretty early on. But while TMNT was granted a mercy execution, Sonic was allowed to continue living on in a sad, suffereing state, like a three legged deer limping on the side of the highway for days in pain. Thank god, dead is better, let the past die, etc.Now Sonic is 100% a zoomer property and that's fine. The kids can keep it.

Having to throw out nearly a BUNCH of characters that readers over the years go to know and enjoy, as well as the various storylines said characters were apart of really sucked.Archie reboot WAS looking to be good, but the Unleashed adaptation being strapped to getting this new universe set up hurt it in the long run (Chip having off panel moments connecting with the FFs is still sour in my eyes). The TWO crossovers with Megaman didn't help things, especially the second one. The Reboot going away sucks because stories were being set up, only AGAIN to be halted (Antoine's search for the Sacred Swords, Eclipse's survival on Mobius, Nephthys' balancing act with Eggman, Maw's development of the new Roboticizer).IDW's problem, and I will always champion this, is it being locked to canon. I, personally, never cared that stuff from Archie never got in the games, I was reading Archie FOR Archie. IDW doesn't get that luxury, game characters are completely static until Sega does something with them in the games, and so far all the OCs introduce have only affected each other (and in T&W case, it's hurt them).
>>155624712I will say IDW's art is far more consistent. As example however, right now the last issue basically stared a bunch of maid OCs while blaze sat in a chair for two issues and Silver pops up. The prior six months has been the team following a mystery OC. It has become pretty clear the staff are just collecting a pay check and putting efforts into their other gigs. I loved Archie but can understand why video game purest would hate it. Which is all the more reason to hate the ending as Archie got a major reboot towards the end which was way more centered in joining the gaming + animations cast together and trimming the 15+ years of soap opera drama.

You'll end up with absolute garbage sometimes but you'll also end up with interesting stuff, too. Instead of the bland nothingburger advertisement that it is now.

I followed it for YEARS just because I was a Sonic fan, but it was never good. I never gave a shit about any Freedom Fighter. >>155624318No, but that's also not the actual question.It is more along the lines of, was a canon comic better for the Sonic franchise?I'd argue the answer there is still no, the IDW comics being canon instead of just tie-in media makes them a lot more limited in the stories they can tell.They aren't really creating new and interesting stories for Sonic that matter to the rest of the franchise as much as they have a luxury playground.
