I think audiences would have been more forgiving of their behavior in the trailer if they were kids or teenagers (with shorter designs). Teenagers are still old enough to have enough memories to make the story work. The film throws in lots of little gags based on 90s pop culture for the parents that kids aren't going to laugh at, and parents at the right age to appreciate the jokes might not yet have old enough children to tolerate the scary scenes. There were parents in my theater, I know they were at the right age for the jokes but their kids were terrified by Manang and the film has the temerity to include actual jump scares as well which was an awful choice. The film being set in the 90s has no positive bearing on the story, they should have made it set in modern times if they weren't going to engage with the aesthetics of the 90s on a deeper level and it would have allowed them to include pop culture jokes that the children would have had a chance of appreciating.

There are gags that are meant to be gross that are just visually unpleasant and I think the intent was that kids would find it funny but I think the end result is less funny because the main characters surrounded by all this are adult women who often express discomfort or embarrassment about it. I think audiences, especially little boys, kind of expect and more easily accept things like fart jokes from characters who are little boys (or at least dudes) and feel differently when it's female characters. I can see little girls disliking that aspect of the movie. Even though the leads are female you can kind of tell the directors are male. There's too many characters in the movie and they are all a little too energetic. We didn't need the giant baby man or the merman. A smaller cast and more varied energy levels across the cast would have helped. Despite the 3 male characters in the cast none of them are cool or likable so I think the film still lacked something for little boys to connect to despite the humor being better suited for them. I have more notes for how I think the movie could have been tweaked to be more broadly appealing but it's gonna come across as nitpicking especially when the movie was still, overall quite good. It's just I can understand why this didn't connect with audiences better.
