I was reading the Unbelievables, formerly the Family Odysseys from Images’s Ghost Machine imprint.Peter Tomasi is building this family-themed comic universe up but it’s clear he had two or three solid comic ideas and the rest are goofy one-hit concepts.Like the 1-3 page backup comics at the end of an Archie issue.Of the core three: Hornsby & Halo, The Rocketfellers and The Trillion Dollar Kid. H&H is the best written. It has the right scope and the right level of action & angst. Plus a pair of slightly morally grey teens who bounce off each other.Rocketfellers feels like the edgy modern reboot of a classic comic. Too much focus on the threat chasing them from the future or people trying to uncover their secret. And not enough family out of time shenanigans. The kids haven’t even been shown going to school and actively don’t make friends. A little more Phil of the Future/Third Rock From the Sun would be better. The Trillion Dollar Kid is all lore and meta-progression of the universe. And while that’s good, it’s a little hollow. On top of the Richie Rich-like silliness which is already hollow.
I liked Hornsby and Halo, but yeah the other two didn't grab me.The Rocketfellers feels like it should have started with slice of life with the threat in the background, give a couple issues to meet the characters and the family dynamics, but it throws you off into thedeep end and I don't care about these peopleso why should I care about their problem? The Hyde Street comics have the same problem. Interesting premise, but could you give more than two horror anthology issues before it starts in on an overarching plot? Don't send off the horror stories to spin-offs, you don't deserve to have spin-offs before you have something spin from.Guy apparently never learned that he needs to introduce the characters.
>>155663474>Hornsby & HaloRead a couple of issues and it's extremely boring.
>>155664763It’s about teens with stable home lives. Of course it’s boring.
>>155663474What's Tomasi's best work of all time?
>>155663474Honestly my problem with The Rocketfellers is the opposite, throwing me into the slice-of-life stuff before making me care about the characters. I honestly think issue 0 should been the beggining.
