Without irony, if the autuers only storyboard, and the Koreans are the ones to actually do the animation in their sweatshop in the most barebones way possible (because a sweatshop in Korea is still too expensive for animated tv shows to really profit), why not just AI the whole thing? Why wax lyrical about 'the craft' when that doesn't even happen in America anymore anyway? To protect storyboarders? The truth is that quality animation died a long time ago because the economics stopped making sense. I don't know if AI will fix anything, but the current system isn't worth protecting either.
America can absolutely afford to do animation here if they didn’t exclusively do it in the two most expensive cities in the entire country. Also AI is literally not capable of making a coherent tv episode.
>why not just AI the whole thing?because it looks boring at best and creepy and off putting at worst. but you don't want to have a real conversation though
>>155665044The cities aren't even the problem as much as the investors. You still make a good return from an all-American animation team in an expensive city; it's just not 50 percent. American finance and its many minions such as OP are opposed to all worthy investment because it makes less money than scams.
>>155665052It will be normalized so the new tykes raised on AI slop consider it normal.
>>155665072As OP, I am not against it, I am just acknowledging the constraints Capital chooses to place us in, stating the obvious end results, and weighing the different outcomes. If it were up to me, things would change, but I am not a dictator.
Koreans can animate good shows too.
>>155665019>, if the autuers only storyboardthis of course downplays the importance of storyboarding which is where what the finished product is decidedbut also, voicing, scripting, character design, editing are all done in-houseyou also actually need good assets to be sent for finishing in the studio, they just do the gruntwork of in-betweens
>>155665176Just as you downplay the 'gruntwork' in relation to the storyboarder, so too will the AI prompter downplay the storyboard in relation to his his own 'craft'. "The storyboard was all just menial labor to bring my thoughtful creation to life. The true artistry was in prompting and providing the AI with loose references."
>>155665019AI should be illegal
Aqua Teen Hunger Force basically proved to me that the problem with a lot of cartoons isn’t that the animation or art are bad, but that the characters suck and the jokes aren’t funny. That show had a budget of $8 and was insanely loved compared to something like Big City Greens which costs a million an episode.
>>155665019The problem is that the channel fell from raking in $1 Billion annually in the 2000s to $300 million today, and when you adjust for inflation it's almost a 90% drop. Cord cutting has something to do with it obviously but also the drop from 3 million concurrent viewers to 40,000 is an anomaly only affecting cartoons
>>155665044>Also AI is literally not capable of making a coherent tv episode.Yet
>>155665444But animation was outsourced to Korea in the past too.
>>155665454>not yet!>just you wait!>it’s only getting better!>wait a few years!Shit hasn’t improved since 2024, it’s over
>>155665072it doesn't make less money than scams, though. They want to fail. They want the entire system to fail, because they are pawns of those who benefit from our failure.>>155665326It's funny, for a hot second I thought you guys would succeed. I mean, there won't be any AI soon because there won't be any fucking electricity, but I'm really surprised at how (while still completely contradicting you) things progressed so differently from how they were moving before.>>155665645it's perfectly capable of doing what the koreans did. That is all it should do, all it ever should have done. let real artists do keyframes, let computers do the inbetweening. let a real artist color the character once, let the computer color it from there. Let a real artist decide on the artistic lighting and shit the scene should have, let the computer apply that to all frames
>>155665019It's amazing, digital animation should have cut the overall cost and time of animation down to a fraction, maybe 1% what it wasbut somehow, conveniently, every animation studio exec was like "Actually this is much more expensive.. um.. just trust us. sorry, we gotta cut the quality and raise the prices" as dollar bills just burst out of their pockets. Bills that are worth less and less each year due to their idiocy, so they are actually poorer in terms of buying power.
>>155665126But it's not the state of capital as much as a specific notion of investment that wasn't believed just 20 or 30 years ago. The default beliefs of incumbents don't have to be respected just because of how loud they are. It is a matter of financing better works and more works with lower return. When that becomes the problem it becomes a matter of increasing access to capital for the public, which has a myriad policy proposals.
>>155666080You can already do tweening without AI. In fact, the biggest use case of AI in animation isn't on the visual side, it's sound design.
>>155665019This joke is 5 years old, let it go
>>155665019Animators ALSO hate shipping everything out to Korea most of the time. Also it's worth noting back in the day animation directors would fly out to Korea and work with them to keep the show consistent, unlike now where studios just don't pay for any of that oversight which is why animation looks so much more stiff and lifeless these days compared to the 90s. They just don't have as much director oversight.
