No. Peter losing his temper and flying off the handle very much was his character. Frankly it's something that's been sorely missing from the books for a very long time.
>>
>>155665987
its because it was toned down after he graduated high school
which retroactively made his angry teen phase into just his teenage machismo that he eventually grew out of

No? Peter being a belligerent hothead was a core part of his character from the start. Obviously, he mellowed out some after he matured, but he retained a mean streak whenever he felt that he was being fucked with, and he was most certainly being fucked with in this scene. Cryptic mystical crap tends to be badly received even in the best of days..

The last few decades went too far though, and turned him into a completely spineless bitch. At this point even his quips are like 80% just shitting on himself. It's just sad to watch.

Not really. He was flying off the handle all through the 80s and 90s. I'd say in some ways he got worse.

Peter gets dealt a bad hand all the god damn time and he gets UPSET about it, he blows a fuse like any regular human being would. It's weirder if he DOESN'T.

This is a common sight in the early comics, and once you realize how toned down it is in more modern renditions you can't UN-realize it.

I really dislike the sanitization of Spider-Man's character for the sake of making him an inspirational paragon of virtue. He can still be plenty heroic and inspirational while keeping his signature rough edges and character flaws, there was never a need to turn him into Marvel's Superman. You already have Cap for that.
>>
>>155666142
Oh fuck off.
>>
>>155666199
The thing with Pete is that while he has that temper and blows his top, he'll usually real it back around. Not always, he's made a mess of JJ plenty of times, but generally his guilt and sense of responsibility get the better of him. It's the dueling forces that are part of what's interesting about him. Kind of like the Hulk as an avatar of rage and Id but also containing a sense of morality. Old comics were a lot smarter.

Yep, Peter/Spider-Man was always meant to be the relatable everyman, not a paragon. He always tries to do the right thing, but like any normal person, he makes mistakes. He stumbles, he falls, but he gets back up and keeps trying. Making him someone who never makes mistakes but is always cursed to have shit falling on his head due to the ol' "Parker Luck" is missing the point of the character.

Is Peter the first coded-Autism superhero? Think about it. He literally has to "mask" to be able to be a jokey, wisecracking superhero, and his real identity is a sullen, moody nerd who mistakes sarcasm and lite-ribbing for aggression, sending him into an autistic rage. Also keep in mind Steve Ditko based Peter heavily on himself, and there's a lot of evidence that Ditko was on the spectrum.

I dont know if it counts but when Torment killed Paul, Spiderman didn't look like he was bothered by it. There was inner monologue about him failing to save Paul, Spiderman just look conflicted over the whole thing. Like, part of Peter WANTED Paul to die. I know people want Spiderman to be a perfect hero but he does have moments which are pretty unhero like.

Madam web is a stupid character. I thought she was dumb way back when I watched this as a kid, and she still just seems like a dumb concept to me now like 50 years later.

Whats her deal in the comics? Where did she come from, and what does she even do? Does she have legs?
>>
>>155666508
adding mysticism to Spider-man is just dumb. He's radioactive and fights tech baddies.

>>
>>155666508
>Whats her deal in the comics? Where did she come from, and what does she even do? Does she have legs?
Outside of the spider motif, she isnt really connected much to Spider-Man. She's a clairvoyant/telepathic Mutant like Professor X or Jean Grey, the "webs" behind her are a life support system.
>>
>>155666508
She’s just a psychic
>>155666536

It's not that he can't fight a magic villain now and again but to try and add in some kind of mystical origin to his powers and make it about destiny undermine him.

I'm cool with Spider-Man teaming up with Strange since Ditko created both of them and it's a nice way of tying his legacy at Marvel together.

I've heard people complain about Spider-Man teaming up with other Marvel heroes in his solo films, but that's honestly been the least of my criticisms of MCU Spidey. I had no problems with Doctor Strange in No Way Home and Punisher and Hulk in Brand New Day, they're the kind of characters that regularly guest-star in the comics anyway, or at least did before the comics got shitty.

That was one of the potential treatments for Brand New Day getting tossed around with Kingpin as the main antagonist. Vincent D'Onofrio hinted that it has to do with some legal bullshit between the film and TV divisions of Marvel, and Sony currently having the film rights to Kingpin in Spider-Man movies along with all of his other villains.

He threw an S-tier temper tantrum once every Olympics or so. The "long temper, short fuse" trope. It was also part of the defining characteristic about his relationship with the black suit sympiote that would become Venom. The symbiote amplified all of his worst impulses.

Actually that's something the shoulder tackle cartoon added, in the comics the symbiote just took control of his body while he slept to go webswinging and feed on his adrenaline.

The ideal Peter Parker should both:

1. Have an awful temperament and slight misanthropic tendencies, leading him to easily take offense upon perceived mistreatment and keep him as somewhat of a misfit loner across the super community, even if he can still get along with them most of the time. To some extent, Peter ought to hold some level of resentment towards society and the figure of Spider-Man itself because of all the sacrifices he has to make only to receive vitriol in return.

(In rare extreme cases, his attitude can even gain him the enmity of other people and straight up make him long time enemies from opponents that he mocked or antagonized too much.)

2. A strong moral core and sense of duty towards others, as a result of being raised by Ben and May Parker, and branded with fire into him by the loss of his father figure the one time he ignored these lessons. Both the guilt of Ben's death and his good upbringing are what keep him coming back to put on the mask and make numerous sacrifices, even in those times he deeply resents his responsibility and wishes to quit. This also lets him see past the anger and feel compassion for others, as well as noticing that there's gratitude among the vitriol.

To me, the appeal of the character comes from his innate personality flaws being tempered by good role models and painful life lessons. Peter learned to be a hero and an admirable person, and had those circumstances changed he easily could have grown into an arrogant misanthrope or someone abusing his powers for personal gain, which is why the likes of Doc Ock and the Green Goblin are usually used as foils to what he could have become.

Take away the temper, the aggression and all the other flaws and what we get is the lame, messianic martyr Spider-Man of today, who needs all his issues to fall on him from the sky like some divine punishment to create the drama that used to grow organically from his social interactions and general situation.
>>
>>155665987
I was thinking the other day how having a short fuse was part of Spider-man character in the 60s and 70s. They did away with that when they decided to make him a perma-dork.

>>
>>155670583
That happened the instant Bendis, BND, and other fags like that made him more quirky and vocally unsure of himself in increasing scenes when he is Spider-Man rather than thought bubbles and him confiding to people like MJ. Spider-Man when appearing public never was a fucking gay quirk chungus in issues before the 00's. Yes there was comedy and he did get embarrassed sometimes like Commuter Cometh or he lost control and hit Firelord too much. But in those instances he still pushed back on whatever was happening or ruminated on it like an adult.

He crashed out regularly in his personal life Pre-Quesada and it made him relatable and human more so than being a perpetual manchild loser, at any rate because even ACTUAL saints lost their tempers, yes, even Jesus against the money lenders and Sadducess infamously at the temple if they are DETERMINED to go down the "St. Parker" route that Carnage pointed out in that lame Death Spiral event.
