From what we see of the Southern Water Tribe in the show, Katara and Sokka are the only people around their age. After a few years of isolation, they would have been desperate and without many other options.Sokka likely would have had plenty of older women after him, considering he is the only male in the tribe old enough, so he wouldn't have been as desperate. Katara is a different story though. Besides Sokka there are no men in the tribe old enough. Only a bunch of actual kids, so Katara would not have had any choices besides Sokka. I believe Sokka would have been perfectly fine with his existing choices until Katara started demanding more from him.
