He seems incredibly short-sighted for a character who was supposed to be an experienced hunter. For one thing, he doesn't seem to make any efforts to actually find the gorilla nesting grounds himself, even though it should be abundantly clear that the location must be within a reasonable walking distance since Tarzan goes between there and the human camp fairly quickly. Instead he just demands that Tarzan tell him where the gorillas are. As a hunter, shouldn't he have a lot of experience in tracking animals on his own?Secondly, he makes a massive mistake before the climax of the film. Why didn't he just let the Porters and Tarzan go off to England on the ship? They wouldn't have even been a problem then. As soon as the ship was gone and out of sight, the poachers and Clayton could have had free reign over the jungle and captured all the gorillas they wanted, then they'd just have to wait until a ship returned to collect them, and go home and sell all of them off for a large profit. He already had a map of where the nesting grounds were. He just had to be a little bit more patient.
>>155674226He's not even really a badguy in the novels. Bit of a bro actually.
>>155674226>As a hunter, shouldn't he have a lot of experience in tracking animals on his own?Yes, he should. He's probably much less capable than he gives himself credit.>As soon as the ship was gone and out of sight, the poachers and Clayton could have had free reign over the jungle and captured all the gorillas they wanted, then they'd just have to wait until a ship returned to collect themI mean, it's still 19th century Africa. Staying in uncharted territory for so long is probably going to kill you. If not the wildlife, the diseases will do it. Livingstone died during his stay, and he was in a considerably less hazardous place than the middle of nowhere equatorian jungle.>He already had a map of where the nesting grounds were.Gorillas migrate. By the time he could actually start again, they might have long migrated far from reach.
>>155674226>t should be abundantly clear that the location must be within a reasonable walking distanceehhh... that's not really how jungles workif you don't know where you're going it'll take a long time to get therealso do you know what a porter actually does
>>155674226>since Tarzan goes between there and the human camp fairly quicklyThe guy who swings on vines like spider-man and can travel fast?
>>155675734You clearly haven't seen the movie. The Porters are Professor Porter and Jane Porter (Tarzan's love interest). Not just random people on the expedition who carry stuff around.
>>155674226yeah,he's a poorly written character >>155676295na,OP is right. Realistically he totally could've have find the gorillas on his own terms of he was that invested
>>155676854No
>>155674226Bro just wanted some rilla skins
>>155676854>on his own terms of he was that investedINVESTED being the big word here. Do you know what kind of INVESTMENT a jungle adventure requires? Not one he can do just on a whim.
>>155676718why would i have seen a children's movie made after my kids left home
>>155674226>For one thing, he doesn't seem to make any efforts to actually find the gorilla nesting grounds himself, even though it should be abundantly clear that the location must be within a reasonable walking distanceThis would be reasonable except this is Tarzan that we're talking about, he's doing jungle parkour, flinging himself off trees and cliffs and moving extremely fast. There's no guarantee that the gorillas are within walking distance based off Tarzan alone, a 10 minute time until arrival of Tarzan might mean he came from the other side of the island for all Clayton knows.>Why didn't he just let the Porters and Tarzan go off to England on the ship?Clayton is engaging in a bit of a personal vendetta here, Tarzan has frustrated him all film and now he holds the cards. The question in Clayton's mind is probably "Why shouldn't I imprison Tarzan?". He probably considers the danger of Tarzan escaping the ship and interfering with his operations to be remote. While it's never directly stated, Clayton also lives in an era where you can sell humans. For all we know he planned to sell Jane and Tarzan to some freak show for massive profit. >He already had a map of where the nesting grounds were. See above, additionally as another anon said, gorillas migrate and with Tarzan gone they might start moving around and/or hiding. They certainly have no reason to tolerate more humans moving among them, and Tarzan already brought Jane to them. Kerchak might move his group around in the (correct) assumption that she could've told other humans where they were.
>>155676996Because you need to
>>155676996For Jane's sexy voice
>>155676718I remember when this movie came out that the only reason my father cared about that movie was to see Phil Collins taking home an Oscar. I wanted South Park to take it that year.
>>155674226>For one thing, he doesn't seem to make any efforts to actually find the gorilla nesting grounds himself, even though it should be abundantly clear that the location must be within a reasonable walking distance since Tarzan goes between there and the human camp fairly quickly. Instead he just demands that Tarzan tell him where the gorillas are. As a hunter, shouldn't he have a lot of experience in tracking animals on his own?In real life, jungles are very dense, dark, and scary places to be in. You can barely see 10 feet in front of you because the foliage is so thick. You can easily get lost and never found again in the jungle without having someone like Tarzan as a guide.
>>155677240Was your dad a big Phil Collins fan or something?
>>155677382No, but my dad dated the girl Phil would marry before he married my mom. My dad and Phil hit it off and kept in touch after college and thus my dad was rooting for him to win an award.
>>155674226>Why didn't he just let the Porters and Tarzan go off to England on the ship?1. Renting ships costs money nigga2. Given that Clayton most likely was renting out a tramp steamer (ships, usually ones operated by individual owners, that don't operate scheduled ports of call, but go from port to port, taking cargo for whatever client will hire them) as opposed to a freight liner (ships that are operated by companies on a scheduled route similar to their passenger carrying counterparts like Cunard or White Star), there would have been no way of telling where or when he could secure another ship, especially since the film takes place far from any of the major African ports like Cape Town, Durban, or Mombasa where the tramp trade thrives the most.
>>155676854>OP is rightnope
>>155674226His experience probably consisted mostly of the 19th century equivalent of canned hunts, sipping tea comfortably in a howdah while the drivers did all the hard work.
>>155677430Oh neat, I didn't expect that.
>>155678397If that's true he still managed to be a good shot and rounded up an entire group of gorillas without issue (albeit with help). He only lost because an human raised by apes intervened. In hindsight this does probably point to issues with his leadership if it just takes one semi-feral guy in a loincloth to foil his hunt.
>>155674226He's a children's cartoon character. Try to remember how you reacted to stuff you watched as a kid. You didn't care about professionals being portrayed plausibly, you saw a guy who acts mean and gruff and thought there was something off about him, so it made perfect sense when he became a more active villain 40 minutes later.
>>155676996>either i'm just right or it appears that i forgot to feed my childrinbad logic why in this thread get fucked etc
>>155674309Well Disney's Tarzan certainly didn't get that across...
>>155674226NOT CLAYTON, NOT CLAYTON
Clayton is a brute with a thin veneer of civility that views Africa as his personal plaything. The only time he ever actually uses any finesse is when he manipulates Tarzan using Jane. Aside from that, his modus operandi is "Use my guns to take what I want".Why didn't he track the gorillas? Why didn't he wait for Tarzan and Jane to leave? Why bother, when he can launch out with an army of hired goons and blast away anything in his path? It's a major thematic climax that Tarzan bests him by working with the environment, rather than against it, and that Clayton's instinct to hack away and barrel through anything in his path is what ultimately kills him.
Why didn't he use the big chameleon heartless in the movie?
>>155680897Lack of power
>>155674226Getting cucked by a gorilla man was throwing off his game
>>155676996>why would i have seen a children's movie made after my kids left homeWhy would you be in a thread discussing a movie you haven't seen?
>>155674309And Kerchak was a piece of shit, lol.
