Rewatched The Venture Bros.
I remember alot of people saying season 1 was kinda rough and season 5 was a bit of a 'eh' season but honestly I think it holds up fantasticality.
Season 1 has a certain charm to it and Season 5 I think really does alot to elevate alot of characters.
Is it because of St. Cloud that people shit on Season 5?
>>
>>155677478
Season 5 felt like they wanted to do typical adventures like the first 3 seasons but kept going back to overarching plot stuff
Also the finale for it being a blu-ray exclusive sucked
We talked about in past threads that season 5 should have had 21 become the new venture body guard
>>
>>155677535
The finale being blu-ray exclusive is shit but I can chalk that up to Warner-Brothers kinda not knowing what to do with it. Its still on streaming for the time and I guess if you check the right places you can just torrent it.

Gary definitely felt like he got the short end of the stick for Season 5. Alot of episodes he's just hanging around not really doing shit, it helped that Season 6 focused on him and The Monarch alot but he 100% was one of the biggest losers going from Season 4 to 5.
>>
Season 1 is awesome
>>
People hate on Dermott too much, rewatching it made me appreciate him being an anchor for Hank. He's funny.
>>
Boy I sure could use a smoke right now.
>>
Why does Dean sound like Leonardo?
>>
>>155677739

>>
Season 5 is a pretty great season but the overarching plot does get a bit suffocating, the build up of The Sovereign purging the council in an attempt to stop the OSI and deal with The Investors takes up so much of the season but with it being broken up so much it can feel a bit exhausting. I'm not complaining since I love the guild stuff but its does kinda strangle the season.

You have to remember you are posting in a contrarian shithole where "cred" is gained by hating or at least being critical of things.

The whole show is a marvelous venture (pun intended). Now some cretin will call me a shill or something, it is what it is.

What's your problem with St. Cloud? The Bellicose Proxy episode in season 7 was pretty crappy and a lot of the episode was just based on how cringy St. Cloud is, but 'eat the pennies' was one of the funniest jokes in the series.
>>
>>155677903
Show is full of home runners, St.Cloud is a bit of a lame duck. He isn't horrible I just think that Billy and Pete work better off of Rusty than him.
I think the only characters people agree were pretty crap were The Moppets.
>>
I like St. Cloud

I dunno, in Spanikopita there was good and bad, but before that he was a pretty decent ancillary character.

And as for the Moppets, they just didn't really do anything. They were more like a prop. Didn't really take away from anything either though. Just characters they didn't have any good ideas for I suppose, and so they just killed them off.

Anyway, since this is a Venture Bros thread, I have a theory about Force Majeure based solely on his visual inspiration. His face IS modeled after Anton LaVey, the founder of the Church of Satan and LaVey’s story fits surprisingly well within the world of VB.
LaVey was a failed musician who became paranormal investigator and eventually realized how easy it was to fool wealthy New Age believers. He began charging people for supposedly secret occult rituals and eventually went all in by announcing the formation of the Church of Satan. The whole thing was designed to attract as much media attention as possible and it worked. newspapers across the country covered him and thousands of people became interested in the Church of Satan.
The thing is LaVey himself did not really believe in magic or the supernatural in the way many of his followers did. He presented Satanism more as a philosophy centered around individualism. Eventually, many of followers became dissatisfied with this and broke away to form their own Satanic organizations that actually believed in magic.
LaVey, meanwhile, largely treated the whole thing as a performanc to attract attention and make money. It's possible that this is the direction Doc and Jackson intended to take Force Majeure.

>Guild of Calamitous Intent was actually just a kind of Ponzi Scheme?
More like Majure’s version of the Guild was staged as a performance piece. His idea of the supervillain, like Lavary’s idea of Satanism, was a metaphor for individualism and rising above societal norms. But then crazies with ray guns started entering the picture and actually believing in all of it and he kind of just went along with it. He and Jonas were the only two guys who thought the whole thing was just funny.
>>
>>155678143
>FM: You know it’s all just a joke right mate? We are not actually supposed to be a legitimate group of “super villains” it’s all for show, even Jonas knows that
>Sovereign: Haha, nice excuse, now on the ground *cocks laser rifle*

I'm geniunly curious how Venture Bros. managed to be as good as it did.
It's pastiche of taking older pulp/comic media and throwing a edgier meta-parody spin to it is one that has gotten really old over they years and most attempts nowadays fall flat. Like when you really think about so much of the jokes and bit's are stuff you'd see on somewthing like fucking Dorkly.

So how does it still manage hold up? Why did something like The Harley Quinn Show which practically copied its homework come off as lesser while this remained classic until the very end?
>>
>>155679366
It's been awhile since I've seen it so I cant be very specific. It wasnt just superheroes either it was Hannah Barbera especially Johnny Quest. Sometimes shit comes out where people jam everything they love together and the pure soul shines through partly because they combine it in interesting ways. That and its genuinely funny and well written. There is a thing called affectionate parody, not all parodies used to be stupidly spiteful. Also they did the Tick right? So they had lots of practice.
>>
>>155677842
Being here since Venture first premiered I do remember people constantly complaining about Brock and how he wasn't like he was in Season 1 for the entire show, because they didn't want his character to change
So you would always see people saying Brock was bad in a episode because he didn't kill people the same way. Hell I remember that in season two when he stopped their "mom" from kidnapping them by doing the backwards fall into the car, people HATED that. Wanted her to be mauled to death by Brock or something. Very strange
>>
>>155679366
The writers
>>
>>155678053
Compelling, but I think Doc & Jack would have made more fun of LeVay's ears if they had done that deliberately.
>>
>>155678078
More like performance/anti-establishment art that people took way too seriusly.
Satanism was made up as a literal joke to piss off the hyper conservative culture of it's time. Like some of the first things he did when setting up the CHurch was do charity events and give food to homeless shelters- but while also saying "Hail Satan".

But he didn't ACTUALLY believe Satan. He was an Athiest fucking with people.
So I can imagine a version of Force Majeure who didn't have any real grand plan beyond "I did all this to piss of Jonas/The OSI".

Its weird.
I fucking hate referential humour, yet Venture Bro's always passes the sniff test for me.
This series is fucking filled to the brim with references to nerd shit but it always feels so tactful and integrated into the world. The show will literally throw you a Spiderman wannabe and then move onto the next scene.
I hate beating this horse because everyone already does it, but watching something like Rick and Morty the references are utterly bludgeoned over your head, early season it wasn't too bad but Christ they get really bad later.

What the hell was the special sauce which made VB get away with it?
>>

R&M is like giving the simpsons animation budget to the southpark guys but only if they dial back the politics to flintstones levels, it was never good, it was just walking with the rhythm of transgressive humor, so you end up with what seems at first a surprising number of jokes about pedophilia, addiction, and of course casual murder, and then you find out the guy who's been adlibbing this fratboy shit for the first decade is some kind of unspecified charges dropped golden parachute asshole

the references don't stand out there because there's no jokes or because it can't be funny, they stand out because they're insincere, dotting the i's and crossing the t's for a paycheck; it's not that nobody working on the show is a genuine fan of the things they're referencing, it's that they're never going to work on anything remotely as popular in their lives so from day one they've had this tension of totally anodyne stuff working against the need to seem punchy and outrageous, and like anything else with no idea what it's meant to be, that became punching down and reading out the headlines to sound like you're with "it", whatever "it" is

always a bad show, always doomed even without the personalities involved, but one of those pieces where someone high up bet big on it early on and it got heavy promotion and lots of inward investment

remember rap-rock bands? remember what heavy promotion and lots of early investment in those assholes did to what was left of the music industry? and that's why the only gigs you go to now are pig-poke barnyard bands or billionaire arena shows featuring Band You Used To Like on support

symptom of the disease

He did believe in magic, but it was more akin to what we’d call will and persuasion. He just didn’t believe in spirits or gods.

Venture bros. is a museum of everything Publick and Hammer love.
They were kids in the 70s, teens in the 80s, and cut their teeth in the animation industry as young adults in the 90s.

VB escapes the trappings of millennial referential humor that steeped in irony and sarcasm because they genuinely love everything they reference.
Instead of just doing "Hey Guise! Remember this?"
They show you something they love and use the show's narrative to show why they love it in the first place.
>>
>>155679366
Because the story and characters feel real, even if the world they inhabit is insane. That’s the secret sauce.
>>
Hammer/McCullough did everything right. its hilarious no one will ever hire them to make more TV. the only way you can produce a professional animated show on a major network is if its a massively popular IP or its cheap trash targeted at the lowest common denominator subhumans.
>>

The season 5 finale wasn't blu-ray exlusive. While season 5 was a bit abrupt, it still had a more conclusive end compared to season 6, which just ENDS as though there's a whole episode missing. That said, ATAG2 was definitely a better finale compared to Devil's Grip, if only because it had the high-stakes of previous finales whereas DG felt more like the lead-in to something big happening (which was mostly just Hatred getting gaslit by the midgets)
>>
>>155679366
If I'm not mistaken, both Doc and Jackson were comic writers, so they had history writing witty stuff and character interactions that feel natural a lot of the time (and often basing some of the arguments off the two having geeky conversations about stupid shit). It's one reason I always felt like the series was superior to Rick and Morty, which just feels like "MCU: the cartoon but with cursing and blood"
>>
>>155679621
It was great, but the finale (if it can be called that) felt so... barely existent. Still a great season overall, I just wish they had been able to make something more bombastic to end on.
>>
>>155681468
I would say that the first two seasons of R&M were alright. Not perfect, but WAY more tolerable compared to what would come later (namely the women writers).

I mean, it probably was building to something, or at least they were leaving it open for a reveal with him showing up to save Hank. Though knowing Doc and Jackson, his true identity wasn't set in stone until they felt ready to pull off whatever came to mind down the road. Those two were surprisingly good at making last-minute decisions instead of meticulously planning out everything from square 1 and hoping they reach a planned finish line.
>>
>>155680227
It always surprises me to hear that too. I thought everyone knew a Dermott at some point in their life and even if you didn't you can see that the creators were clearly poking fun at people like him. From what I've seen, most Dermott haters just think he's a chud, but I find he's endearing anyways.
>>
>>155681669
I never understood why people think Trianna and Dean would last long since they barely had anything in common besides having neurotic fathers. Personally, I would have liked to see Dean get a new friend in the NYC arc like the way Hank made friends with Dermott. He almost got that with Sirena, but unfortunately he just had to sleep with her. I suppose it's very telling that what he really wanted was his friend and brother back if you remember his speech to comatose Hank.
>>
>>155684018
Yeah exactly!! He’s like Fugger from bridge kids too, that type of personality
>>
>>155682627
I always stuck with the idea that its Hank from the future that got stuck in the past somehow and either lost his fucking mind then or sometime after and just went around in a bear costume scaring and/or stabbing people. It would explain how he showed up in the middle of a fucking blizzard to scoop up a concussed Hank and bring him right to his girlfriend sleeping with his brother. They had the small bit in another episode where Rusty and Monarch encounter another Rusty and Billy popping out of the time machine wardrobe for a few seconds, where alt!Rusty sees the Monarch and asks ".....Malcolm?" Its clear they were looking to do some time travel shenanigans in what would have been the final season of the show

Continuing with this interpretation, you could have the Peril Partnership be established as a breakaway faction from the Guild, much like the Temple of Set. ToS was founded by Michael Aquino, a former high-ranking member of the Church of Satan, after he became dissatisfied with Anton LaVey’s rejection of the supernatural. Aquino later claimed that he experienced a vision in which Satan appeared to him and declared that LaVey had committed a sacrilege and lost the “Infernal Mandate,” which was then supposedly transferred to Aquino.
The whole story would honestly be hilarious if it weren’t for Aquino’s real-world background. He was a US colonel who served in Psychological Operations and became an influential figure in military psychological-warfare circles during the 1960s and 1970s in Vietnam. He was also a child rapist connected to a child trafficking ring.

>>
>>155686225
They work when they don’t overstay their welcome.
>>
>>155682643
Actually I think the Master might’ve been keeping them apart until they both matured. He seemed like he didn’t want them to become co-dependent on each other by being each other’s first love, since Dean always liked her and Triana was starting to develop an attraction to Dean. I don’t think he would interfere with them now, since Dean grew up a lot and we’re told Triana has as well.
>>
>>155684018
Dermott grows on you. He’s the kind of guy you don’t like at first but ends up being cool when you get to know him a bit. I think he mellowed considerably after Dean beat him up.

That was true for much of the series, even if it did get less and less obvious as time went on. It was definitely leaned into more deliberately because of the budget constraints for the animation, and then toyed with in various episodes after where they wanted to make the JB spoofs indicators of past events like Rusty's shitacular childhood.

Rocko immediately rolling with the hide and seek thing makes him. There's a lot of guys in VB where just one line or moment makes them work
>>
>>155691371
they really captured that goombah look and mannerism. my best friend looked and talked like a less jacked version of Rocko, god rest his soul. The guy got MAD puss. Just throwing itself at him. He couldn't go to the bathroom without three or four chicks waiting in ambush.

Funnily enough I think I like Pete more independantly from Billy than as a duo with him, the scene where he chops Doc Venture's neck with an axe because he has to "sever the hard line" is absolutely gutbustingly hilarious for how tense that situation was. In fact that whole resolution to Doctor Venture felt really satisfying

>You can't make a parody if you dislike something.
This is something true people don't want to believe.
>>
>>155691412
at the very, very least, you must KNOW something to parody it. and knowing a lot about something you hate is supposed to hurt a little. You have to be careful it doesn't turn you. see the South Park guys (another tip: if 'learning about them' means 'immersing yourself in their manufactured narrative', just don't)

What if we get a Venture Bros revival like 10 years from now that takes place during the time that they're fucking around with time travel. Not that the whole revival is ABOUT time travel, that's just when all that stuff happens
That would be fun

Pretty much this. They've done what, about six or seven fucking Voltron references, including that anime one where Summer wants to fuck the robot? Feels like Roiland or whatever really had a fascination with that show or something. But instead of just making the references and making them CLEVER, they just spell it out
>huuur, no! she can't have the robots, they form a copyright free design that's basically Voltron because I just said the name Voltron"
>>
>>155691371
I liked how he and Brock bonded over their past military experience. The way these characters can be so casual is just fun and done so naturally it makes you feel like it's something akin to Seinfield or other live-action programs rather than a cartoon that's loosely based on another cartoon that was itself on classic radio dramas.

I think what the anons are getting confused about is the little bonus segment that was posted online after Rusty passes out from glee, which teased the shift to New York in the then upcoming season.
>>
>>155692341
yeah the one where it was an entire episode was weird, weirdly paced, buried the lede.. I think season 6 was a lot better. it got me thinking the show was gonna be great going forward. alas, t'was the last..
come to think of it, even the episodes that have my favorite parts, also tend to have something stupid. like the one where Rick totally no-sells the Twilight Zone devil shop, but then at the end they just play loud gangsta rap and get roided up and beat up everyone the writer is angry at? who OK'd that sequence?
>>
>>155692477
The season 1 episode with Satan was kind of amusing, since at least that was before Rick's whole shtick was "I'm self-aware but also going to play everything like a normal cartoon character". He would call out things like Satan running a shop, but wasn't laying the commentary on thicker than someone pouring a bucket of syrup on their pancakes
>>
>>155692653
exactly. It's a lot of highs and lows.
Then again I'm also an unabashed lover of the entire exchange with the psychiatrist at the end of 'pickle rick', both sides of it equally, so my taste does not much line up with /co/'s. In any case, Venture Bros has very, very few moments that didn't hit, and most of them (to me) involve Sgt. Hatred

I think Hatred got a lot better once he joined the main cast. Before, it was just "haha, wacky pedo dude" not unlike Herbert from Family Guy. Once he got to be more than just that, helping him feel like a fleshed out character instead of one-note.

see I kinda feel the opposite, but it's fine
mainly it's just the sorta glossing over the gay part, ignoring that it's normal for an older man to be into teen girls. and also, y'know, that it's never okay to molest anyone, regardless of age, the far, far greater problem with his uncontrollable, serum-induced urges.
>>
I choose to believe that the plan with Sirena was revealing she got pregnant with Dean's kids: the next Venture twins
>>
>>155692797
To clarify, I don't mean a 10-year timeskip in the show, just that's when it would come out.
>>
>>155677478
season1 is rough, but you appreciate it more after you have seen it all
Season 5 just gets shit for how long it took and the weird pacing vs the masterpiece of season 4 which almost killed them making it. I love season 5 there is not a bad season of the show. Go team venture
>>
>>155678143
>ary’s idea of Satanism, was a metaphor for individualism and rising above societal norms. But then crazies with ray guns started entering the picture and actually believing in all of it and he kind of just went along with it. He and Jonas were the only two guys who thought the whole thing was just funny.
Incorrect Crowley was in the old guild none of this shit is new. OSI is one half of the old guild other half is New Guild you know which would be Majures guild. Col Venture lead the old one you see this during ORB. Anyone in the new guild is a charlatan though who stole the power which is why Dean is the rightful heir and Bowey knew it so he had it rightfully transferred to him. There have always been things the normies cant understand
>>
>>155692899
Pretty sure Hatred wasn't gay, just made into a freak by the serum, which I get some people felt kind of cheated him some of his redemption, but then again it'd be near-impossible to make an honest to goodness pedo sympathetic without a lot of bullshit like "oh, he never actually molested anybody, always failed to, and only watched legally questionable content online that may not actually fall into the category of CP"
Still, certainly ballsy given shows like FG or SP just use similar characters as a joke and only manage to be amusing by the sheer audacity of their character traits.

Princess Tinyfeet should have stuck with ol' Hatred, he was a stand-up guy. I was so disappointed when Monarch and Dr Girlfriend's story about her wanting him to try kinkier shit with her turned out to be fake.
>>
>>155694483
Was it fake? The way things played out, that seemed to be the truth, but she was definitely done with Hatred's crap, either not wanting to be a conduit for his urges, or not fulfilling her needs which seemed like the case with how he treats her during the prom.
>>
>>155694519
Hmm it wasn't very well told since she never.. talked.. but when she just disappeared again without saying anything, to me it felt like they had just manufactured that to get past him. Like, she never stopped looking distressed, and was gagged the whole time, which.. I mean yeah he should have checked in with her, but he seemed to be treating her really well at the prom, from where I was sitting. at least, trying. We know he's a people-pleaser, he was amazing at trying to be Doc's friend just to piss off Monarch

Triana was voiced by Doc Hammer's wife. She got written out when they got divorced. Nothing was really lost.

VB reminds me of Avatar in some respects with how much glazing people give it. It's a good show, don't get me wrong, but I find it a bit overrated. I don't think it even cracks the top 20 in my ranking of [as] shows
>>
>>155695108
blame the shittiness of everything else making this look better
in an ideal world, the world we were building in the 90s, shows like this would be a dime a dozen. But we let people tear that world down and take it away. so of course the more UNIQUE shows feel INCREDIBLE even if they're not necessarily the absolute best. They're probably the best at the unique things they do, since there's no competition.

St. Cloud is one of the funniest characters on the show for me. I love the rivalry between him and Billy that absolutely nobody except maybe Pete cares about at all and that everyone else thinks he's a creepy retard. Also his voice is funny.

Making references to amuse yourself rather than to show off how cool and geeky you are to other nerds doesn't suck or feel like you're bragging about your taste in media
>>
>>155682416
Maybe controversial but i thought the first season was genuinely really good and a breathe of fresh air in the time it aired but the show got up its own ass in s2 and it's been downhill ever since. I mean i stopped watching but i heard it got better but i really don't care anymore.
>>
>>155677478

Season 1 is truer to the original premise of "Johnny Quest if old and jaded." The art style and story beats line up with the source material which is old cartoon and comic pulp adventure of the 60's. I prefer the middle seasons where it hit a great balance of satire while doing their own thing. The series has always been solid but the later seasons it moved away from satire of that era and just became it's own thing (which is great in it's own right.)
