So I know he's from the Soviet Union but I can't find anything pointing to where, as in which modern country he's be from. Has that ever been established?

If it has I kinda wish it wouldn't be a boring answer like Russia or Ukraine, it would be more fun if he was from one of the smaller splinter states, like Estonia or Moldova.
