Recently rewatched The Secret of NIMH and was surprised by how naturally most of the cast speaks, without any exaggerated “cartoon voice.” They were all serious actors, so it tracks, but it’s still an unquestionably great performance.
Compare that to Marvel’s What If?, where the characters are literally voiced by the actors who play them and yet, a lot of it falls flat.
So what makes naturalistic voice acting work in one case but not the other?

Celebrity voice actors are giving their lines over the phone and dont care.

I doubt any of the actors in NIMH cared deeply about its source material, but they all gave A+ performances.
