rich people are the antidote to aristocracy. We used to have monarchs and peasants, then the mercantile class fixed it. and people (with monarchs suspiciously whispering into their ears) immediately started reeing about it. how DARE they rise about peasantry?

>England exhibits the most remarkable phaenomenon in the universe in the contrast between the profligacy of it’s government and the probity of it’s citizens. and accordingly it is now exhibiting an example of the truth of the maxim that virtue & interest are inseparable. it ends, as might have been expected, in the ruin of it’s people. but this ruin will fall heaviest, as it ought to fall, on that hereditary aristocracy which has for generations been preparing the catastrophe. I hope we shall take warning from the example and crush in it’s birth the aristocracy of our monied corporations which dare already to challenge our government to a trial of strength, and to bid defiance to the laws of their country.

I know it’s kind of trite to point out that Jefferson had slaves, but the guy regardless was for all intents and purposes the equivalent of a ‘landed gentry’ in Britain; no title but still owning a reasonable chunk of land. It just seems like Orwell was right in that every revolution is started by sharp-elbowed middle-class people who simply become the new upper class. Then again maybe such a system is the best we can do because when lower-class people do it they tend to rally around the most powerful and charismatic person and declare him king because all they want is bread and circuses.

Why did the corporations want to blow up the bio domes again?
>>
>>155693266
Haven’t seen the movie but I’m assuming it’s to tighten margins.
As for the topic of ‘70s dystopian sci-fi, most of them seem to focus on a government as at the time government corruption and overreach were seen as the great ill of the time, it wasn’t really until the ‘80s when corporations were seen as the great evil and we got things like Robocop and Cyberpunk. It’s not to say corporations weren’t depicted in the ‘70s it’s more that they were just careless rather than malicious.
>>
>>155693348
I've noticed this about 60s counterculture myself. Politicians were the great rich evil of the anti-war hippie era and you can barely find many protest songs that were explicitly about corporations. I guess those super high tax rates turned down the ire a bit

So was the ending of Onions Green completely hopeless because the state of the world had no other recourse or would the truth getting out actually cause enough outrage to change anything?

considering that a chocolate company has ruled that water is not a right, yeah its not exactly an impossible position
and no one actually says "corporation bad" without further nuance, its usually "we shouldnt allow corporations to destroy the amazon rainforest and poison our water supply" from which "corporation bad" is simply an inference from corporations being able to commit crimes on a mass scale few individuals ever could

S*ya products are connected to estrogen and regarded as a r*ddit/progressive thing. Onions on the other hand became a meme due to /fit/ broscience regarding them as testosterone enhancers. So once upon a time a 4chan moderator posted his stupid, odd-coloured, gimmicky keyboard on /g/. He got laughed at and called a s*y boy. The moderator got so butthurt that he introduced the word s*y into the site's word filter and had it changed automatically into onions.
>>
>>155697415
Yeah, well, I don't really care about accusations as much as what they're actually doing.
>>
>>155697415
In fact, friggin Jefferson himself was accused of being the Antichrist because he wrote a Bible which omitted all of Jesus’s miracles.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Jefferson_Bible
>>
>>155697430
How? And why?
>>
>>155697469
Do you how/why Jefferson did that or how/why they accused him of being the Anticrisp because of it?
>>
>>155697469
Because Jefferson was a deist/agnostic and was one of the key reasons why the church and state were declared separate in the constitution. Which was a very unorthodox view at the time to say the least.
>>
>>155697814
>>155697430
Also I forgot to add an ‘among other reasons’ to that post because he never actually published said bible, though his views weren’t exactly a secret.
>>
>>155693610
I think its because those corporations had built up a lot of good will via advertising during the 40s and 50s, along with them not having quite the stranglehold on politicians and all aspects of life like they would by the 80s. People were made to be scared of the Rockefellers because they would have been rich POLITICIANS instead of being RICH politicians if you get what I meant. People still assumed the government was strong enough to make businesses bend the knee and didn't really consider that it was the rich men up top who needed to be disciplined.
>>
>>155697417
It was more that s*y- was becoming an overused forced meme, so it got word filtered. Back in the moot era, we had plenty of word filters to keep people from sounding like complete morons with whatever the meme of the moment was. s*y to onion has never been turned off because the bigger boards still won't let go of a nearly decade old joke.
>>
>>155694802
Biosphere collapse in SG meant more that pollution and over-industrialization basically killed off the bottom of the food chain, which results in the starvation and death of everything up the food chain. It was literally impossible to feed everyone because there was no way to produce grains and livestock and any meaningful numbers. Remember; the beginning of the revelation that Green was made of people was that it turned out that it was impossible for plankton (which the public was told Green was made of) to grow anymore. If plankton can't grow, that means the entire ocean's ecosystems fall apart.
>>
>>155698097
I think one thing worth bearing in mind about back then was that companies were seen as making things that were revolutionary and life-changing. There was an interesting article I read saying how we haven’t really had a new must-have white good come out for decades now. Everyone in the west now has a washing machine, fridge/freezer, dishwasher, vacuum cleaner, television and so on, but back then these things were new and only just becoming affordable to working people, heck some people alive today didn’t grow up with indoor plumbing. Nowadays all those things are considered basic necessities and if like a lot of young people today you live with your parents then not something you’d go out and buy or aspire to purchase like boomers did.
Of course there was some criticism of the consumer culture and the companies behind it but for the most part people were thrilled at being able to buy a newer, shinier fridge or car.

NTA but in the original novel (Make Room! Make Room!) the S*ylent Green is literally just s*ya beans and lentils, and the general plot is just ‘everything is shit and there are too many people (350 million Americans is considered too many in 1966)’.
>>
>>155689107
never
>>
>>155698390
True; the movie added the eco-collapse and cannibalism angles because pollution had become a hot button topic by the 70s instead of just over-population. Honestly, the cannibalism part was probably added because "Things are going to get so bad, you'll have to eat beans instead of meat!" isn't going to scare people the way "Things are going to get so bad, you'll have to eat OTHER HUMANS!" does.

>Robocop
First movie: the company and its CEO are great, it's the stupid retarded cocaine abusing upstarts that are ruining MY perfect company that's just trying to keep people safe, where man is better than machine
Second movie: the CEO was actually Hitler and Omni Consumer Products is literally Nazi Germany, don't think too hard about it or how they don't actually do anything except for the evil middle manager again, also it's actually just a plot about drug dealers being awful people, and we have some time filling to explain why jesus with a gun, I mean robocop, didn't simply win

I'd say it's a general media trend that Sci-Fi was a part of, which got worse in the 21st century.
When you think of Battlestar Galactica, Lost, the Walking Dead and Game of Thrones, you don't think "Land of the happily ever afters". It's also why a lot of kiddie shows that end with "And then they all... hugged and sang a song!" get flak, because current writers consume current things so don't know how to resolve bad scenarios by not making them existential to begin with.
For another example of sadness, if you look at Pixar, from their very first movie, Toy Story, they have a very strong depression that is spoken throughout every work. They refer to death, loss, disability, inadequacy, stress, torture, injury, existential dread. They occasionally touch upon workplace hierarchy but not as viscerally and often depict fighting it (Mr Incredible and Sully attack and beat up their bosses). Their works are not very child orientated, and in my opinion, they'd prefer an adult audience.

Star Trek was generic Sci-Fantasy with more positivity than the original Twilight Zone. It only became darker the further it was changed by the '90s and its need to make authorial political statements.

Blame guys like Harlan Ellison. He and the other "Speculative Fiction" crowd were tired of science fiction basically being Buck Rogers and The Jetsons; where humanity is just owed all of existence and get to have it because of Space Manifest Destiny. Read SF in the 30s, 40s, and 50s and you rarely see pessimistic futures that aren't the fault of some evil Other.

I can start counting scifi authors at Wells without feeling too bad, and When the Sleeper Awakes is 19th century.
>>
>>155698687
I think it's certainly an example of the adaptation exceeding the source material, if only for memorability.
>>
>>155699065
Pre-30s SF is still primarily about the wonder of even doing scientific stuff. The SpecFic authors were specifically rebelling against the public's notion of SciFi, which was definitely shaped by the pulp magazines of the time.

>the company and its CEO are great
The CEO watches a man get shot to death like nothing by a metal gear, which he was perfectly willing to fund for urban use.
>>
>>155698712
The cyberpunk commercials are also meant to give you an idea of how dehumanizing and product-over-people OCP already is.
>>
>>155698712
Given how unsubtle Robocop is about most of its messages, it's not surprising most people misinterpret the character of OCP's CEO in the first film because it's one of the few subtle bits of characterization. "The Old Man" is an uncaring sociopath. It's not even something hidden. His response to an incompetent product demonstration resulting in an OCP executive is to berate to project head then approve someone else's pitch. The stupid, retarded, cocaine-abusing upstart has a more human reaction than him, and he uses the situation to gain approval for his personal project. People overlook it because Dan O'Herlihy looks and sounds like a kindly grandpa and that's the point; the events of Robocop aren't indicative of anything corrupting OCP, they're the company behaving normally.

As other anon pointed out, you see a fair amount of sociological dystopias ala Wells. People forget for instance that Buck Rogers was originally a post-apocalyptic.
You see a lot of forced-collapse stories in /co/ media in the form of atomic scare after WWII though as you point out not so much with the making you own bed side of things until the new wave had gone more mainstream, esp. on the environmental front.

In practical means, the separation of church and state was to limit the religious quarrels that had several Christian denominations flee to the Thirteen Colonies. It's why it's vastly different (and superior) to the separation of church and state of Europe. American secularism was built with religion in mind rather than in spite of it.

Sc fi is a genre about making you think when its at its peak. You are more likely to think from negativity than positivity
