I'm not going to pretend that trying to portray Scarlet Witch and Quicksilver as visible people of color was responsible for the fizzling of the Orlando run. Still I feel like they were playing a weird game here of trying to simultaneously do MCU synergy (mostly with the people around Wanda, like Darcy and Agatha) while also pandering to the people who insist that the MCU is racist for casting a white woman as Wanda.Anyone who knows the comics knows that it makes no sense for Wanda to be a person of color when she is supposed to look like she could be a white American. Orlando knows this too, but it seems like he and/or his editor decided that it would be a show of support for the people who identify with them being Romani, but I think it drove a wedge between fans and created the idea that fans of movie Wanda should look elsewhere.Granted I don't envy Orlando for having to deal with so many different types of toxic fans, of which MCU Wanda also has plenty.One odd thing that comes from the characters having so many different origins is that their origins as mutants has almost gotten lost, because people retroactively think they were persecuted for being Romani, when this origin did not exist for 15+ years and the whole point of the characters is that they were the first examples of mutants who turned against humans because of the way they were treated.
