>What do you mean "What else is there?" We both hated each other and the idea of this arranged marriage until just a few minutes ago when we found out we had a mutual attraction. And anyway, the only reason we're getting married at all is as a political play to unify our kingdoms, which has been in the works for years and can't be stopped at this point, so we might as well get it over with, enjoy banging each other for a few years, and pump out an heir before you hit the wall and I go back to screwing the chamber maids. Was that really so hard?
You know it's funny that Odette's question is never properly explored or even used as a vehicle for Derek's character development. You'd think he would've immediately tried to start thinking of how he'd gotten to know Odette while they were growing up after she and her father left but he just sort of sulks. Derek ends up finding Odette in the first place by total happenstance; imagine if Swan Lake was like her dead mom's favorite place and Derek remembered her mentioning that and he's like "well it wouldn't hurt to check". That would've at least been something. Anyway it's funny how irrelevant the question was and when you'd think it'd be the perfect time to come back, Derek just totally beefs it and reveals he really doesn't know Odette and nearly gets her killed. He's so lucky an evil wizard showed up and Odette decided to lower her standards.
>>155703059>Lower her standards>Odette is settling for a prince (future king of their unified kingdoms)
>>155703235You know that reminds me that Odette should actually be queen of her kingdom since her father died and she was his heir, and since she and Derek get married at the end that'd make him a prince consort first.
>>155703034>>155703059>What else is thereBecause the question is retarded. They're both wealthy, heirs to a kingdom, and they're both attractive and relatively "good" people. And their marriage would combine their kingdoms. It's romanticizing romance itself.Hell, Hunchback of Notre Dame undermines this, that ugly people aren't loved, and Disney had to retcon that and make amends in the second movie. So yes, looks are a BIG part of it.Evey Princess movie revolves around attractive people. In this case, trying to justify something deeper than that, when in reality there isn't.>He's so lucky an evil wizard showed up and Odette decided to lower her standards. How much of a higher standard can you go from wealthy princeling (who is relatively morally good as is portrayed, albeit a bit simple)? It's a problem with the princess trope, you're already at the tippy-top of the world or even dating world.
>>155703235Roastie moment.
>>155703307Ok but this is a story where you're asked to pretend that monarchs are normal human beings capable of normal emotions and wants.>How much of a higher standard can you go from wealthy princeling (who is relatively morally good as is portrayed, albeit a bit simple)?A wealthy princeling who is interested in her as a person and hasn't spent like fifteen years openly disliking her.>but that's not realistic!Yeah and she turns into a swan.>but she has no other choice!Maybe. Even though I stick by my "Odette lowered her standards" take I thought it was also clear that she was still rooting for Derek and was disappointed that he couldn't think of anything to say.
>>155703034>What else is thereShe just wanted him to talk sweet nothings to her, like "your hair is brilliant as the morning sun" and "your lips red as ripe apples" or whatever a guy is supposed to say to girl while complimenting her looks.Arguably, Derek's caveman "you pretty" was a poor way of saying he likes her because of her looks.Plus there's the basic female vanity, where she wants to be complimented for things besides her looks. On that part Derek should have just started bullshitting her.
>>155703034Would have been much less of a hassle if he just married Princess Brunhilda from Stuttgart.
lowering one's standards means lowering what THEY wanted in a relationship as a compromise
>>155703405So Odette makes herself ugly as a test?
>>155703034I mean it coulda been worse. He at least gets to rise to the occasion. This was frozen or something he'd suddenly become the badguy for no raisin because subversion. Dude learns to be a bit less shallow is pretty kid gloves.
>>155703460>Would you still love me if I was a swan?
>>155703425>Would you fuck me if I was a swan?
>>155703486>Would you still love me if I were a begger?
>>155703235Correct. She was holding out for a demigod or maybe a prince made of pure gold
>>155703059Fairy God parents help princesses find true love, wizards help princes trauma bond
>>155703565>Would you still love me if I was a badger?
>>155703649>wizards help princes trauma bondAs seen in People of the Black Circle.
>>155703667>Would you still love me if I was a ledger?
it's weird hearing people say true love was always a made up story, when in reality, people just didn't have that much to disagree over back then. They didn't have politics, and certainly a woman's opinion wasn't gonna be factored in. They didn't have domestic shit like the husband annoying the wife by leaving the house in a certain condition, because it was her house, she ruled it and decided its state of cleanliness or whatever. People stayed out of each other's way and shared beds with their entire families and any guests. everything was easy mode.shit started getting weird with victorians, and you had husbands like, divorcing their wives because they only just now discovered pubes exist.
>>155704111that is a lot of words to just say you're an incellol
>>155704111>divorcing their wives because they only just now discovered pubes exist.Bunch of fags sounds like.
>>155703725>Would you still love me if I were in cursive?
>>155704458>Would you still love me if I were immersive?
>>155704111>people just didn't have that much to disagree over back then
Yes because Disney may as well release an animated movie in 2030 called "Girlboss and the Cuck"
>>155704810consume trash be served trash
>>155703387Yeah, flattering her looks is important. But women want to know if you like something outside of her looks. Because, as we all know. We'll find another prettier woman who'll have something she can't compete with. It's a way of assuring her that he'll stay around and invest in her beyond being a hot piece of ass. If she want's the dick or has low self esteem or is unsure of her looks or he's handsome(thus him lusting for her puts her on the level of women she thinks he should be with)she'll fuck said guy especially if he's attractive, she's horny, she knows ihe'll fuck her brains out+will keep a secret. Dating is about two people finding common ground sussing each other out and maybe fucking to see if things workout in bed. However,"Dating" is about finding fuckfriends >>155703460Frozen is classical coastal liberal feminst slop. Loser foids lionizing the fact that they are no man's first choice in looks and utter failures when it comes to being a good person, a good woman, wife or even fuckbuddy. The prince MUST be evil and murderous!!Wait a tic..Ugh I kept viewing the evil prince thing as typical anti-natalist antirelationship antihetero subversion. When it might be even more simple. He's the kind of guy who ends up being the male lead in those spicy novels. However they doubled and trippled down on that lesbian incest thing in marketing and it blew up in their face. They had everything they needed to push the guy being villain with heart of gold in other material and design this story where he set everything up with a fake murder plot to save anna and repair elsa's...name in a second movie. The evil scheming hans and elsa fanfiction alone would have sold frozen merch for years
>>155704917It's the consumers fault marketing. Anon, everyone knows their bankrolled by venture capitalists who have an agenda to push. They can, they used to make money no matter what bullshit they created and they had the connections to destroy better alternatives.
>>155703377>to pretend that monarchs are normal human beings capable of normal emotions and wants. They're not normal people though.>A wealthy princeling who is interested in her as a person and hasn't spent like fifteen years openly disliking her.Because it was children disinterested in sex, relationships, and marriage, until the hormones kicked in.>Yeah and she turns into a swan. But the question is.>I thought it was also clear that she was still rooting for Derek and was disappointed that he couldn't think of anything to say.Maybe not everyone is a poetic bard with a silver tongue. Derek at least kind of represents a more realistic response from a monarchy royalty who doesn't have to deal with much. Even then, I think it's just dancing around the issue that having looks and a decent moral compass is really all you need for a relationship, since the finances are already taken care of.>Even though I stick by my "Odette lowered her standards"Yeah, I don't, because she sure as shit wasn't going to go the Shrek route and marry someone lesser than her own position. And even then Derek came off as a classical naive chivalry type. If anything, it was shown Derek had a plethora of options with the literal harem girls on display and still chose Odette, so there was some kind of kinship he probably felt but couldn't put into words. Then he goes out of his way to try and save her as well, despite not being a poet with his words. His actions superseded that, and that he was a relatively good person as well. The reality is that looks really do matter for the most part he's correct, she wanted him to dance around it for her as she played the innocent about it.
>>155704810That's basically all the Princess tropes there are. I have yet to see a Princess going out of her way after a "Shrek", which would be an interesting approach.(No, I don't mean SHREK'S plot, I mean she's genuinely interested in someone not traditionally attractive or unattractive and going out of her way to pursue them)
>>155705349Yeah Aladdin being a poor street rat is well and good but he had those roguish charms
>>155705464Aladdin is like the only good looking guy in the movies. Then Aladdin larped as a prince for 1/3rd of the story. And he was solely the only person trying to save her, so it's really not a Shrek type story. I'm talking about unattractive as well, not just lower socio-economic status.Again, it just highlights looks are everything in these types of princess stories.Shrek is maybe the only breakaway from that branch.
I don't think the Shrek analogy really works because Fiona was actually an ugly ogre too.
>>155705674She was cursed to be an ogre, she was originally human. And you're right, she could at least partially identify with Shrek, but she lived in both worlds.
Hotel Transylvania. You want Hotel Transylvania.
