I’ve actually heard cases before where cartoon creators of the past were actually super unaware of how popular their own shows were because that information didn’t really reach them unless it super important to the network. I remember an interview with (I think) the voice actors of Ed, Edd, n Eddy where they talked about not actually being able to watch the show air for some time because it wasn’t running in Canada yet. My point is that Carl had every reason to think his show wasn’t doing well when CN made it seem that way, and he couldn’t see any confirmation on how many people were loving the show.
