>Sonic Fandom
Sonic fandom never made sense to me. The IP is 99% trash. And it's old and irrelevant and stuck in the 90s. There's nothing wrong with enjoying something childish and nostalgic once in a while, but why make liking this cruddy old child thing your whole identity? Especially when you know how much of a pathetic loser it makes you look?
>>155775374 I'll do the best I can to explain it. I can't speak for everyone though. Here's the thing: you don't ever truly stop liking something just because you get older. There have been bad games but that doesn't suddenly make everything of Sonic terrible. To this day I would consider myself a big fan, I still pay attention for anything new coming out, I watch the shows, read the comics, buy figures and statues etc.Sonic has always been a good marketing property and it shows how many people watched the sonic movies. People don't hate Sonic, they hate the company that made bad calls. But to answer the question why so many people love Sonic is because his entire franchise behind himself, other characters and lore is so ambiguous and vague there's a lot of imagination and speculation you can add into it. It was very vague about a lot of stuff that made people think about what was going on when playing the original games. On the other side of things SEGA does not take any stances so it makes it harder to calm parts of the fan base down. This includes the people who have autism, political activists, religion, perverts, etc. If Sonic would say something like "Free Palestine" in a trans flag colored shirt, that would make a good chunk of the fan base become disgusted but make the other fans worse. This is why the fans are so widely different. It's culture within it's own fan base. You only see the bad because on the Internet everything can be shown to you and you assume it's all bad like how I used to think everyone was a Twitter user outside but in actuality majority of people outside think Twitter people are insane and that goes for Sonic fans.I'm 41, I'm at the age I don't really care what people think about me being a fan of something. I have never been rejected by a woman for my sonic or other collections I have. The only people who gave me shit was guys who thought they had to like what everyone else was liking.
>>155775562>you don't ever truly stop liking something just because you get olderEhhhhhhhhhhhh. I can't say I revisit the really, really childish stuff I liked as a child all that often. I used to love Muppet Babies but I don't have any desire to go back to it. I definitely feel the same way about Sonic. It isn't like something like X-Men, which I liked when I was 10. But it also grew up a little and made some content that was decent enough to appeal to me as an adult. Sonic has pretty much the same. If anything, Sonic has aimed even younger and younger as its aged. Which is fine, not everything has to be aged up to appeal to me. I'm perfectly fine leaving Sonic in the past.
>>155775374Donât underestimate the power of autism.
>>155775611I mean I get your point but I don't compare sonic as the same level as muppet babies that seems ridiculous considering that there is a sonic baby like show for children coming out soon for ages 3-5.I don't need everything to be "mature" to like. That's just ridiculous to me. It's a cartoon character that goes on adventures and stops a evil scientist from doing stuff. Why does it have to constantly be some sort of gritty thing to you?I feel like you don't understand geek culture at all.
>>155775637Do you know where you are?
>>155775679>Why does it have to constantly be some sort of gritty thing to you? That's the point. It doesn't. It needs to be for ages 3-5 just like it is. I just don't want anything to do with it. And I don't want to want anything to do with it.
>>155775374For myself I just enjoy the bits I like, like some people have this idea that being a fan of something is an all-or-nothing affair, which most people arenât. As long as it doesnât become your personality you can enjoy pretty much anything, is it childish? Some of it is and some of it pretends otherwise but if I feel like turning my brain off and playing some Crossworlds or watching an episode of Adventures of Sonic the Hedgehog, why not?
>>155775711No child 3-5 can beat a the classic games you're just being a fucking moron
>>155775711So you donât want anything to do with it, I got that right?
>>155775715>some people have this idea that being a fan of something is an all-or-nothing affairZoomers started that mentality on social media.
>>155775715Pic related should be about Kirby too.
>>155775715That is fair, but would you really consider yourself a "Sonic fan"? The people I'm referring to are the ones who turn it into their lifestyles. They draw fan art, create stories of it, they keep up with new cartoons and games, they read the official comics for children. Why dedicate so much of your personality and identity to an IP for children well past your expiration date? There's a lot of people that lurk here that do it with other similar franchises as well (the dumb horse show, for example). I can see someone being perpetually stuck in the mind of a 13 year old. Arrested development is a thing. But an 7 year old? That's really concerning. Do people like that have the ability to take care of themselves or are they still being cared for by 60 year old parents who themselves are reaching the point of needing care? It's a sad thing to think about.tldr: What is the endgame for this type of person?
>>155775750I'm confused here, if we like something why wouldn't we want to enjoy said stuff involving the character?I feel like you're some sort of tourist, did you get lost from going to /b/ or something? Do you know what board you're on?
>>155775721I got the 3-5 age from this post>>155775679I have no idea who the target audience for this crap is these days. In the 90s, it was 10 year olds. But I get the sense that it's much younger now. It's a whole lot more cutesy-poo than it was in the 1990s.
I like sonic only for the characters and settingTrash games trash cartoonsMovies are fine
>>155775750>Guys look how mature I am!You're on comics and cartoon board.
>>155775761No
>>155775759What are you even babbling about? Are you okay?
>>155775762I wouldn't describe myself as mature, I still read comic books. But I do have a job, a family, and make enough money to support all that. What I'm asking is, do the people stuck in permanent emotional gradeschool limbo also have this ability? And if not, what is going to happen to them?
>>155775771I think I've been pretty clear. You're capable of reading.
>>155775374Anon, what board are you on?
>>155775775Again what does them having a job or not have to do with Sonic exactly? There are people who are on this very board who are exactly how you described them and they don't like Sonic either. So what is your point? You seem really focused on Sonic itself when those people that you explained just so happen to like Sonic.I love Sonic, I have my own home and stuff and so do a lot of other people.
>>155775750I mean, I have a shit-tonne of AoStH cels, own a bunch of the games and even draw some of the characters, but at the same time if you knew me in real life it wouldnât even occur to you that I even knew Sonic (the only public thing I have is a sticker on my water bottle). You can say Iâm a fan whoâs hiding his power level, but thatâs not the same as what youâre talking about. The other thing is that Sonic as a design is very strong, that I feel does a lot of the heavy lifting for both the franchise and the fandom, Iâve heard one person describe it as punk Mickey Mouse and Iâd agree, itâs got that timeless appeal, I know Disney Adults are cringe but is someone with a Mickey Mouse keychain or a shirt with Donald Duck or Bugs Bunny cringe? Those properties could be considered âfor babiesâ too if youâre being ungenerous. I donât know, I think it depends on how seriously a person takes a subject, I donât really care if Sonic has a comic with crying lesbians or a movie with fart jokes because itâs not my ideology. Does that make sense?
>>155775787The autism board, I'm aware.
>>155775784You're connecting invisible dots that can be applied to literally any fan base.
>>155775797Okay, just checking
>>155775793Looney Tunes used to be the South Park for adults.
>>155775793How many people are in the "Bugs Bunny" fandom, though? I don't think many are creating original stories or creating weird sameface characters about Bugs and the other Looney Tunes. There's something about Sonic that draws a certain type of person in a way that Bugs Bunny and Mickey Mouse simply don't.
>>155775850Dude yes there are. What the fuck are you talking about?
>>155775850You must be shit posting or generally retarded if you think there isn't fucked up shit people draw or write about those franchises.
>>155775854There might be a handful. I've never come across a single example, personally. But it would be a lie to say that it's anywhere near the same level.
>>155775868Has it ever occured to you that maybe just maybe you deliberately ignore everything around you?
>>155775880If there are people drawing OCs of Bugs Bunny and creating dramatic stories involving Bugs and his friends, those people are on the same level as Sonic fans. Regardless, for every 1 person who does Bugs Bunny porn, there's 100 examples of Sonic porn. I guarantee it.
>>155775888Sonic is way popular than looney tunes these days so your example kinda falls flat in that regard. You seem very obsessed about the need to feel "mature" but at the same time saying random shit you have no idea about. You must be shit posting.
>>155775900>your exampleIt was your example.
>>155775914No I was pointing out that all fan bases has lewd things. The fact I have to explain to you the reason why you're so obsessed thinking sonic is the only fan base that is like that proves how I'll informed you are.
>>155775922So you would agree that there are far, far fewer people jerking off to badly drawn images of Bugs Bunny than there are of Sonic? At least we have that clear. Not that it matters, people jerking off to Bugs Bunny and Sonic are the same type of misfit.
>>155775793Sonic fans definitely have a reputation for being fucked-up and weird, much more than other fan bases. It's not the largest fan base on the internet, but it is definitely thought of as being the strangest.
>>155775935Well last time I checked no one is concerned if you dislike something they're into. I'm not going to suddenly dislike something because it's not considered cool. Everything I do was not considered cool in the 90s. I'm in my 40s, why would I care if people didn't like what I'm into? Everyone who actually has a life is too busy with their own.I would counter argue and say you're autistic for being obsessed with hating Sonic and constantly asking "why?" and not asking yourself if you're just as bad as the people you are "concerned" about. You have made zero points and zero reasons why I should suddenly stop being a Sonic fan. The fact you think a kid between 3-5 can even beat a sonic game proves you never touched a sonic game not beaten one in your life.
>>155775850Well it does exist but as you said it isnât as common as Sonic, why Sonic though? Because he appears in dramatic games and comics which in turn gives more avenues for people to write drama, whereas in Looney Tunes itâs all comedy shorts (unless itâs Loonatics Unleashed - but we donât talk about that). Comedy is harder for people to write and âput themselves intoâ for want of a better term, as such you have a larger Sonic fancontent crowd. However itâs not as though no-one is drawing slash art of Bugs and Daffy or making memes or comics out of Mickey Mouse, it just manifests itself differently for reasons Iâve explained.
>>155775970>obsessed with hating SonicI assure you, I have no emotions in regards to Sonic one way or another. I'm just responding to this thread. I didn't create it.
>>155775968It's because social media pulls up drawings kids made and it stuck.
>>155775935Well IIRC Judy Hopps from Zootopia has the most content on Rule34 or e621 or whatever, it shouldnât surprise you too much that similar people jerk it to Rouge the Bat
>>155775985Then fuck off, there's no point of you being here.
>>155775989Would you say Sonic fans are just furries, then? It's just a sexual thing?
>>155776003Well, at this point I've taken over the thread with all my questions and I've managed to piss off every Sonic autist that lurks /co/, so I might as well get comfortable.
>>155776006For some, yes, for others, no. At this point I have to ask if youâre just trolling to keep a thread going or if youâre genuinely expecting someone to say âYes I love Sonic because Iâm a gay retard who poops himself at Wal-Martâ, like what do *you* think is the reason why people like Sonic or indeed anything?
>>155776015Thanks for proving you do actually have emotion towards this subject.
>>155776025> At this point I have to ask if youâre just trolling to keep a thread goingI'm enjoying having a conversation. It's devolving into people lashing out at me emotionally but that's fine. *sips coffee*
>>155776006Are you new on the Internet?
>>155776026Not even a little, I assure you. Tell me, why do my questions bother you so much? Is the term "autist" a sore spot for you?
>>155776033What makes you think your questions are bothering me?
>>155776039You do seem more than a little bit annoyed.
>>155776047I'm a naturally angry hateful person, this is just my default setting. If I was that annoyed I'd simply go to a different thread.
>>155776061That's unfortunate. I would hope delving into childish stuff would at least bring comfort to you.
>>155776068I never said it doesn't. You sure do like making assumptions about me.
>>155776081You said you're naturally angry and hateful. So then Sonic is the one thing that keeps you from being angry and hateful?
>>155776088No
>>155776097Well I will say this, you are definitely not the only Sonic fan that I've noticed who seems perpetually perturbed and angry all the time. The thing about basking yourself in the security blanket of nostalgia is, it's supposed to bring good feelings and not bad. I've noticed a similar thing about Star Wars fans. Most of them seem angry and hate Star Wars more than they like it. To the point where I have to ask, at what point do you stop calling yourself a fan? If the childish thing stops bringing joy then it doesn't seem to serve any purpose at all.
>>155776106I never said or implied anything you just said. I also have not said I'm currently indulging in anything of Sonic while having this low effort rage bait of a conversation.
>>155776115I promise I'm not rage baiting. You call yourself angry but I don't think you're that angry compared to many of the people I've engaged with on this board over the years. You said you were 40 so it might just be because you're old enough to know when to not lose it over some dopey anon just killing some time while editing some files for work.
>>155776147I said I'm in my 40s. Also being hateful and angry as a default doesn't mean I'm not aware that interacting with people who want to mock or disrespect me online would not actually impact my life outside of it. Your dislike for Sonic means absolutely nothing to me. I don't care if you don't like Sonic. I'm not here to convince anyone to like Sonic. Talking online to someone they like or dislike always ends up in a stalemate.I have never in my life started to dislike something because of what others have said. If it was up to everyone to tell me what I'm supposed to enjoy and dislike I'd end up in a empty home staring at a wall until I'm told I need to go work or have to complete some sort of task set to me by a woman.
>>155776192I don't have any dislike for Sonic. It could have been "Kissyfur" and my questions would have been the same. Though I doubt there's too many people in the Kissyfur online fan community.
Sonic the Hedgehog is the cooler version of Mickey Mouse, and Mickey himself has inherent coolness when allowed to be more than the face of a brand or the clubhouse show. These rubberhose cartoon animal mascots are meant to be for everyone.
>>155776209I don't even know what you're talking about or why you can't wrap your head around you don't have to understand why people enjoy something you don't. I don't ask the bronies why they were so obsessed about my little pony because it's none of my business and not my problem. Anything I consider to be like that, to me, just makes me look better in comparison. But I have never been judged for liking or collecting Sonic. I don't do my hobbies when I should be spending quality time with someone or need to do something. If you're seeing patterns in fanbases you need to also remind yourself that geeks were always like this. The stereotype of being a geek was always being "the weird kid" "the outcast", I think you've forgotten that major component.
>>155776248Kissyfur is a shitty old cartoon from the 80s that nobody remembers, don't worry about it. Lol.
>>155776270I just looked him up, I know I never watched this show but I do remember seeing the character before.
>>155776284It was on in 1986, around the same time Muppet Babies was on. It was no Muppet Babies.
>>155776300It probably wasn't on a channel I would typically watch.
>>155776327If you are American, it was apparently on NBC when this was the schedule:⢠8:00 AM: Kissyfur⢠8:30 AM: Adventures of the Gummi Bears⢠9:00 AM: The Smurfs⢠10:30 AM: It's Punky Brewster⢠11:00 AM: Alvin and the Chipmunks⢠11:30 AM: Foofur⢠12:00 PM: Lazer Tag Academy Apparently Kissyfur isn't even the worst crap that they played on that channel.
>>155776028Okay Iâll give you the benefit of the doubt and and try and answer the question:Sonic the Hedgehog is a 35 year old franchise primarily aimed at boys aged 7-13 or thereabouts, it covers several media formats including games, comics and cartoons. The games are the primary format and generally lead the franchise, most of them are average but for the above demographic theyâre fine and some of them are actually good and a few are pretty crap. Throughout those 35 years Sonic has kept up a fairly regular schedule of games and content which keeps peopleâs attention, this is in contrast to say Mega Man or Star Fox which fit a similar demographic. One of Sonicâs key strengths as a character is his strong visual design which combines anime and classic cartoon aesthetics; the original games having a world akin to Dragon Ball and Dr Slump starring an edgy Felix/Mickey. Story-wise the series veers either towards the younger or the older end of the demographic scale and as such has a sweet spot where it takes itself fairly seriously but isnât too complex to understand, this means that people can treat the stories as a joke or take them really seriously and write insane fanfics about them. Going back to the character design, not only are they visually very distinct but are easy enough to draw for the average artist, they follow fairly consistent design rules and that allows people to make their own OCâs that look like they fit with the other characters, as opposed to someone making a Marvel OC who would need to design and draw a realistically proportioned humanoid character who could just as easily belong to DC or the million other franchises populated by human beings (this is also why you get a lot of OCâs for franchises feat. Non-humans like horse show). So to conclude:>35 years old>Consistent releases>Multimedia>Multiple continuities>Pre-teen to teen writing>Distinct visual style>Famous>Shippers>Edgy kids>Horny teens>Nostalgic adults
>>155776328This is the same guy who cross dresses and let's his wife fuck other guys. I wouldn't take his opinion to heart.
>>155776345I only know 4 of those shows.
>>155776393Oh was that retarded shitposting not self evident to ignore this excuse for a human being?
>>155776345Now Iâm reminded of Barneyfag.
>>155776392Nice detailed replay, thank you.>>155776403I am a perfectly cromulent excuse for a human being, I think.
>>155776403No, I don't use Twitter anymore but I have encountered well known people say stupid shit on there before.
