It’s actually insane how one scene in an adaption can totally shatter an audience’s perception of a character. I’ve seen so many people claim Guy Gardner is all talk after he bitched out and shrank in front of John. Guy is literally the LAST person I would describe as all talk. If anything, he’s too prone to getting into fights. His most famous panels of all time involve him stepping up to Batman after Batman made the same accusation. No, it doesn’t matter that he got humiliated, being all talk means you refuse to fight after talking shit. There doesn’t exist a single panel of Guy backing down in a manner like he did in Lanterns (2026). Complete character assassination. Tom King should never be allowed to write Guy Gardner again, it’s crazy how he managed to find a way to write a scene with Guy behaving completely backwards.
>>
So I don't get it. Character assassination aside,
He's abandoning his team from Gunn's Superman, and leaving his post to a rogue Lantern just because he's afraid John will give him a construct noogie?
How exactly are they gonna accommodate for this in the next movie? Just pretend he never existed?
Or are they gonna acknowledge he's letting both his team and his corps down just because a black guy scared him? Cause that doesn't feel in line with the character Gunn depicted.
>>
>>155777077
>Tom King should never be allowed to write
fixed
didn't he do Guy pretty dirty in that Human Target mini too a while ago? i vaguely remember something really similar playing out with Hal telling Guy to fuck off or something

Crazy that we just have to accept this dreary miniseries that makes the Snyder movies look like sunshine and rainbows, and think of it as canon to Gunn's superman that was memed for being so hopeful and positive minded.
Guy serving as the direct link is particularly strange. He may have been a bit of a jerk in that movie but they went out of their way to depict him with a heart of gold.
>>
>>155777123
Anon, the actor was too expensive and Superman lost money. So the gotta accommodate.
I mean, they can pay the black guy in fried chicken and stolen TVs so it's a bargain.
>>
>>155777123
I’m guessing Guy will ignore John’s request for the most part and the line was meant more to explain why John is only on Earth for Lanterns TV show and the eventual Justice League movie.
>>
>>155777291
No way Nathan Fillion was too expensive
>>
>>155777314
>I’m guessing Guy will ignore John’s request for the most part
That would be funny cause John making Guy back down is pretty much the climax to his part of the show.
>>
>>155777077
My man, Guy got off reletivley light with the character assassination in this shit show. That being said, he absolutly would not have backed down from Stewart talking shit. But that's all these writers know how to do, shut down any conversation or conflict to create the illusion their pet characrer is right.
>>
>>155777148
OP here. So I hadn’t heard of this and just read the third issue where Guy is stalking Ice. Guy being a bit of a stalking creep feels sorta in line with his pre-Johns characterization, but folding to “Hal” showing up to give up the ring felt totally out of character in that era. I can’t recall a single instance of Guy folding to Hal like that, or being “afraid” of him in such a way that he’d buckle under Hal’s commands. The extent of his “fear” is more rooted in insecurity of being #2 and being perceived as a chump by everyone around him. Guy would have thrown hands with Hal to settle the problem.
>>
Since this is one of the note civil Lantern threads I've seen I might as well ask here.
Was this whole thing originally written with the intent of John becoming a yellow lantern?
It explains why the title of the show omits color. It explains why John and his family are so obsessed with fear and conquering fear and don't bring up willpower directly.
It explains why John used waterboarding (aka manipulation through fear) to torture Sinestro (the fear guy), so he could get a lantern Sinestro himself made (maybe a yellow one at some point in production?). It even ends with him scaring Guy off.
>>
>>155777416
I mean he should continue to watch earth. It’s not like John is going to go to the guardians.
>>
>>155777077
>>155777123

Keep in mind, none of this is going to be present in Man of Tomorrow.
>>
>>155777077
If anything Guy is smarter and more compassionate than normal. He cared enough to get Hal's uniform and ring. He chose not to get into a ringslinging competition that had been "devastated by a Green Lantern" in the past. The only one who got completely destroyed was John. Which is weird considering they actually killed Hal.

Idk I’m seeing so many people misinterpret his character. Apparently Guy has always been all talk now, despite it being antithetical to his character. Like complete 180 behavior.
>>155777436
> Since this is one of the note civil Lantern threads I've seen I might as well ask here.
Was this whole thing originally written with the intent of John becoming a yellow lantern?
From what I’ve heard from the writers, kinda. I think Mundy said the “John turning into a Yellow Lantern” legitimately did not come up as a possibility during the writing. They didn’t even think of it. However, Tom King said on the roundup that there is something “dark” about the lantern that may be followed up on. I think it’s going to be the DCU version of the Yellow Impurity. What that entails exactly is anyone’s guess.
>>155777644
It’s so weird, I hate it. The worst part is that John takes so many elements from Gardner, like beefing with Hal over the ring or using lantern equipment forged by Sinestro like Gardner did in the 90s. I want my Guy to be an asshole, but they’ve flanderized him to be diet-Booster Gold with his obsession over optics.
>>
>>155777743
Prove me wrong. Find me some comic sources of Guy backing down from a fight. And be honest with yourself, does the Gardner displayed in that scene seem like the type of eventually get a red lantern ring?

>>155777865
“That scene” being the Lanterns (2026) version* I should have clarified. So does the Gardner displayed in the Lanterns (2026) finale seem like he’d eventually get a red ring? And if so, then why?

Think about it from Guy's perspective, in this exact moment:
>John has Hal's ring, and is able to use it
>he also has a weird off-brand lantern
>Guy doesn't know where the fuck that came from
>it could be dangerous
>for all he knows it could make John more powerful than him
>Guy has already expressed to John that he put in work to rehabilitate Green Lantern's image after the Rushville shitshow
>which is where they are right now
Is Guy kind of a hothead? Sure. But is he a thoughtless dumbass willing to risk all those unknowns and a potential repeat of lanterns fucking up the same small town again for the sake of his pride? No. So he's going to report what he knows to the Guardians, and unless the writing in any future instalment in the story is beyond retarded, they're going to have questions about that lantern which are going to be pretty awkward for John to answer.
>>
>>155777077

>>
It's dumb no matter how you slice it, but I'm willing to accept that Guy is simply stepping back and waiting to see what John does, since they know each other and he knows than John is basically an okay guy.
Okay, I'm giving the writing a lot of leeway here. John did not demonstrate himself to be worthy of defending Earth at all.

Guy is a White man so that means he's both an evil oppressor and a weak coward. Enjoy the diversity, nerds!

Superman ends with Hawkgirl murdering a guy, Clark's values being mocked by every character, and his cousin calling him a pussy, his cousin then gets her own movie, where at the end of it she murders a guy and that is viewed as a heroic thing.

Gunn's Superman is totally in line with Lanterns, and that's a bad thing.
>>
>>155777570
Isn't MoT going to be the last Gunn's DCU movie? He'll probably make S3 of Peacemaker and that 4-episodes Waller series, but no movies.

This has literally never prevented Guy from picking a fight in any situation ever.
>>for all he knows it could make John more powerful than him
When has Guy thought anyone was tougher than he was? Even if the ring was more powerful than a standard GL ring, Guy would rationalize that his will + the power ring scales above whatever weapon exists. Same way he thought he could take Superman. John has like what, 2 months of training compared to Guy’s decade?
>>Guy has already expressed to John that he put in work to rehabilitate Green Lantern's image after the Rushville
shitshow
>>which is where they are right now
I get that, but the optics thing has so many workarounds. See pic related. They could have suggested moving the fight into space. Or just slugging it out with their fists. I’m willing to accept this new optics concern aspect of Guy as long as it doesn’t undermine the essential characteristic of Guy, which is his massive ego.
>>155778151
That seems to be the case. It just sucks that we seemed to have gotten a more faithful Guy in Superman 2025 who was willing to step up to Superman. But I guess Marine with 2 months of training was too much aura for Guy.
>>155778173
I’m not. As soon as John challenged Guy to take the battery, Guy should have at least stepped forward and threatened John back. Not just completely cuck out.

>>155778293

>>
>>155778514
No, it makes him look scared. People are coping, the narrative is very clear, Guy is a Trumpist analogue for racist Whiteys, and John is the stromg black man who the writers literally said represents Kamala Harris. According to the actual writers of Lanterns:

John Stewart is Kamala Harris
Hal Jorden is Joe Biden
Guy Gardener is Donald Trump

Once you have that insight, it all makes sense.v
>>
>>155778408

>>
>>155779079
>the black guy is willing to fight with a random White man, but he is totally unwilling to lay a finger on Hal Jordan's killer
There is nothing these writers could have done to make a satisfying ending with the previous 7 episodes of bullshit. The audience was just coping, if you have any perception at all it was obvious from episode 1 that the show was shit and would end like shit.

As for the real reason why there is no fight, Tom King has said that fights are fanservice and fanservice is bad writing. These people hate comics and super heroes on literally every level, the racial aspect is only part of it, but they have a fundamental hatred for the entire medium and despise everything we enjoy about it because they despise us. A fight scene could at least be fun to watch, which would make comic fans happy even minimally, which is for them means it's a no go.
>>
>>155779155
Donald Trump has fans too, he still needs to be taken down a peg and his fans humiliated.

Guy Gardener is Trump, John Stewart is Kamala Harris, Hal Jordan is Joe Biden, this is canon per the writers.
>>
>>155778947

It’s an entirely valid way to depict Guy in Lanterns. Especially when it’s in context to John revealing that he now wears Hal’s ring and has a lantern of his own. Guy suddenly finds himself in an unexpected situation where he might have to fight someone on an entirely equal ground, which he was not prepared to do, so it’s easier to just agree to be messenger and check with the bosses what to do. > It’s an entirely valid way to depict Guy in Lanterns.
Is it? Guy backing down to Batman took place on a very different context of wanting to prove to the GLC they made a mistake by booting him. Guy understands he needs to be a bit of a team player, an obligation he doesn’t owe John in the show, and even then he couldn’t even last 5 issues before picking a fight. What John ends up proposing, jurisdiction disputes, was cause for a lot of conflict between the lanterns, and Guy wasn’t prone to backing down to Hal or John when it came to Green Lantern obligations.
> Especially when it’s in context to John revealing that he now wears Hal’s ring and has a lantern of his own.
I’m not really buying this considering what we saw him do in Superman (2025). Both in stepping up to Superman and being willing to defy the Guardians.
> Because it might even be a big problem for him if starts shit without notifying the Smurfs first on something of this magnitude
This all seems far too risk averse for Guy. And, from Guy’s perspective, if Guy takes the equipment and the Guardians get mad at Guy for whatever reason, why can’t they just return it to John?
>>155781108
It undermined Guy’s character. I don’t even care if it “looks bad” on Guy, I care whether he’s faithfully adapted, he’ll even consistent with what we saw in Superman 2025. You want John taking out Guy in a single move? That’s fine with me.

>>
>>155781391
>I’m not really buying this considering what we saw him do in Superman

In Superman he thinks he can take Superman on. It’s different when suddenly he would have to go against someone with the same weapon as him. It’s the difference between thinking Superman is just a guy who can fly and punch things and facing someone who can do everything you can. And Guy rebelling against orders he doesn’t agree with is different from facing a situation where he’s unsure what to do, so it’s easier to defer to authority. Because while he might ignore some orders occasionally he isn’t a fuck all authority rebel. And keep in mind Guy stole Hal’s ring and brought it to Earth. So there’s part of him thinking “if I don’t report this myself immediately, and spin it, I could be in trouble and lose my ring”. And that’s why starting a major fight with John would be a bad idea no matter how annoyed he is. He knows part of the reason Jordan got kicked out was that the Guardians didn’t trust him. They might tolerate some insubordination for the greater good from Guy but going behind everyone’s back, stealing a ring and now there’s someone else using it and he now also somehow has an illegal lantern? That’s enough concerning developments to make Guy look bad if he fails to report it himself.

>It’s different when suddenly he would have to go against someone with the same weapon as him.
And nine years less experience with it, lol

Guy has a metaphorical Napoleon complex and punches up all the fucking time.

It's actually even worse, John's ring was dead remember. It's why he needed the dark lantern or whatever so guy easily could have constructed a giant fist or gun and he'd have gotten the ring back but nope. Also weird how I liked mr terrific a much more obscure leaguer/hero but they made John Stewart insufferable. I was begging for guy to call his bluff plus what can a rookie lantern with either a dead ring or low charge do too a man that fights monsters daily and actually has no fear based on the shows new ring requirements
>>
>>155781765
And he also gets talked down often and then acts meek about it for a while.
>>
>>155781790
He didn’t know that. That’s part of why he pussies out, dummy. He was faced with the possibility of fighting another lantern user and that’s an entirely different ball game.
>>
>>155781792
He very often gets his shit slapped, actually. Guy starting fights isn't just a threat, even if he often loses them.
>>
>>155781809
A noob who could barely fly with no ring combat experience. It was just to make the black thief look tough, fulfill the writers' fetish and because they didnt have the budget (somehow) for a lantern fight. Why am I arguing with a disingenuous faggot?

> In Superman he thinks he can take Superman on. It’s different when suddenly he would have to go against someone with the same weapon as him. It’s the difference between thinking Superman is just a guy who can fly and punch things and facing someone who can do everything you can.
I’ve tackled some of these points here >>155778408. Guy thinks he can take on anyone. It’s a part of his character. And John has what, 2 months experience? And keep in mind, Hal didn’t update the Guardians on John’s progress and Hal didn’t inform Guy of anything after Rushville. He shouldn’t have a clue John is a prodigy from what I recall (not that I think that’d make a difference).
> And Guy rebelling against orders he doesn’t agree with is different from facing a situation where he’s unsure what to do, so it’s easier to defer to authority. Because while he might ignore some orders occasionally he isn’t a fuck all authority rebel.
This just makes me think along these lines >>155778514. Deference to authority, cautious, forward thinking, analytical, risk averse are all not terms I would associate with Gardner. He’s an egomaniacal doofus with a short fuse and a good heart. I understand it makes sense rationally why Guy would do this. It’s just not a faithful adaptation, which is my original point. Sure you can sorta square this with Superman 2025 by splitting hairs over the context but when Superman 2025 came out last year, people were under the impression this Guy would be a decent adaptation because, on its face, his behavior in that movie was far more faithful to how he acts.
> So there’s part of him thinking “if I don’t report this myself immediately, and spin it, I could be in trouble and lose my ring”.
Fighting John and reporting what happened are not mutually exclusive. Wouldn’t Guy look better if he came back to the Guardians with his mess already clean upped?

>THERE GO A NEGRO NOW
'The album version of Michael Kiwanuka's "Hero" features the original lyric "There go a negro now," which was inspired by the James Baldwin documentary I Am Not Your Negro and the story of Fred Hampton.'

If they character assassinated the first three, even John being a prominent minority, what makes you think they'd handle Kyle any better?

>>155782448
exactly, if these tards think Lanterns was character assassination they're not going to be fine with any reasonable portrayal of any Lantern

You're expecting it not be be even more shit later
I thought they weren't going to actually kill hal jordan, but they did in the stupidest way possible

The whole show was building up to John flying off to this ape-brained lyric. Truly True Detective-tier.

>>155777251
Kylefags should be fucking ecstatic at this point, their boy is basically the only Earth Lantern whose public perception hasn't been torched by this show.

Well, I guess there's Simon and Jess. But nobody really gives a shit about them, I think.
