Comic books were for children, but had a higher reading level. (that has kept up with the decline of civilization... and the lack of time we're allowed to enjoy things.) Mike Grell made the series fantastic.The cartoon was as perfect as it could be. The after 2000 comics didn't lose the plot either. The LOSH was a young adult's support group, trying to put people where they could do good, in a world that hated them for being teenagers.

I think LOSH could actually have been a better starting point for a new DC movie universe. Supes being a teen and the Legion already knowing all about him makes them easier to get invested in when they have the same level of information the audience has and the fact it is an uncharted movie area of adaptation that could also tackle other Superman stuff in a new context. Sure you would eventually have to reconcile young Superman's time with the eventual time that comes where he's part of the Justice League but I think that would only increase interest for audiences. Also DC has always been more about concepts and ideas rather than characters. Later years had characters catch up and make use of these ideas in new realistic contexts like Marvel. But DC's overall wild umiverse with far out Sci-fi and magic is what I think is the main draw.
Hey total Legion newbie here, why do they not go to a time where he's older and get a powerful Superman instead? Is the excuse is that the Legion getting Superboy is pre-ordained by history/time to take place because his time with the Legion molds him into being the Superman we know? Is that reason something retconned after the fact in some kino story I just made up in my head?
