What the hell are you talking about? The "status quo isn't good" mindset is like 40 years old in the comic community. Why do you think there are so many comics where butthurt writers turn genuine complaints into a strawman? Manchester Black, several version of Luthor, Vandal Savage and other are used to shit on the idea that heroes should change the world because only villains would do that. Why doesn't Ironman give free energy to everyone? Why doesn't Reed Richards or Bruce Banner give people the cure of every single disease? That only happens in What Ifs where Dr. Doom or other villains kill the heroes. They keep doing this because they can't give people a genuine answer to "why heroes don't improve the world?" Superman, the symbol of hope, doesn't actually inspire people to be better. Batman can't stop crime. Tony Stark and Reed don't share their tech and knowledge to improve the life of the normal people.
>>

>Superman, the symbol of hope, doesn't actually inspire people to be better.
>Tony Stark and Reed don't share their tech and knowledge to improve the life of the normal people.
This isn't entirely true as there are cases of them doing it in the comics. It's just that comics, by definition, need them to fail in stopping evildoers and tragedies permanently, as they need to keep happening for the heroes to have storylines, which is what makes every long-running hero storyline ultimately fruitless. It's not that they never succeed; it's that their victories are undermined by the company forcing them to go back to zero. It's why Spider-Man has to learn to get over himself and fight crime for the 100th time, because his previous progress is undermined by the newest writer.
>Batman can't stop crime
Depending on how you see it, this is part of what makes him appealing. He's fighting a pointless fight as massive cope for losing his parents, but he still helps the most he can for an unsalvageable city. His goal is unachievable, but he's doing the best he can until he eventually dies.

>comics, by definition, need them to fail in stopping evildoers and tragedies permanently, as they need to keep happening for the heroes to have storylines, which is what makes every long-running hero storyline ultimately fruitless
This is my major obstacle in ever becoming invested in capes. I can enjoy the odd self contained story arc, but ultimately the status quo has to be maintained for them to work and it gets old pretty fast when you know the story is never really going to move forward.

>>
>>155880292
>what if bruce wayne just opened a damn factory and got people some jobs?
>>
>>155878271
The simple reason is their world is suppose to be like ours but with superheroes going around, their world can only change if ours does first.
>>
>>155879045
The 2 reasons why the status quo is maintained in Superhero comics are:
1) killing/neutralizing bad guys would just force them to write new bad guys or bring them back
2) these superhero settings has to superficially resemble the modern era
Thus they become agents of the status quo. Instead of accepting the obvious out-of-universe explanation, people started invent bullshit in-universe explanations to preserve the "immersion", Then Alan Moore makes a comic about how superheroes are retarded and gay; but instead of pointing out the flaws of the industry, he made it about his retarded commie ideas. Now everybody is using their villains to sneak their retard ideas since we keep having this dialectic type conflict where the morally perfect hero beats the objectively evil badguy but hero takes aspect of the villain's beliefs like it is a threat to audience.

"Saving" implies rescuing someone from danger in a specific situation. saving them from a fire, a robbery, or a kidnapping.

"Fixing" implies altering the way things are structured; it means acknowledging that the situation is so bad that a complete overhaul is required.

Both approaches can be positive, but "fixing" often entails something more: what do you do about those who claim the situation is fine? What about those who do not believe anything needs to be fixed the way you intend to fix it?

>>
>>155880736
saving can also be done to someone who doesnt think it need it.

fixing acknowledges that something is broken and can be made better. saving people doesnt necessary mean mending the root cause.

the "saver" remove the people from the flooded city before they drown. the "fixer" rework the retension basins and the emergency runoff so that it doesnt happen again. both are useful and necessary.

That's crazy. ATLA's third episode ended with the introduction of the Avatar state. That show had great pacing. In just three episodes it established:

Nigga are those two retarded? or did they forget that Korra left a damn portal open leading into spirits like Ko the face stealer? Oh wait we can't forget that she actually couldn't even defeat enemies that were weaker than her! Amon I can pass that since we have never seen another like that, but loosing to Unalaq before bonding with Vaatu? nigga you gotta be kidding me, you can't be the avatar if you are that retarded and what frightens me the most is that they will make Korra seem evil or retarded at first but then in one episode they will reveal that she intended to do good but some white straight male prevented her from doing so leading to the cataclysm that leaded to the creation of the seven havens

it pisses me off that this is the most probable thing to happen since these two faggots can't acknowledge that Korra was poorly written

Because often changing the world results in a lot of disruption, chaos, and death. People's lives are thrown out of order, and it's often for the sake of selfishness by the disrupting party.

If you want to take two cape settings as an example, the Flash and My Hero Academia. In the Flash Barry/Wally fights superpowered villains who want to kill/destroy/rape/etc. They want to protect the stable status quo that was changed by crazy people with superpowers.

In MHA the heroes recognize the villains are being evil because of faults with society, so after they're defeated the heroes spend time working to improve society, preventing situations where new villains would emerge once more. This leads to less work for heroes, so they wind up engaging in various hobbies and interconnecting to pass the time.

She could have prevented all of that if she hadn't been such an emotional mess. And all that happened when she was 17 years old, while Aang did ONE childish mistake as a 12 year old(that couldn't have prevented the genocide anyway) and spend every single episode after that doing the right thing, meanwhile Korra constantly went back to being a bitch.

I don't think people would blame Korra as much for the crap the villains do if she actually took her serving of humble pie and made an effort to change and become a better (and more likable) person. She repeatedly falls into the same patterns and makes the same mistakes and tends to just bulldoze her way through things without maturing and becoming the sensible Avatar she should be.

Like, the circumstances around the Cataclysm are obviously more murky than they first seem, but on first glance it seems Korra doomed the world in yet another cosmic temper tantrum and people finally had enough of her shit and put her in the ground for it, and that's funny because it's perfectly in-character for her.

Tagah beating them can be explained by him being from centuries ago and knowing techniques completely alien to them (which we are shown, not told), such as the air bullet and the negative pressure wavedash, in addition to none of them except arguably Zuko and Toph having ever actually fought an airbender, let alone one that was trying to beat them

Unalaaq... was just a normal waterbender using normal waterbending that anyone could have learned. His only special gimmick was spirit bending, which doesn't work on people.
Korra should have been able to mop the floor with him, considering she'd been training since she was 6 or whatever in every element, monitored by experts in their field.
Unalaaq was a politician most of the time, he quite literally should not have been able to be a challenge to her, unless he was constantly abusing his spirit bending to swarm korra with angry ghosts.

It really would be nice if they ended up having Pavisha restore the past lives, and it would lead to tons of fan goodwill, and it would make sense from a story perspective (each avatar trying to fix the last one's mistakes), but the pessimist in me says Bryke are going to double down on it being a permanent thing because they think it makes for a compelling... thing that happened...
Even though literally everyone would be happy seeing that tragedy reverted and it would be universally praised, and would be a perfect passing of the torch from Korra to the twins, and it would retroactively make Korra a little better because she would have to eat some humble pie and say "I'm so proud of you, you fixed one of my greatest failures", AND it would be a perfect bit of hopecore because now the avatar can be a beacon of wisdom and hope for the future since the history that was once lost can be regained through communing with the past lives.

It'd have to be an endgame goal though

NTA, but I'd say there's less highs and lows compared to the first 3 episodes of ATLA
I recommend rewatching the first 3 episodes of book 1, as Aang was very cringe in the beginning, though there were higher highs since everything was cool and new and we were discovering a new world
The only truly cringe moment I can think of is Pavi having a tantrum in the white lotus arena, not wanting to fight

I still think ATLA's the far better show, but it's the gold standard, and it can't be recreated since it was lightning in a bottle. I don't think this show will ever be amazing, but it might be somewhat good, eventually

There can be aspects of the status quo that need addressing and changing without overhauling everything. The problem is it's far too complicate to address the idea of "How do we address what needs changing without the blunt problem of becoming tyrants ourselves?" in superhero comics where people want to see people punch each other and shoot lasers at bad guys.
>>

Aang was 12 and gets solo'd by Azula *in* the avatar state before he masters it. The raid on the air nomad temple happened before he would've been trained to master the avatar state.
If you count additional details from the Netflix series as canon, they attack the same day he runs off. All Aang staying around to fight would've done was get him killed, then the water avatar found and imprisoned (the southern water tribe produced korra and was easy to raid unlike the north) and then they would've kept the avatar imprisoned while doing their raids, and the Earth avatar would have been born into a world where water and fire mastery were virtually impossible to obtain (or just black-bagged by the dai li)

basically Bryke WROTE the show and in their own writing give Aang no winnable situation except running away.
>>
>>155889792
It's not laziness, it's not pragmatic cynicism that most antiheroes arrive at. You're not always a 'bad person' just for acknowledging you cannot do everything.
>Regardless, they have all the information required to be actual heroes in Lanters, they just choose not to.
Sometimes there's literally no choice. Like people give shit for Hal and maybe he was a dickhead, but how could he seriously have saved the town?
>Called the Guardians: They take away his ring and bury Rushville completely to hide the Manhunter getting out, and Antaan probably arrives before even that.
>Stall for time- Antaan and his goons nuke the town
>Do what he did to stop Zoe- we saw how that turned out
It might be more of a gritty western genre thing but sometimes there's no ultimate heroism that can save everyone without sacrifice. That's realistic.
>>
>>155888062
It's almost like ATLA actually acknowledged Aang's guilt during the series and was a character arc or something.

I mean he is kind of a product of the flawed system, because said system chose him and decided he'd be their pick.

Has their ever been a superhero series where the hero actually acknowledges and comes into a screwed system but realizes there's no simple straight-heroic solution? And 'fixing' the world is not paramount to saving it, but would just fuck over everyone because it leaves no solution in place of whatever you're destroying?
>>
>>155889936
You're describing the ending of Watchmen, the comic that is either a satire, deconstruction or hate letter to heroes depending on who you ask.
>i mean he is kind of a product of the flawed system, because said system chose him and decided he'd be their pick
The flaw isn't that it picked Hal, it's that Hal is the only heroic person in this whole nonsense and yet he is treated like an unwanted replacement by everyone.

>>
>>155889979
Seems you want silver age-y stories or Saturday Morning cartoons then? The reason gray morality exists in fiction is because writers try to write situations more complicated than a hero swinging their arm and stopping bad guy. Complicated situations make complicated characters, because writers and fans get tired of simplistic tropey plots.
>>
>>155890007
Watchmen treats him as a genocidal maniac with delusions of grandeur, what? In universe, a few characters realize that outing the truth would make all the blood that's been spilled utterly meaningless, so they choose to keep quiet to preserve the most amount of life. That's not the same thing as treating Ozzy as a savior.
>>
>>155890031
Gray morality works best as a compliment in good vs evil stories

If everything is gray, there is no contrast
>>
>>155889990

you are a pseud conflating good writing with edgy gray morality. a story does not automatically become good and mature because the characters are assholes, nor does a story become immature and boring because the characters are good people. need i remind you, you are in a thread about a saturday morning cartoon series that contains characters who are good people, but also has a few moments of gray morality without turning any of the protagonists into evil assholes.

lanterns fucking sucks because everyone is an insane psycho except for hal, who at his absolute worst is a crass asshole, but still tries to do the right thing despite everyone trying to kill him. it sucks because every single insane psycho we're told is supposed to be the "real" heroes or "real victims" get away with being psychos scot-free.
>>
>>155890047
>genocidal maniac with delusions of grandeur
>That's not the same thing as treating Ozzy as a savior
Right, but he's still on the side of a character who wants to preserve the status quo (stop the world from nuclear annihilation). Aside from Russia and America working together and preventing MAD, society goes exactly like it did before. Effectively Oz is treated as a villain for doing the same things Marvel heroes always do all the time and get to remain heroes for (like the times they've straight up committed genocide for the 'greater good'). Rorschach is painted as antagonistic and insane for considering everything degenerate and needing to 'fix it.'
>>
>>155890092
>aside from changing the status quo in a major way by ending the cold war via mass falseflag genocide, ozymandias doesn't change the status quo
rorschach wants to maintain the status quo by telling everyone the truth of what happened, and is constantly nostalgic for the "good old days" when he and owlnerd and the rest of the watchmen went out and fought crime the normal way

>lanterns fucking sucks because everyone is an insane psycho except for hal

Lanterns is good because everyone in the show are assholes but many of them still have reasons for it and doing the right thing, and thinking purely in categories of "Good guy" or "Bad guy who good guy needs to punch" is a simplistic way of viewing the world.

It's a good show, you're just too wrapped up in the idea of identifying with Hal as your videogame self-insert so you cannot stomach gray morality writing since it denies that indulgence for conventional viewing and prompts more disagreement then it does an easy thrill.

You can still have characters trying to do the right-thing without equating them a child's vision of heroism.
>>
>>155890116
Yeah, that's kind of the twist of Ror's character. He flips around and wants to save the society he condemned the entire series. It's an indictment against B&W morality like Steve Ditko's Mr. A.

The first one was a test, he wasn't trying to kill him
The second one he wasn't trying to kill him either, just trying to immobilize him, he had no idea the car would catch fire
Arguably, the second time was fucking retarded and the writers were smoking crack, because there's no reason to assume wrapping the car around a telephone pole would perfectly immobilize Jon

This is besides the point: Lanterns is not good, full stop. If you think it is, your opinion is automatically invalid.

I'm not even painting Hal's entire character by those incidents because I can understand the honest portrayal of a flawed human, so it's dumb to try to perform mental gymnastics to excuse them either because you need a pure black and white character.

It seems like your entire idea of a good show is pretty warped around how much you can glaze a character, which is you gnash and groan about since you cannot see yourself in it thru whatever metrics you need, and which seem very narrow at that.

On the one hand, it makes writing future conflicts difficult because then the audience will always ask, "Why doesn't the avatar just commune with their past lives for guidance every time there's a problem?"
The solution to this question is to either make doing so difficult, or make the problem require a solution that the past lives didn't have experience with and couldn't give a straight answer to.

AtLA did both, as it was pretty difficult for Aang to commune with any of his past lives on purpose, as he had to be in specific spiritual locations to do so, AND he was already somewhat of a spiritually attuned prodigy due to his upbringing. His past lives also couldn't give him a straight answer to his question: "How do I stop Ozai without killing him, which would fundamentally be like allowing my culture to die all over again by betraying their ideals, as I am the last living Airbender"

The solution wasn't to get rid of this lifeline in TLoK, and the answer was always staring them in the face. Korra is not a spiritually attuned character like Aang was, and she probably never would be until post-TLoK. She's a boneheaded fighter, through and through, and the series should have been her slowly growing out of that. All they had to do was just make contacting her past lives much more difficult, or not even possible outside of major character moments, because she's not that kind of spiritual character. It's also a brand new world with brand new problems, and all the avatars are from antiquity, so they probably wouldn't have the exact answers she was looking for anyway. All they'd have to do would be to offer some vague but helpful wisdom, not the exact solution to all of her problems.

But Bryke didn't do this, because outside of getting lucky with writing AtLA alongside Aaron Ehasz, they seemingly can't write their way out of a paper bag.

To fix something means that there is a problem to be fixed in the first place. So if there is a problem then there is a cause to that problem, and if there is a cause then that means that to find the problem and fix it you need to find the cause. And that is not something people like doing because it can reveal things that they want to keep hidden.

Superheroes can’t radically change society because the one of the main selling points is that their world is still recognizable to our own and they also can’t kill or even redeem their villains because then you can’t make stories with those characters. If Batman actually fixed Gotham you couldn’t make comics about Gotham being a violent shithole it’s that simple.
So what you’re left with is settings where nothing gets better and the people meant to fix things refuse to do anything drastic to fix anything as the same assholes make everything worse. Which is why you have people sucking off violent retards like the punisher being the world’s unintentionally vindictive that behavior

Because it’s the default state for smug self righteous/sanctimonious retards who don’t actually know how to solve anything and will only marginally acknowledge a problem and take performative actions to make it look like they will fix it. No real thought, just a vague idea that something should happen and someone should alter their course but no one can ever say how due to either not knowing or not wanting to out themselves as a psycho.

I’ve said this exact thing in multiple threads. I don’t get why people just stop trying to make sense of these worlds as just let them be what they are. You can have an interesting story without trying IRL bullshit into everything. It’s why I think a run of Batman where he gets all of his villains behind bars and they don’t come back would be great. It would be an utterly dry story where Batman just puts everyone behind bars or the cops kill. It will go through court proceedings and sentencing, the whole shebang. And by the end there will be no more big villains and Batman will basically just retire. It can be one big message saying “There you go, this is what you wanted, see how boring this is? See how it just ends? You want Batman and all the other underwear crime fighters doing shit in perpetuity? Then shut the fuck up about dumb shit that some asshole who writes essays for a living comes up with.”

I'm calling it now, the 225 year gap in avatars isn't because korra survived that long and died ~9 years before 7 havens, but because she died during the cataclysm and the twins were put on ice for ~219 years, only emerging ~6 years before the start of 7 havens

i'm gonna blame white lotus and/or future industries cryo chambers or something like that, and the cryo chambers were discovered by some scavengers, and they adopted the twins, and those are the "parents" we see in the flashbacks

The leaks, which are looking to be more accurate the more we see of the show, said that Korra fucked up the reincarnation cycle because she decided to fuse with vaatuu to fix her previous fuck up leaving the spirit portal open. The world ending event is technically only indirectly her fault if you wanna be generous.

Anyway Korra died in the avatar state with two avatar spirits and apparently that messed jp.the reincarnation cycle. I'm guessing this implies a new retcon dying in the avatar state doesn't permanently end the avatar cycle, just delays it? That last bit is my own theory.

I'm tired of people bringing up lava bending when we have only seen 2 people who can do it and Toph herself stated that it is a rare ability.
>>
>>155894462
That proves my point: he didn't force change on anyone and simply dedicated himself to acting as a mediator between people to try to balance the world.
Korra told everyone that they had to accept spirits and coexist with them.
No one benefited from that, so they had to retcon it so that airbending returned without explanation, just to get something positive out of their decision.
except that it gave powers to villains, which brought war and chaos.

Gray morality is itself a trope, and one that a lot of mid writers use nowadays to avoid having to write actual conviction for their characters or craft any kind of meaningful conflict centered around existstional stakes.

Goddamn, I'm so tired of midwits thinking something being a trope is inherently bad. You dumb fucking retards don't understand the point of tropes, or even what they are since everything is a trope. Even TVTropes knows the problem with your stupid fucking approach.

The problem is that Americans don't know (or have forgotten) what moral ambiguity is.
Modern writers seem to think that a villain who commits truly evil acts but delivers a political speech against the status quo is enough to qualify as morally grey.
Or worse, a woman who's a total bitch automatically qualifies as a hero just because she hates the patriarchy or something.

>>

Wednesday or Thursday by the looks of it. I dunno' if any of that actually ties into the episodes themselves, though. You can make the connection between Korra's last lines of the show being her agreeing to a spirit world vacation with Asami to us getting a glimpse of the Republic City portal and a Future Industries building in ep. 2 but it's kind of a reach. This week's message was 'we are everywhere' and it unlocked a clip of the brigade fighting the bandits.

I'm willing to enjoy the story, but something interesting needs to happen.
The Last Airbender was a show for kids, but there were enough adult themes to chew on that it could have its cake and eat it too.
So far Seven Havens is just a kid's show without any real spice to talk about.
By the end of TLA episode 3, we had seen Monk Gyatso's fuckign skeleton and Aang had to cope with the fact that his people were genocided.
By the end of SH episode 3, we'd seen a gay kiss.
Like, come on. I'm looking forward to a little bit of drama and pathos, but I don't know if that's coming. I can hold out hope that it's just going to be a slow burn, but some part of me in my core just expects the show is going to be about childish woke shit happening until it suddenly ends.

You're choosing to focus on the gay kiss and not the ominous diamond that zapped the girls' minds, unlocked some of their memories and showed them a glimpse of the cataclysm and then just disappeared? Or the reveal that they remember their mom?

So telling Jae to take it easy really was his masterplan! He knew he would see Pavi earthbend and then chase her out of the city. He probably orchestrated the hurricane causing Pavi to expose herself as the Avatar and exhaust herself. He knew Jae would then bring her to him. He must be a genius!

it's in the wrong place for omashu, ellora is more where that oasis with the ice in the middle was in AtLA where iroh and zuko first interacted with the white lotus

more likely is that beneath ellora is the control center for that AI spirit thing (remember, it rose out of a pattern on ground inside the city), and the ruins are maybe connected to that area somehow

if i had to guess, the AI spirit thing is some kind of old-world security bot that the councilwoman's caste uses for some reason or another (maybe they're using it to hunt bandits out in the desert, maybe they're using it in a dai li role, maybe they're using it to cause those storms so they can justify staying in power and not let anyone travel to other havens), and it runs on spirit energy, which is why there are fewer benders born every year - it's using all that ambient energy that's supposed to be going to benders

There was a leak audition script for ASH where the girls get into a fight with each other but it seems to be set when they were younger. The leaks said that Pavi was left behind because she was considered too weak, is it because of her leg? If so, how'd she lose it? And where was Kiran during al this?

When the girls encounter the red rhombus, they see some quick flashes. I was wondering if some of the flashes show the girls traveling with their parents, a short time before they lose their parents and their memories. The woman in the group has a braid like the mother in that one flashback. Also, one kid is lagging badly behind in one of the shots.

I'm also wondering if the shot of the kid with rectangles on her body is an old forgotten memory, or if it's a vision of the future.
