Who even cares anymore? People only watched RWBY for the dumb anime fights and those went away after Monty died and the animation quality somehow got even worse. After that the only notable things were the porn and homophobic Ruby. Where could they even take it at this point? RWBY's original fanbase moved on already.

RWBY may not be as profitable as it once was, but the fact that it WAS popular and made money is something Viz paid attention to, especially in light of the RWBY mangas being published under Viz. There's also the fact that the blu-rays for RWBY V1-3 sold VERY well in Japan (7000, 6000, and 4500). V4 and beyond only sold poorly because of scheduling issues resulting in the blu-rays not coming out for years to the point a lot of dedicated Japanese otaku didn't even know the series was still going. V8-9 were the only volumes to be deemed a financial failure in Japan (they sold under 2000). Meanwhile, RWBY's DVD and blu-ray sales have always been much stronger in America. V7 pulled in over a million dollars which meant around 16k blu rays.

Gamified fantasy series do stupidly well with the otaku market and FF has never really had a dedicated anime (most JRPGs don't) so from a business perspective, why not go for that niche? It's also not a coincidence that RWBY spin-offs purposefully are set in V1-3 with the school setting. Viz is aware that fantasy school anime sells in light of Harry Potter being some of the biggest movies in Japan's box office history.

The last thing of RWBY I watched was the fight with the weird horse thing. By then I was already kind of bored with it. The show always had garbage writing and normal animation but it kind of made up for it with the fight scenes. After they switched to a new animation software and the original animator died it didn't even have cool fights anymore. I know there's an actual anime out there and some weird crossover with DC, but neither one sounded interesting.
