What ruined the reputation of nuclear power more, Chernobyl or The Simpsons?
>>
>>155880690
Chernobyl would be a bad memory by now if the Simpsons didn't keep reviving the idea that nuclear = bad every year for 37 years.
>>
>>155880690
Chernobyl. I'm tired of the meme.
>>
>>155880690
The Simpsons simply make a joke about how poorly Burns runs the nuclear plant

The problem is that many people have accepted the idea that whenever a millionaire is in charge of an energy or technology company, that idiot will hire the cheapest, most incompetent labor and bribe every regulatory agency just to stay afloat.

Which is, technically, the part of satire or criticism that rings true.
>>
>>155880690
Definitely simpsons.
To this day people think the water vapor from the cooling towers is some kind of venomous smoke because they colored it grey

This is true, though. The way Nuclear is implemented in the US is absolutely fucking retarded right now.
>>
>>155880774
It made nuclear look inherently evil and harmful (the smokestacks pouring black smoke instead of steam) and a bad idea from the start.
>>
>>155882970
Because of how it's been hindered and demonized.

Ooze isn't radioactive. You're thinking of the Mirage issues that were borderline parody, where the turts were literally Matt Murdock's pets and they all got splashed with radioactive waste.

Simple fact is this. People would love efficient power plants, if one little day of "oopsie daisy" meant widespread ecological disaster and alot of cancer patients. Chernobyl will never be a "bad memory" because you can still see the husk of the city that you still can never repopulate because the Soviets wanted to cut corners.

That and it being a warzone (unless that's changed I dunno) didn't help it either.

The real life disaster did more than the cartoon.
AFAIK, Human error was the biggest factor in chernobyl, and it could have been a lot worse. It's hard to sleep next to a potential bomb, especially not on that scale.
>>
Godzilla would probably have done more than the simpsons
>>
Chernobyl, obviously. But The Simpsons legitimately fucked with public opinion on nuclear power for no good reason.

Seems like a pretty pernicious double standard. To care about things like homosexual representation but not care about other things that have major impacts on society like nuclear power. Although even despite Homer's Enemy The Simpsons didn't do gays any favours either I guess.

Point is, either have a social conscience or don't.
>>
>>155887867
Wait, that was Homer's Phobia. My bad.
>>
>>155880690
Chernobyl, and the modern media representation of it does no good either. The Simpsons has nothing to do with this. You can talk to almost anyone and they will tell you "nuclear power bad because bad thing happened during cold war".
>>
>>155880690
No facility (outside of Mayak under Beria) has ever been run anywhere near as badly as the one in the Simpsons tho

Simpsons made light of the dangers of nuclear power, so clearly not them. So much of the OG writers' commentary and warnings flew over people's heads.

It was nothing to do with chernobyl. Three Mile was the actual nail in the coffin in the US despite it having such a small impact ecologically. That hit close to home and was in your literal backyard and oil affiliated outlets and agencies jumped on it. Then came the eco revolution as an answer to replace nuclear and now we are full circle back to:
>oil good, sustainability gay

Normies were psyop'd intergenerationally to slop fossil cock away from nuclear with the replacing of nuclear for eco and then to oil.

>>155883021
Giving rich manchildren less rules has never worked, data center shill.
>>
>>155880690
Neither - if you want to know what killed nuclear power in the US look no further than Greenpeace and it's 40-year-long, oil lobby-funded campaign to paint nuclear power as a literal instrument of death.

Once oil runs out by maybe 2056 if they decide to go after the one buried deep in both noth and south poles, then we are into the fallout timeline.

>>155880707
Chernobyl was more like the final nail in the coffin, but in American, the event that cemented the perception of nuclear power as dangerous was the film The China Syndrome. Which portrayed nuclear power as dangerously unsafe and that right-wing billionaires were willing to cover up its risks. Just 12 days after its release, the Three Mile Island nuclear accident occurred, validating the film’s warnings for both boomers and Gen X.
>>155887978
The liberal and libertarian writers of The Simpsons were influenced by the cultural attitudes of their time and were fundamentally critical of nuclear power, helping to normalize and popularize these views among audiences.

Precisely, they cut corners, push thing beyond the limits and tried to do nothing to keep the problem hidden. Chernobyl is a cosmic alignment of bad desicions from beguining to end.
>>

The 70's was a huge social experiment wasnt it?

>It made nuclear look inherently evil and harmful (the smokestacks pouring black smoke instead of steam)
We had a pair of cooling towers installed for a local plant. They looked like nuclear "smokestacks", but they were just to cool water from an entirely coal-based plant. The normies were STILL up in arms about it, and people protested them until they were eventually removed. Normies are just dumb animals who operate on vibes, and trying to cater to them will kill us.

Burgers banned suppressors because of british spy flick.
>>
Fukushima certainly didn't help things, despite it being more due to the placement of the plant and the tsunami rather than the plant itself.
>>
>>155887867
>he thinks an animated comedy series on Fox "cared" about things
It's not a TV show's job to be equitable, you fucking dolt.
>Simpsons legitimately fucked with public opinion on nuclear power for no good reason.
The reason was to be funny. You're far too eager to push responsibility on literal TV entertainment. You're like 90s soccer mom levels of stupid.
>>
Demonstrably efficient nuclear energy would provide an alternative to oil, which is necessary to keep the power of the dollar going.
>>
>>155892335
It's amazing how the popular memory has switched the tsunami's death toll for Fukushima in their heads. The fucking Pacific Ocean rolled over Japan and killed tens of thousands, and a plant that took the brunt of that had some issues, big fucking whoop. They probably killed more elderly by evacuating them in a rush than any radiation did
>>
>>155890913
>>155892263
Are you not aware Pripyat is still uninhabitable beyond short term visits? There is still debris to be found around the area with low level radiation emissions. Areas of the power plant are still highly dangerous in the area near the sarcophagus. To say nothing of inside it.
Hell much of the wooded area near the plant is a time bomb waiting to go off because there are acres of trees that died from radiation exposure and never broke down because all the micro organisms that should handle that task were killed too. If the was a fire in that forest that got out of hand it could create a toxic cloud of smoke from the burning irradiated wood that would drift for miles.

Humans are prone to be hyper reactive to things we can see. Even if we know a problem exists we won't react as strongly to it unless we have visual evidence of it in front of us. The Hindenburg was not the first airship to crash and burn in a firebomb. It wasn't even the most deadly. Airships had been causing accidents with large death tolls for a long time before Hindenburg. The reason that one accident turned public opinion so heavily against lighter than aircraft use is because it was caught on film. Having something you can actually see makes a world of difference to the general populace.

So yeah, the fact the area not just around Chernobyl is too dangerous to stay in but the town nearby still be prohibited for long term habitation are massive red flags that hurt many people's trust in Nuclear power. There is plenty of photographic evidence of these creepy abandoned places that were a result of that accident.
Nuclear power is a great and efficient source of energy, it's also a massive spectacle when something fucks up.

I was a temp at a nuclear plant during a refuel outage and all the guys in operations had Homer Simpson mugs
