I think it comes from a basic thing to it. The idea of going up to an open fire, taking a stick out putting it your mouth and feeling like a bad ass no one wants to mess with. The fire is a big part too. I hate smoking and i saw a Japanese tourist once whip out a lighter and light his smoke up in such a professional way it was so elegant. Problem is he's putting smoke in his mouth yeah. Idk it's kinda a big taboo, a temptation. If smoking wasn't bad for you everyone would do it but, it is and it makes the climate smellier so eh.
