Why's he such a LOSER?
>>155884480Jerry represents the war on regular people in Hollywood. Rick and Beth are extensions of fantasies and wish fulfilment while Jerry is someone who would succeed in the real world in ways the writers fail. The show has evolved to make Jerry an integral part of the family the way everyone else is. But there was a period where all sorts of baggage and resentment was placed onto him. Depending on who's in charge of the episode, you can tell which writers' are the most resentful of people who told them "there are better ways to spend your time than watching movies".Compare Rick, a clear self-insert for Dan Harmon; outsmarting everyone, being the funniest man in the room, beating all sorts of characters from pop-culture, and being compared to a God in many scenes to someone like Jerry. Where his ultimate fantasy was him delivering water to make people happy. There's an understanding among the Rick and Morty nihilism subscribers that people like Jerry are the ones living correctly. In the fictional world they have control of, Jerry is disrespected, unemployed, and even has his wife chat on him with her own clone. The same way powerful people tamper with our lives to make our day-to-day more arduous. Simply out of spite. But Jerry is infinitely more respectable than the characters he's put next to because of his humility in those situations.Jerry is actually a very strong person. He's only made a loser by having that label placed onto him by others and having it said enough times to be treated like it's true.
>>155884480He got married and reproduced. what else is there?
>>155885810Lol, you are pathetic
>>155884480>>155885810jerry is simply just not exceptional in a world full of people who are. he could be your dad and you'd love him, but when his father in law and son are jumping between universes and killing aliens, he's simply just a guy who works at an advertising firm or something. it's easy to see him in that way. it doesn't make him a loser, it just makes him boring comparatively.
>>155885826Don’t be stupid
Show had the quickest downhill slide in animated sitcom history.
>>155885867I really don't get where the original hype even came from. I can assume that maybe it was coming off of Harmon's success with Community, but that explanation only goes so far. That Rick and Morty copypasta very much seemed to accurately reflect the people who were super in to the show early on, and the whole sceszuan sauce thing really did cement the way the show would be seen from then on.
>>155885930First season was pretty good and more often shows get better from the start as the writers and actors figure out what works.

>>155884480he had a semi normal family and hes a cis white straight man.
>>155885810>his ultimate fantasy was him delivering water to make people happyI always thought this was really weird. Was it supposed to be pathetic that he dreamed of diligently doing a simple job and receiving mild appreciation for it?
>>155886950No>>155886968Yoj at
>>155886983>Yoj atta joy?
>>155887010You are weak
>>155885844>it's easy to see him in that way. it doesn't make him a loser, it just makes him boring comparatively. You are correct, but the show and writers constantly treat him as if he is an actual loser simply because he isn't some OP science god. They keep telling us he's a loser, but anyone who can think for themselves realizes he's just a normal guy
>>155887022and you are worthless

jerry got better later on
>>155886978Kinda yeah. Appreciation is nice, but to make it your highlight is suggesting that you don't have higher goals than "doing basic good things".
grass tastes bad
>>155885810You wrote all of this text and missed the obvious fact that Rick is incredibly envious of Jerry because he's happy with his simple life and Rick isn't.
>>155884480Seems fitting that the best Rick and Morty episode would have the best portrayal of Jerbear.
>>155889524Cusack my GOATTTT
>>155887055To be clear, this didn't happen till season 3 and the new writers pretty much rewrote and retconned the original two seasons characterizations (for all the characters not just Jerry) out of existence. In 1&2 the joke with Jerry is that he's an average schmuck trapped in a world of nonsense. You laughed because it's funny to see an average normie panic and run away from a wacky sci-fi monster. Season 3 rewrote him to be some kind of ultimate loser who literally can't function and who we're supposed to despise for some reason and somehow everything bad that happens to him is both deserved and justified, basically an abuse goblin. Feels like someone was taking out some of their issues on him.
>>155884480He isn't that much of a loser anymore. He got a job again, most of the family now actually tolerates if not downright like him. He discovered tons of stuff about himself and what he can and can't do while becoming more of his own man. Jerry is almost the most relatable member of the Smith family now.
