I am not so sure if American Flagg isnt cape comics. His costume and the stories feel much more like Punisher. Who gets put into the cape comics bag.

>Is he based on Bruce Campbell?
Flagg was based on a young James Garner and the characters he played on TV, Maverick and Jim Rockford in that they would rather be pragmatic than heroic.

Bruce would have been a great live action Flagg though.
>>
>>155906191
He's in that weird 80's Action movie protag gray area. There's a real juxtaposition of being Down to Earth and Larger than Life. And that area is where Superheroes thrive.

My ultimate fantasy is an animated 1 to 1 adaptation of the original 13 issues of American Flagg. Unfortunately I know it would never happen since the villain group is literally stated to be radical Democrats, and there's no way modern Hollywood would let that fly in today's world. I'm not a political person, I just wouldn't want it changed.
>>
These just feel like stealth cape comics.

The only comic not written by Will Eisner I'd consider a Great American Novel.

Eric Powell's the Goon.
Will Eisner's the Spirit still looks good.
Tarzan and sgt. Rock.

Things can be cool and comedic at the same time, look at Ghostbusters.

It's weird! Cause cape comics are just mixes of other pulp genres. Most super hero comics are just structurally detective stories but they'll sometimes dip into horror, drama, swat teams. So it's hard for non-cape stories to completely decouple themselves from feeling like cape comics if they have any sort of action at all.
>>
>>155911041
All comics are cape comics.

>Most super hero comics are just structurally detective stories but they'll sometimes dip into horror, drama, swat teams.
I love cape so much
>>
>>155920682
I love when the genre is looser or combined with a ton of other genres.
>>
>>155915893
It still boggles my mind that Lucky Luke is a completely unknown character in the States.
>>
>>155911041
That's because they're all action comics. The problem with most anti-cape people on /co/ is that they find all comedy embarrassingly juvenile, all drama dryly boring, and all oddball stuff too lowbrow to bother with. Hell, fantasy and science fiction only get a pass when they're action-based, too. Otherwise, they get snubbed like they do in literature: genre fiction that no-one should take seriously.
>>
>>155921708
Feels like a lot of European stuff, big or small, never makes it out of its home country. Did the books ever get translated with any regularity?

>>
>>155918323
More a remake intended to be an easy entry point. It's definitely less cartoony take while keeping in the spirit of the original series.
>>
>>155921920
It didn't, which is weird. It was cowboy comic made during THE HEIGHT of America's love for Westerns. You'd think some magazine would have thought to have brought it over and serialized it. The only think I assume was stopping them was it being foreign.
>>
>>155923507
Most action mangos are cape comics too
>>
>>155924152
>The only think I assume was stopping them was it being foreign.
This was probably it. Even if it would have been very appropriate to get translated it being foreign would stop it. Even now we have comics and shows never making it over to the states. For every Miraculous or Depends or whatever that gets translated there's dozens and dozens of comics and shows that don't. Even sometimes form the same studios.

Y the last man is something I'm reading. It's OK. I'm disappointed at how modern it feels despite releasing in 2002. Makes it feel like we haven't evolved at all in anything that isn't technology

You're right. It's a dead, puerile media that's been dead for years and this thread proves it. Nearly 20 fucking hours and not a goddamn one of you posted anything remotely cool or worth reading.

Nah, there's something about them that feels cape. Cape is a pseudo-genre, not a real one, so there's a certain feel and structure to the stories that's kinda distinct to them. You cna make an action series without it feeling like cape but in comics it's rare, I guess it doesn't help that these writers and artists hone their skills on cape so when it comes time to do their own thing they default to what they know.

Nta but yeah. "American history/folklore + European touch" is more likely to rub some feathers than if the book was adapting mythology or a fairy tale. Undertaker is in the same boat as LL for that.

An excellent historical spanish comic.

If anyone can translate and provide the full text to me, I can typeset it.

>>155932268
It's weird since I don't really think anyone would care, but because it's European it just doesn't get given a chance at all. I don't know if this is an issue steming from the European side, where they feel the people in the states wouldn't care about their work so they don't try to spread it there or if this is an issue states side where the publishers there don't care and don't bother bringing over anything from overseas. Especially with this being an online era where translations and sharing are so easy.
>>
>>155904880
That's not how you spell 'Flag'! Are they stupid??
>>
>>155932499
The “issue” stems from both sides. Publishing abroad requires significant resources and connections, so publishers generally stick to their domestic market. It is up to a foreign publisher to pay for a license and translate/distribute it in their own country, at their own financial risk. I suppose there is simply no—or very little—perceived interest in or profit to be made from Euro comics in the States, especially compared to manga. Honestly, I can’t think of any publisher outside of DC/Disney/Marvel that self-publishes abroad.
>I don't really think anyone would care
Idk, you'd have to ask that to more than one American who've read those. Euro-western may feel like they're made for the US market, but maybe they also "hit too close to home".

American Flagg, Grimjack and Jon Sable were my indie trinity in the 80's.
