I feel like Preacher had the genuine potential to be one of Ennis’s best series and a modern classic, but he undermines it at every turn with his obsession with shit, piss, rape and vomit. And then there’s his infuriating habit of constantly undercutting his villains, humiliating them to the point where they stop being remotely threatening and become little more than glorified jokes
>>155911323I think it's his best. One of my favorite comics.
>>155911433That’s my issue with it, it genuinely has some great parts and it comes so fucking close to being great overall, only to completely fuck it up. One scene I remember is when Jesse’s dad confronts the CO who got his buddy killed. So he and his fiend end up shoving the guy into a shit barrel, throwing the barrel at the Viet Cong, who then shoot him and blow him the fuck up. Up until that point, the story had been genuinely engaging and well-written, but then it ends with a fucking barrel of shit.
>>155911532I liked the ending.
>>155911323I understand what are you saying. I also found the negative points you mention highly disruptive.
>>155911323For me, at least, the lows of the story were never bad enough to completely sour my experience. Ennis usually has enough restraint to rein in his worst impulses in the most important moments like in picrel. Beneath all the crass humor and gross-out moments, Preacher has some really strong writing and moments like the Alamo and the Saint's confrontation with God have stuck with me a lot more than things like Starr getting his cock bitten off.Ennis's work has plenty of issues, but there's a level of sincerity to it that's pretty hard to find in other mainstream comic writers.
Say whatever you want about Ennis, but "Preacher" got me on the road to recovery. I tried moderation, tried going cold turkey because "it was right", tried rehab.Nothing worked like the image of Cassidy sucking dick for heroin. The last time I picked up a pipe, that image flashed before my eyes.Every time I think about scoring, that image hits me.Been clean for five months so far.It may not be much, but its the longest I've ever gone in almost five years.
>>155911323it's just badly written.
>>155912209It's a pretty shit moment.
>>155911323To be fair, that's kinda the point. Garth Ennis has a Hannah Arendt-esque view of evil, from what I've read of his stuff (The Boys, Hitman, Hellblazer, The Shadow, Preacher).Evil isn't something to be admired, or aesthetically appealing, it's stupid. It's selfish, libertine, idiotic and inherently illogical. It's a racist manlet who fucks meat. It's an apocalypse-worshipping former Nazi who gets his dick bitten off by a dog. It's an obese religious fundamentalist whose entire world view is built on two millennia of incest.Yes, evil can be calculated, can plan, can amass power through cunning behavior, but the reasoning behind it is petulant. Evil is banal, and irrational.
>>155912446Jody was cool.
Something i noticed about Ennies how good he is on writing romantic relationships. Felt so realistic unlike anything else he does
>>155912296Good for you anon, may penis never touch your lips and heroin never run in your veins again.
>>155913205Jody was a fag.
>>155913334>Something i noticed about Ennies how good he is on writing romantic relationships. As someone who owns his and Jamie Delano's entire Hellblazer runs in floppy, that couldn't be further from the truth. Jamie Delano dedicated half an issue to John Constantine being an absolute mess after he sacrificed a love interest to stop the coming of a false messiah because he knew nobody likes a mope; Garth Ennis thought it would be a good idea if a romance took up two entire years of his Hellblazer run, and much like his sense of humor, it was pretty fucking terrible.
>>155911323That's what makes it good
>>155913528He got better at it.
>>155914447I've read Preacher; he really didn't.
>>155914564It's good in Preacher.
>>155912336This.
>>155912446>evilIt's being a better indicator of gun homicide than legal firearm ownership. And calling anyone who points it out, or how little 'street level crime' reflects reality, "racist."
>>155914707Nah. It's great.
